Worked my way through, picked off everyone, sprung the ambushes - and got killed when I made a stupid move, by a twin bladed guy right near the shortcut door. Then I lost a whole levels' worth of souls on the way back.

Now I don't usually have a problem with the camera, but I was running up a roof to get evade someone, pressed the lock-on - and the camera did a full 180, and I ran over the edge. I swore.

Third time lucky, finally opened up all shortcuts and had a go at the.. bosses. Did pretty well for a first attempt; will have another go later.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I always turn the camera auto-correct off completely, so I don't get murdered by sudden changes when I'm navigating ledges and stuff while it adjusts for walls. But really the only way to never get done in by those dodgy cameras at all is to also never use lock-on, because it will fuck you over from time to time. Really my only big complaint about the Souls series as a whole is the camera antics.

Did you get the Crystal Sage on your first go? I ask because I was finding the entire fight ludicrously easy, then when I was about 3 hits from killing it, it's like the game said right, 'who the fuck does this guy think he is' got hit by about 6 homing spears and just about eveything else, drained me of my estus and then when I finally killed it I was one hit away from death myself. Teach me for scoffing at a Dark Souls boss lol

I got him in about three - once I saw he was purple, and appearing on opposite sides, I was guessing where he'd come up and running there. He did get me with something though - I was up close and two handing hoping to get him quick when I just died instantly.

I'm out of the Cathedral of the Deep now - good area design there. Killed a mimic by luring it down an elevator shaft. I also used the white stone and went back several times to kill the bosses as I was racking up the souls. Amazing how the players summoning me hadn't figured out the mechanic of which boss was the only one taking damage before calling for help.

Back in the swamp now. Just found a sleeping wolf in a tower, way up on the broken road to the castle. Have you joined any Covenants yet?

I'll check my camera settings.

Was probably the big purple homing crystal ball that got you, I never got hit directly by that in the fight. I actually summoned Eygon the NPC for the fight, he didn't really help a jot, don't think he got more than 1-2 hits in the entire fight, basically just added HP to the boss really lol

I'm still only at the Cleansing Chapel myself, I got that far then went back and went to Farron Keep for some reason. It's working out though, slogged through the swamp killing Basilisks before I was invaded by Yellow Finger Heysel for the second time and she managed to kill me because I got greedy and didn't use an estus. Slogged through it again, this time in the opposite direction, extinguished 2 fires, and found the sleeping wolf before I stopped playing last night. Oh and I also killed these 3 tree shaman dudes, got the Black Bow and Hat of Pharis for my troubles (both of which I am now using ;) ). Plus Undead Bone Shard too, 10 Estus at +2 and I haven't even gotten to the Cathedral boss yet.

Naw I haven't actually bothered joining any covenants as of yet, I'm having to play offline because no PSN, so I haven't seen much point yet, I'm sure I'll look up just what you get from each covenant at some point, I'm betting to pop all the 'Get all...' achievements you'll have to do some slog work with them at some point. I'm more annoyed that I can't rack up souls by helping people with boss fights tbh :/

Oh btw if you've spoken to that women Sirris, who shows up at Firelink after you first meet Anri and Horace, she tells you some shtick about how 'I see no benefits of fraternisation' or something. If you try to give the Dreamchaser ashes (the ones you pick up just before the Wolf in the keep) to the shop woman at Firelink, she refuses to take them. Next time you come back to Firelink after that (or quit/reload I imagine works too), Sirris will have more to say, telling you that you can use her summon sign, plus you get a gesture from her. No idea where I'll be able to summon her, guess I'll find out.

One last thing, Grass Crest Shield+Chloranthy Ring= awesomeness!!!! :p

I have those equipped! Plus the ring that does extra damage when at full health. Oh and the one that gives back hp for each kill - compliments the other one nicely.

Got 7 +3 estus at the moment, and I rarely play using the ember, so it's a nice boost when I do use one.

I haven't seen the Onion knight or Patches round the Cathedral, and they're both supposed to be there so I must have missed a stage or two with them.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Oh yeah, Pontiff's left Eye, I have that one as well, along with the Estus Ring and the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring. The Left Eye is is brilliant when you have a large number of enemies, worth it's weight in.... Estus :p I find I'm never at full health long enough for Lloyd's Rings to provide much benefit, I have the shield ring which boosts damage absorption at full HP, I'm assuming the damage one is the Sword ring or something.

I'll let you know if I see either when I get through the Cathedral. Did you do everything with Siegward in the Undead Settlement? Help him fight the Fire Demon and such? I haven't seen anything more of him since then, so I'm not sure what step you could've missed tbh. Oh and if you still have it, give the Siegbrau item (Onion Bro gives it for helping him defeat the Demon) to the crow, you get Solaire's armor for it ;)

I took all 5 free levels from Yoel, he has now died and been replaced by Yuria, who looks badass in the black set. Btw, if you ever heal the Darksign it will put an end to Yuria's questline and the Usurpation ending apparently. But you can cure your hollowing by using purging stones, which she sells, so you don't have to be all hollow in looks, just have to keep the darksign if that's the ending you are going for.

