We've been over this several times, the guy's been suffering from mental health issues and other personal problems. That coupled with the project getting away from him has stopped him in his tracks supposedly. At some point it probably gets hard to deal with frustrated people.

I can't fault a person for not completing a book series if he's physically or mentally incapable. Writer's block is a real thing.

I mean, then don't sell your book series as a trilogy that's completed, if editing the first one makes that not so.

The publisher and the public were told the series was completed back when NOTW came out. I bought it on the back of that statement.

I have every right to feel like I was swindled by that when it turned out to be a lie of sorts.

Especially when other authors who sold "completed" series like Michael J. Sullivan, and Brent Weeks actually delivered those completed trilogies in a tight timeframe left for editing.

But is that the publisher's fault or Rothfuss's?
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

It's Rothfuss.

But I came with receipts. Here's an interview around the time NOTW was coming out or had come out where he says it's done and won't take long to come out as a trilogy. It may even be the one that I read where I decided to buy it since it was "done".

Snippet:

– What can readers expect from the two sequels and the trilogy that will follow this one?

Well…. I’ve already written them. So you won’t have to wait forever for them to come out. They’ll be released on a regular schedule. One per year.

Hey has anyone herd anything about book 3?

Rothfuss "lost" a bet for charity fundraising and will read the prologue and chapter 1 on stream sometime.

As to when that will be, I dunno. He certainly can stretch anything out to whatever time it ends up being.

Apparently this is happening tomorrow at 1pm cst on his Twitch account.

So some of this happened! The prologue and the first page of the first chapter were read on stream.

This tangent completely lost the cow puns theme and focused on peoples' beef with Rothfuss.

I point to our own SE as an author who steps up to the plate.

in the time that Pat hasn't produced the a book he claimed (upon selling t publisher, and his audience) was already finished SE knocked out a doorstopper a year (9 books) and paid back the leap of faith his publishers took with him, paying him for a 10 book series on the back of one that had been kicking about (in forms) for a decade.
At some stage surely the publisher has to take issue and be like....buddy? you remember that deal we signed....for a completed trilogy.....like 15 fucking years ago?

That's just it, and when he ghosts his editor who is none other than DAW president Betsy Wollheim herself...you know something strange is afoot.

As Wert posted elsewhere in this thread Rothfuss books still sell well to this day. The Publishers have sold millions of books. They earned a metric shit ton of money and stand to earn several more shit tons of money if Rothfuss writes more Kvothe books.

They'll be as patient as needed for the Golden Goose to lay another egg.

Meanwhile other BETTER DAW authors like Michelle West have to Patreon the end of their series because DAW bailed out on them due to slumped sales. I mean, from a business angle I get it...it just sucks that a non-producing writer gets to sail for a decade on the good monetary will that his first two books made...while a highly-proficient author who delivered like 14 books in her series in that time had to go to her fans to help her finish the final arc.

Maybe it will get the ASoIAF treatment---plan for the last book revealed via tv series? Hope Lin-Manuel Miranda stays on it, he could probably improve on Rothfuss. If Rothfuss's ego allows for collaboration maybe large chunks of the final book (particularly dialogue, almost verbatim) could effectively be written or have their outlines fleshed or ironed out a bit (flesh being ironed out, hmm...) by top-notch prestige tv writers (oh how the times have changed...).

We got no beef.
You just shepherded the thread to a different field.
It's not like the steaks were high or anything.
We had probably milked all the humour out of it anyways.

This. We've seen it again and again w Jordan, GRRM... if the book generates bucks there is nothing the publisher will not put up with.
It's not like these authors were fronted huge advances that the financers didn't make back already. Their next books are money in the bank.

They should just ask Brandon Sanderson to finish all their books.

On one hand, stormbad exists and that makes me die inside a little. On the other, WOT14 exists and that was fucking well good. Duality and all that.

As to Rothfuss, if the trilogy wasn't finished, it shouldn't have been sold as a trilogy. I'll never begrudge someone mental health issues at all, and I know what writer's block is like quite intimately, but at the least, sell it as a WIP, and don't lash out when people ask how the last one is going. On my part I have no investment because NOTW is the most bang average 5/10 book I ever read, but I can see easily where Quick is coming from on the point regards West. I understand that big publishing is all about money but it's a disheartening thing to see.
