From what I heard Matt Smith has been cast in a key role, now there are a lot of good guys already in the movies and since the death of snoke there are few major bad guys, based on that there seems to be an opening for a key villain too but then again there's never really been more than a couple villains per movie, should be interesting to see.

I hope Dominic Monaghan has a decent role too, but for all we know it could be just a small part.

See, for me it's less about hating KK, or not thinking she's a savvy business woman. She totally is, and has the resume as a producer to back that up. I've said a few times she's producer on MOST of the movies I loved growing up, because she worked with filmmakers on a lot of defining 80's and 90's films.

A well-versed Producer, is NOT (however), a creative director of an entire franchise. That's the stumble here. KK is being treated as the Kevin Feige of Lucasfilm. Overseeing not just the business side of the map, but also being in charge of the creative one. On that front, she's a piss poor judge of creative character, as shown by the various director, writer, and overall managerial dustups in her short tenure as the head of LFL (which we've listed before).

As to the decision to keep her on as head for 3 more years. It's not like Disney could do anything else. The optics of Iger and the shareholders ousting her and replacing her now would be horrific from a business standpoint. It was simply never going to happen like that. The other aspect of that is IF they tried to shop for another CEO for LFL and found no one willing at this point...the important point about that is it's a Bush / Obama situation...the new person would be on the hook for whatever results in Episode IX, on the back of TFA and TLJ as a story. No one would be willing to take that on, and it would be unfair to expect that really. KK will own whatever happens with IX, RESISTANCE, and The Jon Favreau TV show. If she departs after that, no one loses much face regardless of the performance of those things...as sh can say she's closed that chapter of the company, and it's time for new blood, or whatever.

Now, IF Disney is smart...they would hire or push someone into a creative role who has those skills to work UNDER KK and report to her. Someone with an impeccable Creative Director resume (not someone like Kiri Hart or Pablo Hidalgo, both of whom have proven that in the Story Group they can't even keep Canon straight for 4 years), but someone like Dave Filoni, or Kevin Feige.

So yeah, KK staying around is a bit of a no-brainer in hindsight, for those reasons. But unless they have someone with a strong creative hand working beneath her...then even IX is doomed to perform possibly poorly.

--------

Speaking of: Did anyone hear the most recent rumours about JJ's IX?

What we know so far?

A portion of it takes place in the forest...surprisingly the SAME global band of northern boreal forest that the Redwoods belong to in North America, just the patch in England instead. So score one for the "rehash of ROTJ" crowd.

Another rumour has it being that the Resistance is seeking "help" at the beginning of the movie, and one of those quests for help brings Finn & Rose to ....and I'm not kidding...Rotta The Hutt (Jabba's son...for those not in the know)...whom they get onto their side including the rest of the Hutts.

Another has it that Maz Kanata has a big silver SAIL BARGE....yes, a floating pirate SAIL BARGE, which is where Rey, Chewie, and Lando are at some point in the plot.

Also, the inclusion of Lando (thought due to Billie Dee's health problems mean he won't be exerting himself that much), apparently coincides with the Anakin Saber. Apparently Lando found it upon returning to Cloud City, and gave it to Maz, which is why she had it in TFA.

So you know...totally different from ROTJ...while being laid up right alongside it.

What's amusing about this is that the big media sites that picked up the story and ran with it... didn't even read the study. The phD author of the study himself said they all got it wrong and were reporting it incorrectly with misleading clickbait headlines.

The focus was about 200-300-odd people who tweeted directly at RJ with negativity, and the proof was that half of THOSE were Russians trolls or bots. That's a small sample, science-wise, to make a study about...and not indicative of "fandom" as much as it is indicative of "twitter is a cesspool of assholes" full stop.

...although it makes me wonder why Russians would be so invested in attacking pop culture stuff like this? That makes little sense to me. Is weaponizing a division in the fandom of a movie series really that important? Seems like a vast waste of resources to me....but then I'm neither Russian nor a bot, so what do I know?

In abstract that would not do any good.

