And for what it's worth, THE ORVILLE is still nailing its STAR TREK TNG homage this past week on ep 4. I think I'm going to stick to that show, as that is at least attempting to be STAR TREK. Also, THE ORVILLE this past week had a Liam Neeson cameo...and that's never a bad thing!

I just saw the first episode and enjoyed it. Shame it got slammed by the critics. But it's got Adrianne Palicki in it, so I don't care.

The 2nd and 3rd episodes are better than the first. And this week is a Charlize Theron guest spot!

I'm eager to see them, but I'll probably wait now until the show hits Fox UK and I can watch it properly.

So seriously where the hell does this fit in with the movies or tv series. Can I just treat it as it's own thing?

Cause they are now inventing new technologies that never existed anywhere else.

The theory I've seen bandied about is that Discovery only begins as a prequel and they will get thrown forward in time by the end of the season to post-dominion war ,and the "past" will assume the secret Section 31 tech failed and abandon it.

It's not a neat solution, but it is what it is.

Also, I think if I could have treated this as a separate continuity, I'd have enjoyed it.

Continuity is overrated. Ii'll take an entertaining sf show over continuity-consistent crap every time.

I like continuity.

EDIT: They should make a show called Star Trek: Continuity and it should be about Q's daughter running amok and pissing him off.

If only this was entertaining you'd be all set
Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours

...Q was one of the best things to come out of TNG.

Well, 2 eps in i am entertained, flaws and bad Klingon makeup notwithstanding. That's fundamentally all i care about.

Just watched the first 3 episodes, thought episode 3 was considerably better than the first 2, still not amazing or anything, but good enough to watch ep 4 for sure. It helps that I enjoy Jason Isaacs in most things, even if he is somewhat typecast - actually the mystery around his Captain is probably the best thing to come out of the first 3 episodes. Burnham is a bad protagonist, I don't like her she is annoying and honestly not very well acted. I don't mind if the main focus of the series is to be the Federation/Klingon war, but I do hope that is the background in at least some episodes, if it completely loses the the exploration aspect entirely (in a ship named Discovery no less!) then I will feel a little disappointed.

That camera work in the first 2 episodes especially was just downright dodgy!

I like the fact that Saru is played by the same guy who plays the Gentleman in the Buffy episode Hush.

EDIT: I won't be able to help comparing every sci-fi show I watch to The Expanse now, and I can't see this holding up unless it improves considerably, which of course isn't impossible but yeah.

Yeah, fair to say THE EXPANSE raised the bar for space opera tv.

That season 2 episode, Home, is up there with some of the best sci-fi I've ever seen tbh. I still need to read the books, I can only imagine that they are even better, they usually are.

I agree.

It amazes me though that with no less than 4 TV series, and several movies they didnt pick up on the point that Vulcans dont make great leads. There is a reason that every Vulcan character on the show (with the exception of Tuvok) and Vulcan stand in Data had their human half, or search for being human be such a huge part of their character. Emotionless Logic Robots are boring. Actually even Tuvok had several episodes where we examined the emotions he buried and Tuvol was always one of the more secondary characters on Voyager. Tpol in enterprise had a romantic subplot for gods sake. Also Enterprise was painful.

So they came up with a human character trying to be more Vulcan?

They are, but the show stands very nicely by itself.

Just watched orville.

Can confirm it is a better Star trek show than the Star trek show.

I disagree. The books start off really well, then flounder from around Book 2 until recovering in the excellent Book 5 (Book 4 is readable but entirely superfluous to the story at hand). The TV show has made some excellent early structural changes that make it far more interesting and compelling from the off, and I would rank the show as winning out on the book vs show comparison at this stage. It helps the novel writers are heavily engaged with the TV show and are applying some lessons they learned from the books to the TV show to make it better.

There is No way to accept this belongs in the continuity. None. I'm okay with this. I wish they would just admit it though.
