I bought The Unholy Consult in Kindle form when it released on 6 Jul... finished it a couple of nights ago, and it's left me really restless.

The ending... oh that ending! I cannot get over how brutal that last line of the novel is :apt2: In many ways it feels like a great way to end the series. That's fine, mic dropped, go home. Nothing more to see here... On the other hand a part of my ape brain is going NOOOOOOOOOOO.... this CANNOT be the end! Fantastic writing, and a great read. Well worth the 14 year build-up.

My only quibble - I would've loved to see the events at the end be a bit more elaborated, over a few more pages maybe. I'm not saying I wanted a Poirot moment of someone sitting down and explaining it all to my dumbfounded ass, but I'm saying I wouldn't have refused a hug and some kind words :apt2:

I got it on Thursday and finished it Sunday night, I can't stop thinking about it...I'm constantly reading the three seas forum and the westeros thread to get interpreatations of what happened.

He has mentioned in the past about a final duology/trilogy to finish off the story completely but at the moment I dont think there is a deal in place. Could be a long angonising wait for them to be published...if they ever do...

STILL no earbook news.

Fuck.

What are the odds it just pops up on (one of) the official release date(s)?

Would it be overly intrusive to try to email the reader and ask if he's finished the book yet? He probably doesn't get much fan mail....

oh hey, THERE it is.....

https://www.recorded...s/9781501976865

Dec 15 2017. LoooOOOOoooong wait is long.

Based on an anecdote that Orton shared with mrganondorf (bakkerfans) and I, I'll bet they are just starting to record now with that date.

Yeah, the last series hasn't been picked up (though reception of TUC/TAE will make the difference I'm sure). He's got plenty of pieces of the sequel series written and as well as the last last line/scene/etc and I know that if it's not picked up by a trad publisher he plans to self-publish but time will tell.

Plus TUC isn't even released in NA yet until the 25th, completing worldwide release. Given time and noise, I'm sure we'll see the third series. The worry is, of course, that if Overlook (his primary publisher) don't buy it and another publisher is interested that Overlook won't give up the rights to PON/TAE - which would be remarkably jerkish on their behalf because they don't reprint PON or TAE anyhow so it's not like they're making money off them.

Totally hated the ending, really enjoyed most of the book. but really... so annoyed at the ending. worst part was the fact that in the ebook it was at like 66%, so when that chapter ended i thought 'Holy sh*t thats unexpected, wheres this going?' turned the page and was the third apocalypse in my house for the rest of the day.

I started my "judging eye" re-read. Planning to marathon all 4 (I've only read the first 2 previously).

I find myself constantly referring back to the comprehensive glossary at the back of the "thousandfold thought" in order to get my bearings.

Smart man. I think the best way to consume TAE is in its entirety.

I actually reread the entire series (PoN+ TAE) and held off on The Great Ordeal until this one came out as well.
Its been a bleak month, a tad too much "Death came swirling down" for my liking.

I can see that - though, I am a strange bird who finds the striving against the world by the characters immensely uplifting.

Wow. For most of the book, TUC is one of the greatest epic fantasy novels ever written.

(Though people looking for conventionally likable characters, charming dialogue, or a satisfyingly conclusive ending won't find much of that....)

Looking forward to the final series.

Bakker's Reddit AMA is interesting, and clarifies some aspects of TUC and the next series (spoilers):

I hear you! Between the release intervals and the enormous number of names, UC was not an easy read. I kind of know what went on, lost some characters on the way through, and was thoroughly surprised by the "who's running the show" revelations. Glad the stillborn child didn't turn into the No-God (I hope I got that right). I praise any readers who followed Bakker's text easily. The re-read will be interesting, I quick-scanned uninteresting things too much.

It does not reward a shallow reading, that's for sure. The reread of the entire series after TUC's Layers of Revelation is going to be insane!

You'd think that people registered on this very board would know that certain kinds of books don't reward skimming...

That said, I'm enjoying tUC. I think PoN was overall better, but the entire thing is still one of my favourite series.
Puck was not birthed, she was cleaved from a lava flow and shaped by a fierce god's hands. - [worry]
Ninja Puck, Ninja Puck, really doesn't give a fuck..? - [King Lear]

Yeah... just... yeah.

I feel like with the last two books Bakker has graduated from genre to full on (L)iterature and as such has alienated a bunch of genre fans.

Fare thee well, fair-weather readers.