I'd say a lot of the criticism that movie got (narrative choices, moves away from the story line set up) would do nothing for Russian trolls.

But there was also a bunch of criticism that would fall right into the sweet spot of the type of thing Russian trolls were trying to achieve. Going after cast diversity, powerful roles for women and narratives where bumbling men make things worse not listening to them, the broader "the people profiting are the real villains" message of the casino detour. Roughly half of what was complained of in that movie was stuff you could stoke the alt right over, and stuff you can also stoke a strong reaction and push back to.

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.

Yeah, I guess that's a fair assumption considering their main political mandate.

Everything is Gamergate.

That said, I think it's clear a lot of people just didn't like the movie, regardless of Wascally Wussians.

New star wars live action show titles "The Mandalorian"

Pretty exciting, I guess the rumours were true about it being about mandalorians.
Could Sabine play a role?

I seriously doubt she'll be front and center.
An Easter Egg ref at best (like the Ghost and Chopper in TFA) would be my guess, but i suspect they won't risk a live action prime time drama by tying it muchly to a cartoon.

You're probably right, maybe mentioning her or something, it would be pretty hard to cast someone live action to play a cartoons role. Unless they kept her helmet on and just used the voice actress from the show.
But I agree I doubt she will be a major character, most of these shows have liked to introduce all new casts with a few throwbacks to older ones (at least in the animated ones so far)

Rumour time.

The current buzz is that Matt Smith (yes, THAT Matt Smith) role in IX is that of a Young Palpatine. The source that said this said that it's not a minimal role either. That he gets decent screen time. That's cool. I like it.

So now here is how you can keep TLJ as canon, AND please everyone who hates it....ready? ( I mean this likely won't happen, but the idea that Smith would be playing Sheev as a young man has to have SOME kind of reason, right?)

Using something like the 'World Between Worlds' from REBELS (closed loop time travel), Maz, Finn and Rey trying to discover who Snoke was and how he co-opted Ben Solo... step back in time to what turns out to be Emperor Palpatine's youth before The Phantom Menace….and they see/come upon a vicious lightsaber duel between two individuals. One is young Palpatine, and another individual….who it turns out is his brother (both vying for the slot as Darth Plagueis’ Sith apprentice)….and that brother is Snoke. Palpatine bests Snoke in combat (giving him the scars we see on him later in life, most especially the huge laceration on his head) and Sheev becomes Plagueis apprentice, while Snoke is sent to the unknown Regions and forgotten, where he heals and bides his time.

The goal is using this knowledge and the Wold Between Worlds to stop the First Order from being created by figuriing out how to stop Snoke from ever creating the FO OR co-opting Ben.

The main storyline other than this can be Poe, Leia, Lando and whoever else fighting Kylo's First Order in the normal/existing post TLJ timeline, but losing to them...and the timeline shift saves them in the end.

Success of the time travel plan means Kylo Ren never becomes who he is in TFA, and the movie ends with a good sided Ben Solo and Rey jointly leading the Jedi. The offshoot of this is allowing Luke to live in the revised timeline, but deciding not to lead the new Jedi.

I mean…if there was a way to circumvent the events that pissed people off about TLJ, but still allow it to remain canon and everything around it, and follow up on threads from TFA that CLEARLY JJ meant to have better trajectories, Snoke being chief among them…this could do it.

For me at least. Things about Snoke are like #1 on the list of things required for me to get back on board with SW for Episode IX, so that would fit.

Also, how cool would it be to see two Sith trainees going at each other for approval of their Master? Something fresh we've never seen in SW thus far.

Your solution to Star Wars is Dr Who. Makes sense. :p

I mean, some of that sounds pretty good, but just having a "go back in time and fix everything" seems kinda lame to me.

I like the part about the young palpatine & snoke stuff, that would be cool, if the rumours are true about Smith playing him then there could definitely be something to that.

I agree about the time thing...but I have a feeling it was introduced on REBELS intentionally so the movies could use it.

I also think that it would be very difficult for JJ to end the trilogy considering where RJ left it character-wise...without something like this. I could be wrong, and we might be in for ROTJ Redux.
