I for one welcome our anti nautical jungle overlords and will happily toil in their awkwardly gripped leafy temples....

Because they don't actually read the books.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

They're missing out on Kallor humping all those ships then.

That's my favorite ICE joke ever, btw. Good work, Vaddon Ra.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I'm tempted to agree. In some countries they apparently even recycle exact covers for different series.

The title is BLOOD AND BONE.

Not JUNGLE AND LEGS.
Not VINES AND PILLARS.
Not SWORD AND SKIRT.

You'd think they might at least have some blood or bones on there somewhere...
In fact, the FoD cover probably would have fit this better.

Cheap flight to China then hired a guide would be my guess!

All joking aside, considering they have ripped off a photograph its not too bad.

Still did think the boats were going to be ICE's thing.

I agree with HD that it would look a lot more decent (and kind of original, for fantasy) if it just didn't have the guy on it.

LOL at the grip...otherwise it's generic, competent, uninspired - hope they keep the awkward swordsmen about to whack himself in the face for the lulz though.

Very Nice catch.

They need to change the artist really fast.

I miss the boats ;)

On a serious note, I read the drop in contextual relation to the contents of ICE's books (this one clearly coming from the book's former title with vague generic knight for no reason but 'coz it's fantasy') and just drop in general effort as a sign that the publisher (whose job it would be to inform the artist about the book) just doesn't see value to the series any longer, but are obliged to continue publishing it due to the five-book contract.

The covers for NoK and RotCG weren't relative to a particular point, but they at least conveyed much better in the abstract the feel and nature of the books. This one just says: 'I read the previous title'.

I do miss the boats, though.

Do you think the Assail novel will be the last Malazan material released by Cam given the publishers lessening interest in promoting the series?

IIRC in a interview after publishing SW Cam expressed an interest in publishing prequel material concerning the early days of the Malazan Empire [ie. the Old Guard] and sequel material concerning ST/Cotillion after he finishes the current series. I dont recall if this was meant to be novellas in the vein of B&KB or novels.

Personally I would love to read that stuff so I hope he doesnt get canned. Are sales the problem? Does anyone have any numbers? He isnt nearly as good as Steve but its always a joy to read new material set in the Malazverse!

I don't think the recent ICE covers necessarily show publisher inattentiveness. What I think Bantam's trying to do is tie ICE's books in more with SE's "one guy standing around" Steve Stone cover theme. Look at DoD and TCG and tell me OST and B&B don't fit right in, crappy execution aside. They're just shooting for a cohesive brand. (One I've never been a fan of, but still...)
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Wow. I never had much liking for the Malazan covers (Deadhouse Gates by every publisher and The Crippled God were okay, the rest was mediocre at best), but this one takes generic to a whole new level. Level called "generic shit". Awful, simply awful. Can't say if it's relevant, because I am totally out of touch with Cam's writing - I finished on Return of the Crimson Guard.

The one and only cover as bad as this one in the Malazan series was the polish edition of Night of Knives. Enjoy:

It was such a shame to read that in public places.

I know that's their purpose... but I much preferred the theme that ICE's covers had before. :)
Laseen did nothing wrong.

I demand Telorast & Curdle plushies.
