Finally watched Rogue One for the second time.
And then a third. I really like this film, was great to see it again after what seems like ages. Didn't disappoint. Sometimes Vaders lines seemed a bit like J.E Jones doing an impression of himself being Vader, if that makes sense, but Tarkin gets better with each viewing, the ending was well thought out (I liked the way the reshoot was done because they assumed Disney wouldn't let them kill everyone - so they reshot the ending where they lived back to the original concept where they all die) and I only noticed this time that the Death Star beam takes out the tower with Krennic on before hitting the surface.
It's so watchable. I might stick it on again later.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Chris Miller & Phil Lord have left the project many weeks into shooting (only three weeks left as far as I'm aware)...with both sides citing "creative differences"...
This news was more recently updated with more specifics that Miller and Lord were "fired" (no venom in the word mind you, just they were let go).
Anyways, sucks to be pulled off a project like this...especially so deep into shooting (it's really RARE for this to happen), but I trust it's for the best as Kasdan knows this character well...and if they conflicted with that view...this is probably for the best.
I never thought these guys were the right choice anyways.
The two directors who are being tapped to maybe step in to replace them are Ron Howard, or Joe Johnston...or Kasdan himself.

Yeah, as i scan the coverage i waver between studio interference and 'that was probably a good idea'.
I fear the studio trying too hard to sell action figures and lunchboxes and appeal to a wider (stupider) audience, but i also fear Solo being written for laughs when that just isn't the character. His funniest moments in the original trilo were generally sarcastic wit or frantic scrambling in the midst of action, not slapstick.

Indeed, and Miller & Lord can't do "wry & Sarcastic"...their whole wheelhouse (Jump Street, Lego movie, Cloudy with a chance) is completely slapstick.
I feel like that is where the schism arose.

Is there really a consistent Solo character anymore? IMO, he *was* played for laughs in TFA. Or like how the "Kessel Run in 12 parsecs" line was originally supposed to mean he was a bit of an idiot spouting off nonsense, but nowadays that line means he is such a skilled pilot because of some convoluted EU explanation of how it supposedly makes sense.

The consistent Solo character is the one portrayed by Harrison Ford. The EU is no longer cannon so any character deviation between that and the films is tossed out of the window.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

^^This.
And for the record, Ford played him pitch perfectly and not for laughs in TFA. It was all wry wit, and sarcasm. Exactly as he's always been.

I still don't really care about this movie. It could fall apart for all I care. Young Han can be shelved for later(5-7years). There so many other things that need focused on while James Earl Jones is still here. I want Vader and Palps establishing order I meant fear, and hunting Order 66 survivors in glorious saber show downs.
A young han movie would take place during that time period. Presumably it would take place between the end of the return of the sith and rouge one. Depending on how they wanted to set it up we could see bits of the empire perhaps vador. Not too much though because Han had a very limited awareness of the force in episode 4.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

Ron Howard has officially signed on to take the helm on the last three weeks or so of Principle Photography, and the reshoots/pickups scheduled for the summer.

I would imagine he will. And yeah, he's a solid, solid choice. He's worked with both Kennedy and Kasdan before.
At a guess, they can use a lot of the stuff shot already and just do pickups for dialogue sequences to firm up the scenes into a shape better suiting what LFL was looking for, and not whatever Miller and Lord had planned.
My bottom line is that Getting Tony Gilroy to come in and shore up the ending of ROGUE ONE, and the reshoots (including the Vader scene)...was the RIGHT decision on the part of Kat Kennedy. I hope this is the same deal.
I'l be interested though if Howard gets the full Director's credit, if he will share a Co-credit with Miller & Lord, or if (like Tony Gilroy) he gets his pay check without the name attached in a significant way. I'll wager this will be a Ron Howard joint in the end, and Miller & Lord will be wiped from the register.

This movie was going to be terrible no matter who directed it anyway, but perhaps a complete failure will convince Disney to cut down on the prequels and try to make something interesting.

