Hmm, what 16-17 at the time was my interpretation. Seems OK, agewise.

Spoilers.............

I can't lie and act like I didn't devour every word RSB wrote after about the first hundred pages. However..............Here are somethings I found disturbing:

Frequent descriptions of an army nude from the waist down sitting in their own Diarehia.

Achamain getting felt up by an infected whore.

Describing Kellhus tied to a dead Serwe with is genitals flopping on her dead ones.

Mentioning Esmenet saw Serwe's dead genitals.

Cnair humping a hole in the ground.

Sarcellus getting an erection during combat.

Achamain taking his morning apocolypse to the next level and emptying himself suspended in the Scarlet Spires den.

Dark Lord Clam Head raping and killing an entire family in front of each other.

Slaughtering your own camp followers.

I know I have left alot that is disturbing out. I dig RSB's work but goooooooooooooodness it is gritty. And BTW not that we have to have a hero but if there was one who would it be????? Proyas? Kellhus? Achamain? Esmenet? Who knows.................

I wonder what Bakker imagines the Prince of Nothing is doing right now...

Something subtle and conniving.

I'm not sure I understand his ultimate goal. Is he just trying to kill dad? What happens after that? Does he go back home and be a monk?

Just finished reading tDtCB, and I must say that I was suitably impressed. Bakker is a very polished author with a strong eye for detail and has some created some intriguing characters and strong plot, especially the political side.

Just a few things:
-The Chorae bugged the hell out of me. I realise that the magic and its power must be balanced, but this is such a trite way of doing it.
-Just like SE, his characters tendency to ramble about philosophy inside their heads is a bit dragging at times. Show, don't tell, chaps.
-The homosexual references. I hate being beaten over the head with anything.
-The ending did nothing for me, really. SE's endings are always good because something's always being resolved, but nothing was resolved here.

Is there anything in the way of other races? What about the character's abilities?

"And those that endure in Middle-earth and come not to Mandos shall grow weary of the world as with a great burden, and shall wane, and become as shadows of regret before the younger race that cometh after."

I finally got it - damned Amazon.ca made me pay a lot of money for it, but it can't be helped – and I must say it is quite good. It reminds me of Guy Gavriel Kay, because it is closely based on RL history - The First Crusade in this case – but unlike Kay it has a lot of magic which I like. I will certainly be buying next volumes, high price notwithstanding.

Well that's something the Canadians will be happy with, out on April 12th there and release date here could be next year. I've ordered it through my friendly local bookshop but god knows when it will get here.

I don't see why they even put the mass market paperback edition on this list when the trade paperback/hardcover was on it last year. It is still the same book.

Well they simply do so because of the votes. I've checked the results of all the years and it's very rare for a book to be in the top 10 in it's opening year and be in again the next, or be even in the recommended reading section again. But HoC was still so popular that it was still worth a mention. Happened to Vandermeer's City of Saints and Madmen as well.

Great about Bakker btw.

How many Elric books did you read, BTW? Because the series doesn't get good until around book 6, the first full novel(IMO).

'"Simplifying matters." Oh wait til I tell him that one. Hey Rallick, you're not a man who kills people, you're a man who simplifies.'

Bugger. I was looking forward to this second book.
Still, might keep it now for reading on holiday. I read book 1 in Spain. Maybe I'll make a tradition of this.

Anyone else think Bakker is a bit too grahic with things? Really seem parts of the novels just made me cringe.

Interesting. But it's only the first book, so the wait for number two would still be several months following that release. And of course, the Canadian editions are far more striking than the mass market paperbacks from S&S (f.k.a. Earthlight).

Thou shallt not complain, as there is still not even word of a UK version.

I mailed Earthlight, but of course they failed to reply.

Excellent book. Thanks for the recommendation.

Here are a couple of Amazon.ca coupons for anyone contemplating buying this book. It could help on the shipping costs but you may have to top up the order to reach the minimum amount.

1) CANADASKY535 - $5 OFF $35 (Expires August 31, new customers only)
2) MAPSHAWSPEED - $5 OFF $30 (Expires June 30)

Picked it up a few days ago (girlfriend bought it for me Posted Image ) and it does seem promising although I agree that the writing style is very formal and dry, which makes for a slow read. But there are some original concepts ( a rarity in the fantasy genre ). I hoping that this book delivers something special...

Hey that's great! Where did you hear about the US release? Nothing on Locus, nothing on the authors site, nothing on Penguin's US site. I was able to confirm it via one of my distributors though.

It's $25.95 hardcover edition.
