Well that opener was better than pretty much every episode they did last season. Hands down. Hopefully S3 continues to be this interesting and well paced.

That was a terrific premiere. The best season opener by a landslide and one of the most excellent episodes yet - even without the concentrated awesomeness of Ming Na. And Coulson's line... "wait, is this still cagey banter?" - amazing.

Poor Fitz though. He became one of the best things about the show almost over night at the start of Season Two, Ian DeCaestaecker's work has been really superb. I see him as a bit like this show's Wesley Wyndham Price.. he starts out carefree and bubbly, and just gets so much pain and trauma thrown at him he becomes a very different (and much more interesting) character. I am genuinely rooting for him.

I'm also wondering whether Simmons' reveal at the end is a tie-in/ long-distance setup for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (another planet), or Thor: Ragnarok (another realm), or Avengers: Infinity War? Or maybe all three? Or something else?

Fitz Simmions is an awesome combo. I've always loved their dynamic. And I have to agree with you that Fitz's performance this episode was.... WOW! You could feel his pain and frustration and totally bought into his I have nothing to lose mentality throughout the whole episode.

The promo for the next episode actively calls it "a planet on the other side of the Universe". She's PROBABLY on one of the planets within/under the purview of the Kree empire since the monolith is a Kree device of some kind. She did, you'll have noticed" rub dirt/mud into her bleeding wound...probably to disguise her scent form whatever she's running from. So perhaps some kind of prison planet where other things from other worlds are sent to languish?

But yeah, Fitz's scene DEMANDING the monolith to DO SOMETHING shows just how incredible Ian DeCaestaecker's acting is. He's easily the best thing about this show.

I agree. I like how he's always been quite courageous, even when he's scared. He's a badass in his own way. Same goes for Simmons. I like how they are a bit like the Coulson/May friendship, only less about ass-kicking and more about SCIENCE BIATCH XD I remember how in s2 Coulson and May had to act like a couple and dance, and how we caught a glimpse of how their friendship must've been in the old days before Bahrain. They reminded me a little of the science twins then. Coincidentally, those two duos are in my top 5, along with Hunter. I want the 5 of them to have a mission together!

Weirdly enough, I think Coulson and May have the least chemistry of anyone on the show.

Some of this is the show writers appeared to get bored of the "spy on Coulson" dynamic for so long and put them with the other members much more often than each other (as in Coulson being away team leader and May being home base team leader).

I would say that, context wise, it was "cagey banter". But admittedly, I thought KGB at first too.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes of this season.

Quite surprised that they rescued Simmons so quickly. Did have a chuckle at them finding the room with the machine via a secret door but then it suddenly not having a roof so they could lower the obelisk into it. Also loved the Indiana Jones moment when Ward beat up everyone on the boat then pulled his gun for the one guy who had the audacity to hit him back

Agree with what everyone's said about Fitz - really impressed with De Caestecker.

Absolutely agree on Fitz! His is by far the best character on the show so far. I was rather surprised as well, Serenity, but I'm not disappointed. Theirs is the best part on the SHIELD side of the show. Sure, I like Bobbie too, but I can't really stand Hunter all that much. yeah, he's pretty awesome, but whenever those two are together I roll my eyes and tell the show to get on with it.

I'm really glad they've not done a "oh look, I'm ward and now I'm, like, totally a good guy again" yet. Let him unleash his inner psychopath!
