I saw the trailer for this. Shit looks kinda glorious but I've never played 1 & 2.
1 was a PC only release. It`s great, but it`s a bit rough, and the UI is very PC-centric and not necessarily easy to get. The game requires spending some time to master its quirks, but it`s worth it.
Witcher 2 was more in line with traditional action-RPG, except they did great story-telling, focusing on choice and consequence over quantity of content--to the extent that based on a decision in Act 2, you played a completely different Act 2 (2 versions of it), each with their own optional quests, etc. Act 3 was more similar for both paths, but there were still significant choices to make.
3 is supposedly open-world, while retaining the solid story-telling. no one is really sure how well that will work, but if they manage to pull it off (and I recall seeing some early dev talks as to the systems they designed to make it work), then it`ll be one of the greatest RPGs ever.
Of course one thing its detractors use is that it can`t be great, b/c you are using a pre-set character, and not everyone finds Geralt to be a likeable fellow. Also, CDPRed tries hard to deal with "mature themes". Their execution of said themes isn't always the greatest, so to say.
I'd recommend trying 2 to see if you like it, as 3 is gonna be more of the same, basically.

And I want to state that Ment has out-weaseled me by far in this game.
