Are you implying they don't have any? That's so anti-boobist.

Finished. Man I'm not sure why do many seem to think this is the greatest example of modern fantasy. It was... Good! There was a lot to enjoy about these two books. I didn't hate it by any stretch, but that's it. Sooooo much freaking fluff that was URL it frustrating and unnecessary... Like there could have been so much cut without it ever effecting the plot. Denna is one of my least favourite characters in fiction and I hated every scene she was in, but other then that it was a well crafted world with a fascinating history and mix of cultures. I want to know what happens to Kvothe and will get the final one if it ever comes out.

Still, don't really get the hype.

Perhaps it's because they're popular and you are in fact a contrarian?

Naw but it's one of those books where if I'd read it at 15 or pre-Malazan I'd probably have enjoyed it a lot more. Never had a reason to read the concluding volume (Pat lost the key for the door didn't he).

For me the best bit was 100%
Spoiler
, everything else was just kinda ehhhhh.

Another thing the behind the scenes stuff (the religious) background stuff is pretty neat theory wise.

I think there is more information out there then the actual books are long

It’s neat!

I've come to the painful conclusion that even if Rothfuss were to finish the trilogy, I'm not going to read it.
After ditching book 2 midway through I've not had the inclination to pick it up again.

Interesting article even though it doesn't really say much beyond what we already know.

I wondered what had happened with the TV series. Shame to lose Miranda, but understandable for him to jump ship if it isn't going anywhere.

Speculation from a few sources that the saturation of fantasy tv series, and likelihood bk 3 would never see print and that would be the running negative narrative around any tv series drawing nasty GoT comparisons.

That sounds reasonably likely. I've never seen anything leave the popular concsciousness as fast as Game of Thrones, so as successful as it was in its prime I can see why they'd want to avoid comparisons.

Kingkiller could have actually been pretty good, it just needs 100% less Kvothe to get there. Take Kvothe out and it could be a decent TV show too!

Also Denna is the absolute worst.

And dragoncow.

And sex goddess/sex ninjas.

Just lots of cringe.

It’s funny, I’ve seen people describe the series, ESPECIALLY after book 2 as the ultimate teenage boy wish fulfillment fantasy…and honestly, it’s hard to argue.

The second book wasn't total teenage wish fulfillment. It's better than that - even if it has some really hinky parts.

However, Rothfuss has weaseled his way out of providing that new chapter for the charity money he raised promising that new chapter. That's really trash behavior and a gigantic red flag that whatever he's doing to deal with this writing process and basically his whole career isn't working. The series makes money still, which is shocking and maybe gives him a lifeline to unfuck all this.

The TV series was greenlit, but Showtime then spent an absolute ton of money on the Halo TV show and had a vast, gaping hole in their budget open up. Cancelling the Kingkiller show - even though it was more expensive after being greenlit - addressed that problem. Later on, selling the Halo show (internally) to Paramount+ resolved the problem fully. However, by that point the film project, which the TV show was supposed to tie in with, had collapsed and Lin-Manuel had moved on.

So the whole thing is currently dead in the water. I suspect Hollywood will circle back around to it once he gets the third book out. The mega-hunger for content that we've seen in the last 5-7 years is drying up quickly as Hollywood switches to money-saving mode, which makes it much less likely Rothfuss will get an adaptation soon.

I think this is a fair summary. There are definitely parts that are ridiculous teenage wish fulfillment, but it's not the sum of the whole. Ademre has stayed very clearly in my head because of how much I enjoyed it, and I read WMF when it came out in 2011. When it's good, it's still very good.

This is where he lost my sympathy. Nobody can say for certain but it seems a fair interpretation that he promised something that either wholly didn't exist or only partially existed, which is poor to say the least.

Thanks for the explanation - I guess it's firmly in "never say never" territory, but seems unlikely to happen.

Would bet money he made the promise figuring it would 'force' him to actually write the chapter, then didn't/couldn't.
