Not to mention the only reason to spend that much cash would be buying pre-built. If he were to build, he'd get a machine capable of running TW3 for 60%, if not less of that price.

Hell, only thing I'm lagging on is the CPU, and I put less than a grand of CAD into my 3 y.o. Rig (factoring in the price of a legit copy of Win 7 I got as an Xmass gift from my father);and that includes a GPU upgrade--so 2 GPUs!. Right now I can either try overclocking my existing 2.8 gHz CPU for free, to try to hit the 3.3 min req, or wait another few months, then drop a bill for a Black Edition 4.0 gHz AMD CPU, overclock THAT, and be futureproof until the next-gen consoles roll around. My shiny new GeForce 740, albeit it's no Titan and it's still only measly 2GB of pretties, is already DirectX 12 compatible. Then in another half a year hopefully SSD prices drop so that I can pick one up for cheap to shunt my Windows install onto it and then I literally don't need to touch my setup for another 5 years in all likelihood.

Edit: then you've got the dirt-cheap games coming from all types of digital sales; backward compatability going back to the 80s; access to console libraries for the *ahem* morally flexible *ahem* thru emulations; the modding scene... I just don't see how it can be compared.

Incidentally, before TW3 comes out I'll probably do 5th or 6th playthrough of the original, and then play TW2 with the combat rebalance mod, since the guy responsible for it was apparently hired by CDPRED to help with the combat for TW3, :)

It's a negligible difference (to me) at best. I've neither the time nor inclination to nerd out over high spec PCs. :p

Side note: My initial experience with Witcher 2 has not been positive; the tutorial was impossible to complete*.

*it looks like it's a bug - basically, on equip, the bombs wouldn't throw and it appears this is a known issue.

The level of detail on the character models is... astonishing.

You can skip the tutorial. The opening prologue where you're storming a castle serves just as well as an introduction to the game mechanics. Also it's phenomenal opening to the game.

Due to the dramatic plunge the Canadian dollar took, i decided to not wait for the inevitable price hike for all things techy and imported.
picked up a new CPU (APU, apparently), for $115. AMD A8 6600k quad-core Black edition. Base speed-3.9 GHz

Seeing as we're approaching release, there's a bunch of promo material.

There's an opneing 15 min sequence I didn't watch yet, and then there's this:



supposedly, 200 hours long.

My current gaming plan is to wrap up Pillars of Eternity, and get started on a Witcher 1 + 2 replay in 2 weeks.

1 was a PC only release. It`s great, but it`s a bit rough, and the UI is very PC-centric and not necessarily easy to get. The game requires spending some time to master its quirks, but it`s worth it.

Witcher 2 was more in line with traditional action-RPG, except they did great story-telling, focusing on choice and consequence over quantity of content--to the extent that based on a decision in Act 2, you played a completely different Act 2 (2 versions of it), each with their own optional quests, etc. Act 3 was more similar for both paths, but there were still significant choices to make.

Of course one thing its detractors use is that it can`t be great, b/c you are using a pre-set character, and not everyone finds Geralt to be a likeable fellow. Also, CDPRed tries hard to deal with "mature themes". Their execution of said themes isn't always the greatest, so to say.

I'd recommend trying 2 to see if you like it, as 3 is gonna be more of the same, basically.

No, but they confirmed your tattoo from the previous game will port over - if you didn't remove it! And two new videos were released in case anyone missed them. Gameplay trailer looks amazing. And then a Charles Dance video of Charles Dance being Charles Dance.


I can't for the life of me figure out how to embed youtube videos, so you're going to have to deal with links.

You need to remove the s from https. If you just copy paste the link the forum will often embed the link by its own volition. Otherwise you should put the link (without the s) between these brackets:

Starting to get hyped for this now.

I'm really hoping for a decent Witcher story in a living, breathing world; maybe something along the lines of Red Dead Redemption.

I don't know, these days I seem to be far more absorbed by games that invest in 'realism' - not in the amount of grass blades and fps, but in the option to do things like set up a camp, cook a hunted kill, stop for a drink in a bar, interfere (or not) in an argument etc.

Moments where the weather effects, the night/day cycle, and the behaviour of the npcs merge to become something else entirely. Red Dead was great for this, not for the combat or story, but for being able to walk down a street in the rain, into a bar, have a drink, start a fight, crash into room and stay until morning, with random encounters along the way.

In a way I'd like more of this sort of thing - over yet another set of items to collect, I'd like to see more 'character building' activities, that add to the rpg element of a game.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how they've converted the style of W2 into an open world.

I'm very excited for how this plays out (and if my hardware can handle it decently to boot).

Just 2 weeks now. If me and the gf don't get the CE from the reserve list by then, I'll just get the digital edition I guess. Gotta play, man. Gotta play.
