Ah, so they're just doing the minimum to get by and adding flourishes if they have to or feel like it. I guess I can relate to that (with my job). This really is a holiday/chump change to them.

Nice to see the referee wasn't at all intimidated by the Brasilian crowd in the penalty shootout (women's soccer AUS vs BRA). The Brasilian keeper was 3-4 metres off her line EVERY GODDAMN TIME. Yet no warnings or penalties. From a few things I have read it seems the local teams are really getting the favour of the refs in every sport. Intimidation? Or just trying to make the home nation look good/get ratings/bums on seats/etc?

What a holiday though. Ball is life in a way that blends fun and work, plus they get to see Rio in a way that coddled millionaires still rarely get to see (full welcome wagon, bad parts shoved out of sight, most things free).

At the same time, they're not partying THAT much on the boat they've got for security purposes. I think a few players have publicly and privately complained about the lack of action on the boat.

GB third. Let's face it, we'll never beat the US or China so third is a pretty solid place for us to be!

We're doing so well, the BBC haven't even mentioned Tom Daley for a while!

I know it was only Group A< but men's weightlifting 94 kg.... the Uki boy killed it, making all those weights look easy.

EDIT: naturally, Pool A totally destroyed his score... and our lifter in Pool A did not have a good competition.

Felt bad for the Thai guy. He pulled several personal bests. The Iranian guy was crazy, though

So bummed water stuff is now over.

Watched some track just now and got bored as fuck so changed to other station and its meatheads lifting weights boring as well but this dude from Thailand just threw that 300lbs bar over his head like it was a feather and impressed me.

Thai guy + the Uki kid from Group B were the only ones who looked actually built. Esp. the Thai kid for being so tall. The rest either looked overweight, or just too bulky.

Watched 0 coverage today b/c I was out all day. Against all hope I'm hoping UA picks up at least one gold somewhere. Maybe wrestling (?). We had a very poor show in boxing this year, which is unusual. Fencing and shooting are done, and those were really our best shots. I'm hoping for a few gymnastics medals, but I don't think there'll be any gold there.

Yep he def impressed me from what little of it I saw.

Watching a bit of women indoor VB it's RUS vs BRA so they are booing every fucking time RUS serves. I hope they go ahead and beat them for that shit. That's just going a bit to far for me but it's home team vs the enemy of the games so not surprising it's happening tbh.

Gabby and Biles will be back in gym in a bit. Biles is outstanding but I really hope Gabby can get a gold this 2nd Olympics.

Thai kid did a personal best in both snatch + Clean & jerk lifts, by about 10 kilos in each. I was a little hearbroken he missed out on medals

That didn't even look fair. She is on a completely different level than any of the other competition.

Holy shit at the 400m final. Ridiculous achievement by Van Niekerk.

Britain are currently above China in the medal table which is a sight to see.

There's definitely going to be a lot of postmortems about our performance in the pool. So many world record holders choking in the finals. There's something wrong with our system. Or our collective psyche.

We ARE all a bit nuts though. :o

How good is this guy?

"Upset" as in unexpectedly defeated them, or "upset" as in "made them cry like little bitches"? Because with Italian teams, either is equally likely.

Man, I'd love to have every athlete give 5 sealed blood samples and have the 5 samples retested like time capsules in 10, 20, 30 etc years time. I'll bet the results would be interesting to say the least.

EDIT: funniest Olympic headline so far:

Upset as in Italy was the top team, gone 4-0 in the pool thus far...and were beaten in ALMOST 3 straight sets by the 12th team, Canada.

But yeah, the arrogant Italian ringer Zaystev, is the guy who fucked up the last shot in the last set in a completely boneheaded way....so that was pretty poetic.

I gotta say, the Italians were FAR better sportsmanship-wise losers in this match than the Brazillians who were petulant, dickheaded assholes (and they WON theirs).

Brazilians are super chill, until their masculinity is threatened. Then they go haywire in a really flouncy way. This is a general thing and individuals won't always act like this, but the culture across the big cities of Brazil is like this for the men.

I been doing Brazilian jiu jitsu long enough that I'm not super bothered by it anymore, but i do know what you're talking about.

Huh, I didn't know that. I just found it really strange when I watched. The Canadians were being super respectful and sportsmanlike, and the Brazilians just descended into this overt form of dickery that I would not have been able to tolerate or ignore if I'd been confronted with it.

FINALLY, a UA gold! (gymnastics- the same kid who got silver in the individual all-around)

SO many 4th place finishes in these games. Shockingly, the 3m springboard diver made it to the finals (he was 3rd last in prelims, but apparently he did much better in semis).

Couple more golds, and we can be back to the top 15-10 in the medal table. That's all I ever want- a top 10 finish.
