Not a big fan of "Christian Rock" considering what I have heard. Although I must admit to not really pay much attention to that particular scene, my nan would kill me! My sister loves it though. She has so many Christian Metal CD's it scares me.

Although I do love the christian band Reliant K, those guys are great.

There is no such thing as Christian metal. All metal artist are in the service of Satan and doing his work when playing their music. In fact, all musicians are in the service of Satan as it is well known that the Devil stole the Beat from the Lord a long, long time ago.

Its all very well being Christian and making rock music, but when its devoted to solely christian topics I find it a bit strange. Are they modern rock hymns? A normal rock band sings about whatever they like, it has no particular direction or mission. So why should a band want to sing just about christian issues? This restriction makes me think they are evangelical, single-minded, and to be frank, a llittle bit scary.

My own (reasonably extensive) experience of Christian rock has been that it is just bad music. In much the same way, most of the Christian books I have read have been shudderingly awful. It's not that I object to Christians writing books or music - in fact some of my favourite books were written by Christians! It's just that usually when a Christian tries exclusively to produce something that's acceptable to church it's pretty terrible. There are obviously some good pieces, but they're pretty limited. Personally, I think it's the inability of Christian reviews to actually criticise and point out how ridiculously crap much of it is in comparison to the 'secular' music scene - or else they don't listen to the 'secular' music scene on principle, in which case I have immense pity for their sense of taste.

I'd actually like to use some secular material in church sometime - because I find that the music and the books that inspire my own faith are often not Christian at all. The whole niche of Christian rock smacks of Christians trying to live in a little utopia, and all it does is separate them from the real world even more...

My music has changed now. Most Christian rock sucks pretty badly. With one major exception - Becoming the Archetype are one of my favourite bands, up there with the likes of Opeth...
The rest? Well I have hardly listened to them for ages...

Portnoy is Jewish, as is Jordan Rudess, whilst Petrucci is Catholic, leaving LaBrie as the only, what- Protestant? ...of the band. Don't know 'bout Myung, though...:confused:

I was suprised to learn that one of my favourite bands, Byzantine, has a christian lead singer/songwriter.

He's not overt or preachy about it, and his lyrics arent soley christian. I twigged when I read the inlay and he thanked "The big JC", and one or two of the songs took on a different meaning: where I previously took them as an attack on christianity in general, they now became an attack on organised religions hypocrisy toward their faith.

Still all nonesense, but it suprised me.

Amazing band, too. Anyone that even slightly likes metal should listen to them. Of particular interest from the christian perspective would be the song 'Taking up serpents'.

I see religion and music as two separate things, and they shouldn't mix. Styles of music do not reflect morality or anything like that, so anyone who thinks heavy metal is wrong is just stupid, ignorant, or any mixture.

Personally, I also don't agree with religion itself, and this would be just another example of how people use essentially false views to further ones that are even less credible. But thats neither here nor there.

I don't agree that religion and music can't mix, as music should be something that you put passion and soul into, and if you have a faith, then music is a great way of expressing it etc.

However I do agree that people who say heavy metal is wrong are stupid.