It sounds like it shook out like this:
-Kennedy hired Miller and Lord to bring a certain youthful exuberance and comedy TO the film (based on Kasdan's script, written by him and his son), probably on the back of their comedy work.
-They came on board and began to shoot things the way they PROBABLY have done in their past, which sounds like it was 90% improv which they claim is "letting their actors find their characters and embody them more completely". The problem with that was that they were not following the script, and thus the film began to diverge from what it was meant to be (and as a prequel to an existing and BELOVED character...it NEEDED to line up with canon and follow a pretty strict script).
-I heard that Kasdan was trying to shadow them and keep them on task, but that they would shoot their own "improved" stuff as well as his actual dialogue, and the would cut the dailies together with THEIR stuff, not the script lines...which Kennedy was not happy with.
They also apparently were SUPER lax with their camera placement options. A seasoned filmmaker tries everything from a bunch of different angles and takes, so the editing room has a chance at making it a compelling film and not just the same types of shots over and over (See M. Night for a guy who refuses to do this, and his films suffer from a repetitively of shots that is...OTT). So Kennedy would ask to see the options and Lord & Miller would show her three setups when she was expecting closer to fifteen.
-The reason it took so long into production to realize what was going on, was when Miller & Lord assembled a bit of a rough cut of the film, Kennedy and everyone else saw how far they'd veered from the story by doing their improvised takes. They claim they didn't have "creative freedom"...but it sounds more like their fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants style was not conducive to a multi-million dollar franchise entry. Don't want to be micromanaged for going off task? Don't take a job directing a film in a massive global-winning franchise.
-It also sounds like the way they allowed Ehrenreich to improv during the shoot, veered him well away from who Han Solo is...and it sound like he was one of the people who spoke up about that to Kennedy. I would guess that it is THIS that prompted the "acting coach" to come in...not that Ehrenreich NEEDED it, but rather that he had to be untrained from how he was playing the character for Miller & Lord and retrained to play him like he should be (a young Harrison Ford).
-I heard also that a lot of the crew felt the production was off too. To the point that when Ron Howard walked on set, they applauded him. Say what you will of Howards more recent films, over his older films...this was a no nonsense director who was coming aboard to get the job done. And I think that would be great to a bunch of people who felt like they couldn't get their jobs done under Silly 1 and Silly 2 (Miller & Lord).
-The firing of the original editor, and hiring of Pietro Scalia who edited stuff like THE MARTIAN instead (this occurred in May) also probably came as a result to the eventual decision to axe Miller & Lord, once their editor choice (Chris Dickens...who has like only 5 films under his belt?) would have been the guy who assembled the rough cut that no one liked...as such, he was not worth his salt as an editor. As it is an editor that USUALLY can tell when something isn't working and gets something done about it. Example: It was an editor on the BTTF set who pulled Robert Zebecks into the Editing lab and showed him that Eric Stolz was NOT working as Marty McFly weeks into shooting, and that was what caused Zemeckis (who agreed with him) to fire Stolz, and hire Michael J. Fox. You NEED your editor to catch that stuff. It sounds like Dickens didn't, and just let things stand all the way to a rough cut. I mean shit, no wonder they'd made it so far into production without anyone raising their hand to say "this isn't working".
Anyways, that's how I see it. Miller & Lord were hired because Kennedy thought they had the chops to insert some of their comedy sensibilities into the film BUT also expected them to be able to shoot the film as its written, and produce a solid heist film with some laughs. It sounds like THEY in turn assumed they could make 23 JUMP STREET: THE HAN SOLO YEARS.
Roll on Ron Howard. I never wanted this to be good, and while Miller & Lord were on it, I wasn't sure...but now I have a little more faith.

So what you're basically saying is that, if they insisted on running with the stupid idea of a Han Solo film, and they wanted someone who could do a bit of irreverent humour but still stick to the script and canon, they should have hired Matthew Vaughan?
I do find a bit of irony in Kasdan complaining that people were going off his script, though.

That's about the size of it PG. LOL
Also, most recent news is that they're quite unhappy with Ehrenreich's performance, and if the "acting coach" they've brought in doesn't work, there is whispers hat he will be replaced with Anthony Ingruber...who I always thought should be cast in the role anyways, so that would only be a good thing.
In fact, Ingruber as young Han Solo (he's already played a young version of Ford in another film), would get me excited about a film that I have always seen as needless. He's THAT good at pulling off young Ford.
