So for the previously married, is it a retreat from the pain of love, or sowing your wild oats, or something else? I ask this because you're capable of falling in love and of commitment etc., and this new thing is a deliberate eschewing of that goal. It's decidedly not the let-love-come-as-it-may method of dating. Also, did you consider not pursuing any romantic activity at all, including trysts and such? A period of temporary celibacy, I suppose, for lack of a better term.

Man, when my first marriage exploded into supernova, I left town, then the state. I had been sober for a good year, and that had to be immediately rectified. I didn't bother with pursuing the ladies for a few months, I think that temporary celibacy is a good way of naming it. In fact, the next time I was with a woman, she caught me wasted and with lowered inhibitions, or I may have stayed away from her too, as she was bad news. I was sworn off against serious relationships for a good 5 years.

"Started talking to" is very vague. Is that code for something else? If someone starts talking to me, does that mean that he wants to be friends or am I supposed to assume he wants something more and get upset if he hooks up with one of my friends? I can't even count the number of times I've had a crush on a guy only to have him use our connection to get to one of my friends. In fact, I think it might even have happened 3-4 times with the same friend. What can you do? I can't remember ever thinking it was worth losing a friendship over, either with the guy or the girl. I used to joke that whatever it is this friend had, she should just save some of the excess in a bottle and give it to me. Is there something I'm missing here?

The truth is that if her friendship with these other girls is strong, then it should survive long after you've come and gone. They'll probably even laugh about you years later in a "hey! do you remember that one guy ..." sort of way. I know, not necessarily what you want to hear, but that's what girlfriends do. If you "start talking to" another of her friends and it's enough to cause jealousy and a rift, then their friendship was probably fairly superficial to begin with, and that's not really your fault.

"Started talking to" probably means he was flirting with her lightly. In which case, he is best served with going out with her and purposely rigging the date so that he seems exciting, but ultimately not the right fit for her. It's a tough tightrope act to walk and if he does it successfully, she'll fix him up with her friends of her own volition.

Or he could just wait a while, hang around, be her actual friend for a while and then see if there's romance out there to be found.

I like the second option better, but it depends on how people want to go about things.

If you fancy one of her friends, go talk to her and be your charming self.

if you hit it off, go back to girl number 1 and tell her the 'TRUTH'. That you feel you have *bleurgh* connection to said girl and ask her if she's okay with it. I guarantee that she'll say yes (despite, whatever she feels). Unless she has no pride...in which case you're fucked.

Immediately ask out the said girl before the furies get together and royally fuck up any chance of romance between you and said girl.

Girl number 1 will follow through with what she has stated and will believe that she is okay with it and hopefully, eventually will this will become true.

Do not hesitate for a second after asking her if its okay or you will end up with a handful of nothing.

I actually agree that the tighter tightrope is how to do this without coming off as a flake or a cad. You'll lose both girls that way and you won't even be able to be friends with them at the end of the day if you mess it up. As long as you haven't confessed any intent and haven't really transitioned from light flirting to anything that could be construed as dating, you can still potentially, believably friend-zone girl #1. As amphibian says, if you do it really well, like actually become a real friend, she might even put in a good word for you. Besides, if you think she's nice and all, but aren't interested in her romantically, it would be best not to string her along. So in that way, it's the right thing to do.

However, if you and girl #1 are in any way perceived as an item, girl #2 will not want to have anything to do with you. Firstly, because hopefully she has some sense of loyalty to her friend, and secondly, because nobody wants to get involved with a guy that changes his mind that easily. And if girl #2 blows you off, and rightly so, don't even think about trying to run back to girl #1. In other words, you have to pick one.

Congratulations, you are more of a grown-up than you previously were.

I've a lot of catching up to do to you in other areas for sure, but this one area I do know from a year and change of tomcatting around in a large group of friends. I got some relationship moves right and I got many wrong in that one, but I did find my best friends in the end and both ladies are awesome (one is my significant other and the other is my actual best friend).

It was a really fun year though. It was like I couldn't fail at first. Everything was turning up Milhouse, then I accidentally on purpose got involved with a truly crazy woman who decided to seriously screw with my life in many ways.
