I am so legitimately happy over this.

Jim Butcher, I don't know if you read this forum, but I thank you for putting together the latest installment of the most exciting series in literature right now.

If you do read this forum, know that if we're ever in the same town (as in you're in a place for a convention and I'm there for whatever other reasons), I'll pick up a private BJJ lesson for you with the instructor of your choice. I figure it's better than offering to pay for a bar tab and you'd get more out of it. San Diego is a particularly nice place for that, as you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a BJJ/MMA gym there.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Amphi, you don't want to know how thoroughly i misunderstood this post.

Only the use of the acronym 'MMA' caused me to re-consider my decision that you were Butcher's bestest fan ever and/or a pervert.

Does it help or hinder understanding if I say that they often cost the same as what you're thinking of?

Early reviews (by me, though I haven't read it) are saying this book is awesome!
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

IMNSHO yes.

Urban fantasy set in London. Lead character Peter Grant is a newbie cop who ends up on the 'special cases' unit. It's first person narration and i enjoy the 'voice' Aaronovitch gives him. Reminds me of Stross' LAUNDRY series' Bob Howard, a guy who is out of his depth but competent and trying not to take things too seriously even if they are.

Has some fun and novel takes on magic, good characters, a level of wit that isn't quite Dresden but works nicely, and while not as high octane as Dresden, does have a nice level of action, higher than say Carey's Felix Castor (and not as dark altho it treads close at times...).

I liked the first one - MIDNIGHT RIOT, i similarly liked the second - MOON OVER SOHO - and i'm really enjoying the third.

In particular i'm enjoyng how the supporting cast is becoming familiar and playing a bigger part in the story as a result.

I also enjoy Aaronovitch's tendency to work in an art form with its London perculiarities into the story.... RIOT had theater, MOON had music, and it looks like WHISPERS UNDERGROUND is getting into pottery... and as odd as that sounds he makes it work.

To keep us on topic, i think these books are a great methadone between dresdencrack fixes.

Butcher just tweeted this:

"Sample chapters from COLD DAYS out today with GHOST STORY paperback! And ow! My back! I'm not supposed to get knives in my back!"

Fuck. This is going to test my "No Sample Chapters reading" mettle....

MUST. RESIST.

oh fuck me i'm a disaster at resisting these....

It's amazing.... when it comes to things Malazan i can avoid samples and spoilers no problem.... and this is knowing there is 700 or so pages coming my way... but post one chapter from a typically short dresdencrack fix and i'm all twitchy like a junky on the first of the month....

Thanks, think I will eventually get around to reading them, just one more series to the 'must-read-mountain!'
