I'm sort of with Gothos on this. I've sunk some massive amount of hours into Rome, and i enjoyed it immensely. But after a while you just can't be bothered with battles unless it's an important one where you're facing a much greater force and you stand to lose a lot if neglect it. But if you play the strategic map right, those things doesn't really happen that much. Meaning the actual game you play is the strategic map is the game you play and, let's be honest, Crusader Kings does a much better job at that.

Does anybody need/care for either the Football Manager, Tomb Raider or Skyrim cards? I have extras if anybody wants to trade. I still need KSP, Reus and Torchlight II.

I also have 2 extra Football manager cards and a Prison Architect card I would like to trade for a Bioshock, Riptide, Kerbal Space Programme, Reus or Torchlight card.

Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I have Summer Sale, CK2, Eagor: Masters... cards, and will have Tomb Raider and Skyrim cards after I play more.
I'd really like the 3 SR3 cards I don't have if anyone has any SR3 cards.

Total War is actually... rather not as good as it used to be for me. After the 100th battle it gets really tedious so I just tend to autocalc them. And on just the strategic map, TW isn't much at all... at all.
I haven't really enjoyed a TW game since MEDIEVAL II, and that more than ROME only because of the excellent mods, like the LORD OF THE RINGS one which is better than any of the actual TOTAL WAR games themselves. That said, some of that is down to not liking guns - I don't think the game does a great job of modelling them very well - and not getting heavily into the Shogun period. ROME II will be a bigger test to see if I've just gone off the series or if it was more the time period.
Certainly ROME II looks brilliant and they have addressed some core issues with the endgame. They also seem to be doing a bit more with the strat map as well.
As for the CRUSADER KINGS comparison, I like CK but it's a very, very different type of game. It's all about diplomacy, economy and so on. It's simply not possible to steam-roller the continent with a vast army. TOTAL WAR allows you to do that. Unrealistic? Sure, but it's fun in its own way just as CK is in its.

I agree with Werthead that Empire was not as good as the previous games because of guns. Still I found Rome was as fun as you chose to make it. Playing slow and methodical you could own the map after a thousand years. Sending out your armies on an endless campaign never stopping and trying to do it in 200 years, and the game is hard.
Also auto resolving the battles was horrendously biased towards the roman factions. Playing rome sadly was like playing the game on easy mode. Any other faction and you really want to oversea those battles

Never really played as Rome much, if I'm honest. Numidia (javelin cavalry with cantabrian circle? yes please), Germania (germanic tribes with fucking phalanx formation? dafuq? but berserkers and gothic cavalry ftw), Carthage (ELEPHANTS) and Pontus (I don't really remember) are pretty much all the factions I played as. So yeah.
As for autocalc, don't think I did it much at all in Medieval I, Rome or Medieval II. It started with Empire, and continued to Shogun II. Maybe it's just TW overload? After all, it's really like playing the same game over several years, not much about any of it changes -

Yeah backgrounds is one of the things you can get.
As per the FAQ:
- random emoticon item created for this game, that can use in chat or discussions;

I enjoy both CKII and Total War, but for different reasons I think. Wert is right in that CKII is at its core a character game, which encourages roleplaying and diplomatic exchanges rather than just war. Total War is more of a war-simulator than a dynastic/IR simulator. I would probably say I enjoy playing CKII more as I enjoy the roleplaying aspect more than the grand campaign and micromanaging battles of TW. That said, war in CKII doesn't have that much depth, most often it's simply who has more troops. Also the truce system means that annexing kingdoms by the sword takes a very long time and is much less fun than working out how to get it another way (such as by assassination). Nothing really beats TW in the pure pleasure of seeing your army marching into battle and pummeling your enemy into dust. It just gets stale if there's no challenge, as it's often just victory after victory. CKII on the other hand is a much more up-and-down game, where kismet often kicks you in the balls without the slightest notice, ruining all your best-laid plans, which while frustrating makes for a varied and interesting campaign.
I realise I basically just echoed Wert's statement, but oh well.
I would disagree that you can't just steamroll the continent with your armies, as it's certainly possible. As I said though there's just not as much depth to doing it.

I've only bought Deus Ex: Human Revolution so far because I'm simply too strapped for cash seeing as how I'm moving in a few weeks and the joboffer I received wasn't an offer after all...
But I think I'll get plenty of enjoyment out of Deus Ex anyway, so it's all good

As someone who has completed Rome TW with every faction, multiple times on the hardest difficulty I would say that yes battles can become stale unless you provide yourself with a challenge. Like going Gaul is surprisingly difficult as your forces are spread very thin and you have no special unit, unlike Rome, the German Phalanxes,British Chariots/Chariot Archers etc. I start on the other side of the world to Rome, usually with Parthia which is the weakest nation over there and let Rome build itself up. Its good having each family dominate alot of territory and they have alot of full stack armies which are enjoyable to dismantle.
I really hope they have changed the diplomacy though. Cornering the last city and surrounding it with 5 full armies of elite troops then being told ceasefire is out of the question while I still have blood in my veins is utterly stupid. I know its total war but id like more economic and political tools.
