There's a couple nice reader reviews on Amazon.ca:

This thread was falling a little too close to page 2.

He's graphic, but IMO it's not gratuitous. What I mean is I don't think he's doing it JUST to be shocking or gross...
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Here's hoping that Bakker gets a U.S. publishing deal soon, just like Erikson did.

Earthlight was the best he could do? For all the praise he is getting i'd have thought he could atleast got a good name publisher. I tend to avoid Earthlight books as there author quality isnt that great.

Just to compare I paid $27.82 after taxes in Canadian dollars and I purchased it at my local Chapters bookstore. So you are paying 8CD for shipping... not too bad. I paid about $8 when I ordered HoC and MoI from amazon.co.uk.

After reading the posts here I thought this sounded like a great book and that I should carry it in my store. I'm still waiting to hear back from the publisher almost a week later. Time to call them back and find out what the problem is. This doesn't look like it's going to be easy to get!

Word on the street... or rather on the publisher's website
is that the second volume will be released in April 2004 and the third and final volume April 2005. The titles are there too but I can't recall them at the moment. www.penguin.ca

quote:-Just like SE, his characters tendency to ramble about philosophy inside their heads is a bit dragging at times. Show, don't tell, chaps.
I actually tend to enjoy SE's philosophy, I wouldn't even compare the Philosophy in the two novels. Bakker does a lot of "telling" where as Erikson does mostly "showing" atleast how I saw it. Bakker at some point in tDtCB DOES drag on. Especially early on in the novel.
quote:-The ending did nothing for me, really. SE's endings are always good because something's always being resolved, but nothing was resolved here.
Felt exactly the same way. Could've accomplished the ending a lot better. But nevertheless amazing novel.

January 2006, probably. Was scheduled for October 2005, but like Erikson's book, this one is also delayed.
January for the Canadian and U.S. release (which means hunting down the Overlook hardcovers as I prefer HC to my Canadian tpbk) and May for the U.K. release.

Well, my long ordeal in trying to obtain copies of this book is at end. Wasn't able to get many, but I'm very pleased that it's finally here. Just bumped another book off the top of the "to read" pile.

Welcome to the Forum Chris
SPOILERS!!!!!!!!
So, what did people think of the ending? I was sort of let down because i thought they would start marching, but it was brilliant anyway, and leaves you wanting more. I want to see Anasurimbor take over everything!
And also, who do you think Moenghus is? There are two theories on the ASoIaF board, one that Moenghus is Maithenet (his amazing charisma) and one that Moenghus is Mahanet (i think that was his name. The Cishaurim(sp?) sorcerer.) because Cnaiur mentions that Moeghus gave himself the swazond and it mentions Mahanet having scarred arms.

According to LOCUS he sold it to Earthlight but I just heard that Earthlight has been closed by it's parent company Simon & Schuster. They are claiming that all contracts will now be honored via Pocket Books. It had been scheduled for a Feb. release, but who knows now.

Well I don't want to give too much away but the main race is the humans but there are a few other races that have been mentioned so far. As for abilities there are Schools that are made up of sorcerors and these Schools are very powerful and have a lot of influence in the region they are located. Also, there is an order of monk-like people that have a unique ability with the way they can talk and persuade people. Also they have extremely agile reflexes. Other than that the majority of the first 240 pages has been court intrigue and some nice grisly war!

TDTCB comes out March 1st in the UK and June 1st in the US. TWP comes out May 20 in Canada, and November 1 in the UK, and, tentatively, June 1 2005 in the US. Book Three, The Thousandfold Thought, comes out April 21 2005 in Canada and the UK (Simon & Schuster UK has accelerated their release schedule to harmonize with Penguin Canada's - which I think UK readers will much appreciate).

Hey there, thanks for the plug. Couldn't help but import a few copies after everything that was said here. Very glad I did too. It's a great book.
Last I heard there still wasn't a deal with a US publisher, but it will be published in England.