Yeah I've blown all possibility of that ending, I'll save it for the next playthrough ;)

I last saw Siegward after we beat the demon. I learned the toast gesture; but I haven't seen him since. He's not down the well at the Cathedral where he supposedly shows up next, I might have to check back later. Also, for some reason I don't appear to have the fire demons soul, even though I killed it. I did go and get the sun armour though, just because!

Just found another demon to deal with. Looks a bit like the Stray but he's out in the open so shouldn't be too bad.

I only ever got a Fire Gem for killing the Demon, don't remember getting a soul at all tbh. Did you go back and talk to Siegward again while he's napping, you learn the sleep gesture if you do, I can't see why the lack of that one interaction would cause him not to show up, but it's the only thing I can think of. It is weird on the soul front though, because Ludleth has a couple of things that require a demon's soul to create, but I don't believe I've had one.

I was expecting to have one after talking to Ludlleth as I definitely picked up something after killing it. Maybe this next demon will drop a soul. No DS last night, fell asleep early.

Found Patches, and subsequently Siegward. Just going back to the Deacons boss to farm some souls to buy back Siegwards armor. I love the Ring you can buy from Patches!

Ah where'd they show up for you in the end?

I went back to the tower in firelink. Went to the top, when I came back down the lift Patches had locked the gate. When you get out he's sitting up to the right in firelink.

I then went back to the Chapel bonfire; Siegward is now down the well outside the door.

Hmmmm.

Hm Hmmmmm ;)

Good to know :p

I went back to Farron Keep, beat Heysel for the second time, just getting all the items and stuff now, I imagine I'll hit a roadblock some point, and have to go to the Cathedral. I found one of the scrolls you are supposed to give to Orbeck of Vinheim the sorcery dude, it was in a cave with the Antiquated Set surrounded by damn curse frogs!!!

I bet they're not immune to a fire orb or six!

Heading to Farron Keep now myself.

Ugh, catacombs. Quite fun using the giant rolling ball of bones to kill everybody by luring them into it though.

Managed to get quite far in before falling into a pit area and getting mobbed by various hard hitting undead.

On the way there I found that scroll and set, the basilisks weren't too much trouble but that tree thing was annoying. I got a message saying Heysel had invaded but never saw him/her.

There's a second scroll in the Farron Keep area as well actually, from the Keep Ruins bonfire if you walk towards the gate for the Abyss Watchers, but roll off the ramp to your left as soon as you can, almost directly in front of you is a small area with 3 enemies and a bunch of dead Mushroom Dudes ala DS1, the Sage Scroll is just laying there on the ground. If those directions are crap, it's also near the 3 Tree Shaman dudes surrounding a Poison Gem. In fact if you kill those 3 dudes it nets you the Hat and Black Bow of Pharis, tip just use a bow from the bridge just before the Keep Ruins fire, snipe them one by one. Cheese Souls for the win lol

If the message about Heysel comes up, the place that she spawns is literally right in front of one of the the stairs leading up to the 3rd extinguishable flame, they would be the back stairs if you were following the trail of fires. So you go up one staircase, extinguish the flame, go down the back staircase and her spawn location is right in front of you, very close to the area with the cave actually. Just as a heads up, when she first spawns, she has this temporary invisibility thing going on.

I killed the Stray Demon on the bridge, first time it hit me with its grab attack, and literally threw me off the damn bridge, my mouth was agape for like 10 minutes, it was insane lol Was at the Farron Keep Perimetre bonfire when I turned it off last. Abyss Watchers here we come

I lucked out with those I think; unless they just weren't as hard as I was expecting.
They can be staggered which I guess helped.

Is it worth going back for Pharis stuff? I might have to just because I don't like leaving things behind.

I put it on this afternoon, with my boy watching. Worked through catacombs, killing skellies and bone wheels, all the way to a big nasty, who also fell on second attempt. He's so slow he could be done first go but I fucked up a bit. My boy was very impressed; he was giving me advice. Hope he doesn't have weird dreams tonight!

And following that.. best view in the game so far. Maybe any of the games. Jaw dropped.

Praise the moon!

Well the Black Bow is demonstrably better than the Longbow I was using before I would say. The Hat is just loot really, you'll already have better looking and more protective gear for sure. Frankly I would go back just because I hate missing loot, honestly the other scroll is probably more important, if you are going for Trophies/Achievements, you'll need it for all the sorceries. Really it's up to you I guess, I'm pretty OCD about loot tbh, why it takes me so long to play through an area.

I like playing Souls games with people who've never played before watching, it's always a cool experience ;)
