Just saw this on Reddit.

Apparently his last book is coming out in two parts

Is it legit?

Then I can start reading his books next year

*Runs over to Westeros to see what they have to say*

While this is a placeholder date, people do believe that this is real, and that the final volume is being split into two parts. And I guess for now, this will be the conclusion. RSB has talked before of plans to write another duology or trilogy after the Aspect Emperor trilogy, but it wasn't a sure thing.

Can't find any mention of it coming out in two parts, but IIRC RSB said last spring that he'd finished the final draft and had sent it to his editor and that it would be released sometime next year.

Yup, it's happening. The book was 300,000 words but Bakker wanted to add a massive glossary like he did with The Thousandfold Thought which would make it a lot longer. Overlook are a small publisher and publishing such a big book is problematic for them, even if it's small fry for say Erikson or Martin. So they've split it into two, with Book 3 now being called The Great Ordeal and Book 4 The Unholy Consult.

Note that Bakker's plan was for three series, The Prince of Nothing, The Aspect-Emperor and the final series-that-shall-not-be-named-yet. However, the primary story begun in the very first volume apparently reaches a resolution in The Great Ordeal and The Unholy Consult. The final series will round things off but is not immediately required to finish the series. So it can end with these last two books. Bakker has said he will write the final two(?) volumes and self-publish if needed, but without a big publisher's support it will take a lot longer.

There's already early artwork up for Book 3:

Skimmed Pat's review to avoid spoilers.
Slightly dissapointed to hear that it's Part 1 of 2, but hey, DoD left us with a ridiculous cliffhanger and we (the Malaz fans) survived it. So I'm sure we can weather this one as well.

Not pre-ordering, but I have a soft spot for Bakker, so I'll probably insta-buy the non-hardcover version to fit the other 2 volumes as soon as I see it.

If we want Overlook and Orbit to publish The Unholy Consult, everyone should buy The Great Ordeal when it is released. . .

Amazon.in has it listed for 29th September. If that date sticks, will order it in August.

Overlook have confirmed the July 5th pub date, so this one appears to be a go. Orbit, on the other hand, have yet to commit to a definite pub date, so they might release the book in August or September.

But yeah, given how much of a mindfuck it was for them to agree to split the novel in half, if Bakker fans want TUC to ever see the light, then they have to buy TGO when it comes out. It's the only way to make sure that TUC will be published in a more or less timely fashion. . .

Just finished THE GREAT ORDEAL.

Review after I pick my jaw off the floor. For supposedly the first half of what was supposed to be a longer book, that's a convergence and an ending that would leave even Erikson envious. Thankfully, only a year (or less, hopefully) to wait for the last part.
