As far as I recall, while Ghost Story was a return to strength from Changes which I did not like, the latest book also left me a little cold. It felt too safe and it didn't really do much in terms of setting up the future books.

It broke Harry away from most of his supporting cast and set him up in an entirely new status quo. How is that not set-up?

I found Ghost Story to be a bit of a slower read than the other Dresden Files books, but I also think that was kind of necessary after Changes. I see it as the beginning of a new start for Harry and I also think know that COLD DAYS will be beyond awesome ;) Partly because CHAPTER 3 was all kinds of awesome: http://www.jim-butch...-days-chapter-3

Agreed on all points, esp re CD ch3. Which everyone here should go read. Immediately.

Ghost Story rubbed me the wrong way. I thought it was pretty awesome to start with, but it irritated me when almost everything from the blurb eventually turned out to be false: "Oh, I'm not actually a ghost; oh look, I can actually use my magic if I try hard enough," Molly's craziness might have just been an act, etc. (I don't remember many of the details.) It seemed like after starting out as such a daring departure from the rest of the series, it too quickly reverted back to the status quo (new boss notwithstanding.)

It required Harry to learn patience, to accept his limits and to let go of most of what he held important. It challenged him in a way wholly different from CHANGES. I thought it worked on those levels.

Again, it's been a while since I read it and my memory is vague. I think I was annoyed that the story didn't have a wider scope other than a wizard ghost eating other ghosts. I wanted more information on the fish people I think. I think that angle should have been fleshed out more.

On the other hand as I think on the book more I remember the lesson the angel wanted to teach Dresden. About the repercussions of his actions and how his hot headed attitude and lack of attention to the big picture hurt the people around him. That was an important moment in Dresdens character development I think.

That fish people stuff, which is quasi-related to the Apocalypse, is coming up as a main event later. Maybe two books after Cold Days. Every fifth book is the Denarians, so the next book (the fifteenth) will have Nicodemus & Co. in it.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Is this a Word of Jim, or are you just going off the pattern so far? I'd like to see the Denarians more often, personally. Especially now that the Red Court is out.

Actually, Blend picked up this pattern in his Dresdencrack thread and showed me how it's been confirmed elsewhere. Give all credit to him.

The fish people (I love this absurdly reductionist title for Formorians) have featured in a couple short stories now (Murph's Aftermath and Marcone's Even Hand). They are very obviously being prepared for an entrance into the main series as Big Bads, but their entrance will come as part of the Apocalypse set-up that Aptorius wants.

We are only denying ourselves Chapter 1. In order to get to Ch.s 2 and 3, we'd have to go through Ch.1. So we're only denying ourselves one chapter, really.

If denying is even what we're doing. For me, at least, I'm savouring the anticipation. I don't need meagre dribbles of my chosen high in order to keep my interest at its zenith.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

I now have A Red Country, so it's not even like I'm denying myself anything.

To my fellow hold outs:

Quote

“You all know the mission, and what is at stake.
I have come to trust each of you with my life -- but I have also heard murmurs of discontent. I share your concerns.
We are trained for espionage; we would be legends, but the records are sealed. Glory in battle is not our way.
Think of our heroes; the Silent Step, who defeated a nation with a single shot. Or the Ever Alert, who kept armies at bay with hidden facts.
These giants do not seem to give us solace here, but they are not all that we are.
Before the network, there was the fleet. Before diplomacy, there were soldiers!
Our influence stopped the rachni, but before that we held the line!
Our influence stopped the krogan, but before that, we held the line!
Our influence will stop Saren; in the battle today, we will hold the line!

+++++++++++++++++++++Dresdencrack Logs+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Day 479 since Ghost Story........

Salvation approaches. Our time draws ever nearer.

One almighty surge of Dresedencrack to see us through the next long, cold wait.

Pressure remains, from the weak willed, the enfeebled, those who gave in already. Their whispered temptations bespeak their own nature. They wish to have stayed true, as we have.

They failed. Their flaws are NOT ours.

We who stayed strong KNOW our time is coming.

Soon, the glorious day will dawn.......

And it will be magnificent

I'm holding out also, mainly because I had no idea that there was an alternative. I guess I'll continue to hold out since I'm a stubborn bastard.

Y'know, the fact that it's hitting the street means all you 'don't read the promos' people are really just delaying the inevitable at this point.

I mean, you would effectively be reading what you're going to be reading any day now anyways.
