I've got an earlier version of that (there have been a few, mine's The Tolkien Encyclopedia) but I think you'll really enjoy it. Ted Nasmith's stuff is lovely too - my Silmarillion is one illustrated by him.

Is Adar Maglor? I realize people think he's Sauron (and I mean that makes sense too since he mentioned Tol Sirion and both Sauron and Maglor can be linked to that location; it WAS Saruon's first real "base" after all), but the gauntlet over his hand and his burn scars are such a telling thing....Maglor's hand was burned by the Silmaril he possessed that he eventually threw into the sea when Maedthros killed himself, right....and the last we see of him was wandering ME super sad...

I think Maglor is a SOLID guess....the last remaining son of Fëanor...

But yes, it could also be Sauron.

At this point in Middle-Earth's history, Sauron has the power to change appearance, so looks aren't necessarily a clue nor an obstacle. But I'm going with the theory that baby Gandalf is actually baby Sauron, and elfy Sauron is indeed actually Magmar son of Femur or whoever. He's some corrupted elf at least.

Maglor would indeed be a really interesting guess.... if they had access to him. I can't claim to have checked the Appendices specifically but Tolkien Gateway and One Wiki to Rule Them All list all their references for Maglor and there's nothing outside of Silmarillion or The History of Middle Earth, so I'm pretty sure it can't be him without them getting into very dodgy territory a la copyrighted material. Also, as evil as the deeds driven by the Oath are, I think I might have a hard time swallowing an elf from the family of Morgoth's greatest enemy ending up in service to Sauron.

In terms of other possibilities:

1. Technically, the father of the orcs is Morgoth. I'm not suggesting this is Morgoth, but that doesn't stop the character having convinced the orcs he is, or is a herald of Morgoth or similar, which would explain their devotion and servitude. I seem to vaguely recall there was a casting for a "cultist" or similar, so that's possibly Adar?

Also, the orcs are corrupted elves. I wonder if Adar might turn out to be an early part-way-there sort of orc.

2. Sauron never touches the Silmarils, that I can recall. Aside from Morgoth, the only characters I can think of that touch the Silmarils and are burned by them are Maglor, and his elder brother Maedhros (and Carcharoth, who eats one). We know explicitly from Silmarillion that Maedhros committed suicide, throwing himself and the Silmaril into a fiery chasm. Happy to hear if I've missed any though!

3. Maeglin probably deserves a mention, if we're looking for an actual elf who's a wrong'un. He "vanishes into the fires below" at the Fall of Gondolin, and he had been convinced by Morgoth to betray the location of the Hidden Vale in return for the promise of overlordship of the elves and possession of his cousin Idril (because Maeglin's an asshole). So, if he survived, he'd be badly burned you would think. However, I suspect that poses the same problem as Maglor in that they don't have access to him.

Of course, Adar could have just picked a pan up from the stove (Mr Not a Blacksmith's current theory!)

Sauron's form of Annatar ("Lord of GIfts") in which he appears to the elves is described as angelic, and as a herald of the Valar. I think we can assume he'd be reasonably elf-like, the Valar are described as putting on "mortal raiment" when they interact with the elves in Valinor.

Adar can't be Maeglin or Maglor, they're Silmarillion (or other stuff not in contract) only. Morgoth made the orcs from elves he'd captured, tortured and warped (genetically engineered, perhaps?) My bet would be that he's one of those. Maybe even the first; which would explain why the orcs call him "Father"

It took me from 11:30 AM to 4:40 PM today to get through the last two episodes. Kept getting distracted by the internet (... which really could have waited).

New meditation: notice when I reflexively want to do something else (aside from refilling my coffee or water... or toilet) and bring my focus back to the screen.

I hate the cheesy PG Hollywood action-comedy treatment (in this regard this is more extreme iirc than the second two Hobbit movies---almost goes as far in this direction as the first). The cliched visual and musical gags---that usually fall flat.

(There's a bit of that style iirc in shows like Sweet Tooth or Stranger Things, but it's done much better. I usually like maximalism, but this is more like an overwrought unintentional parody... unlike those other shows, the cheesy beats are lacking emotional resonance---perhaps because they fail to get us to care much about the characters first, or perhaps because the pacing and direction is just bad.)

IDK, maybe very young children like it?...

OTOH some of the landscapes and cityscapes are beautiful.

There’s been a number of bits that had me in loud laughing fits and yeah that slo mo horse riding scene was one of them. I woke my dog up in the next room during Dwarf gals lip sync prayer ceremony. Oh boy it really cleared up my nostrils. Elf beau and that awful slo mo arrow catch and release was another. Ed oh and an honorable mention for the Make Numenor Great Again bit.

This show is really quite hilarious when it’s not supposed to be imo. The sheer number of turn around hero poses is quite absurd. Pretty backgrounds is about all this shit show has in its favor. I’m straight up baffled that it will be guaranteed to be on for 5 seasons before it even aired. It is simply a boring watch with a popular named franchise.
