Do the stakes need to be high for you as the audience member though? The stakes are high for the characters within their universe. That is enough for the story at hand, and for the first half of a two part story. This is going to (for example) utterly DESTROY Tony going forward, and Rocket, and a few others for sure.

Was it meant to emotionally manipulate US as the audience, I very much doubt it. I think the deaths in IW occur and are meaningful to those left afterwards. The sacrifices are internal.

I don't think anyone was watching thinking, well those people are all dead....nor do I feel that the Russo's intent.


Okay, sure. I do agree that like the stakes of a story matter to the characters within. However I can't imagine everybody who made the film thought...

Sure, the second part is important. But certainly the Russo's and Fiege wanted me to feel something at the finale.

Others did, I didn't. Primarily because of the transparent impermanence of the whole thing.

I don't know. Isn't the whole point of the MCU by now that we are more interested in the characters, their relationships, what they feel and what they go through than in who dies at the end? For me, the most interesting part of the finale was

Saw it. Loved it.

For me this movie was about Thanos and Thor. I actually wish Thanos got even more screentime. I wish someone would talk to him about his notion of "imbalance" This reminds me a lot of Imperiex and his notion of a flawed universe in DC.

I have really loved Thor's evolution over the last two movies. His good-natured muscled goof days are truly over and he actually feels like a force to be reckoned with.

All the Guardians except Rocket dying was a serious gut punch. I can't even think of what he is going to be feeling like.

Really looking forward to Capain Marvel and the next Avengers.

I really enjoyed it, more than I thought I would. It's interesting how this film basically confirms the MCU as a large-scale TV series, in that the film gave absolutely no concessions to anyone who hadn't seen the previous 'episodes'. I'd imagine if I had gone into this as a standalone film, I might have thought that Michael Bay had written the screenplay.

I was impressed by the extent to which they managed to balance the enormous cast and multiple plots without dropping all the balls. It wasn't perfect (Cap plot thread), but nonetheless it could have been way way worse.

The film kept me hooked throughout, and even took a couple of (for me) unexpected twists. The funny bits were funny, and even some of the serious bits were poignant (though I thought others missed the mark a little).

And I probably most appreciated how much time they took to flesh out Thanos, and how much screentime they gave the villain (not something the MCU has been particularly good at before). None of the erstwhile protagonists actually go through any sort of character development, but Thanos does. I came away with the impression that this was less an Avengers film and more a Thanos film.

I was actually surprised how much exposition they managed to subtly cram in. You get Star-Lord and Thor summarizing their latest movies to each other, Drax talking about the "dance-off to save the universe" from GotG1, etc.

Yeah, a lot of the original Avengers cast didn't get a whole to do, but on the other hand, they're some of the only ones left, so I'm guessing they'll have much more screentime in the part 2.

Yep, the directors had been saying as much. Brolin was pretty fantastic.

Just got home, liked it a lot. It wouldn't replace any of my Top 5 MCU movies, but the best of these movies set a high standard so that's no insult.

Anyway, those are all teeny tiny nitpicks, cuz the movie was pretty solid. Just stick the landing and it'll be a real triumph.

Absolutely loved every little bit of it. It's now my favourite MCU movie without question. It even almost made me go see it a second time, and if movie tickets weren't so insanely expensive, I would have. Everyone was on top of their game, and Josh Brolin absolutely KILLS as Thanos, imo. Waiting for part II is going to be painful.
