My 2 cents, the book is great so far. Really good writing, careful and crafty and very deliberate. And the maps in the appendix...can anyone say Beleriand? Drawn by the author himself, beautiful.

Right, so what I meant was I kept feeling that Bakker was continually bringing up Moenghus and Cnaiur's physical relationship, or that of Paru and Achamian when it served little purpose. Tell the reader once, so they understand complexities that underpin the relationships rather bringing it up again and again. Read it, got it, move on...don't need to be told of it three different times from three different viewpoints or three different characters.

Posted Image Yes, it has rough-cut edges. I guess it's supposed to look stylish. I like the rough-cut trade paperbacks, but some people don't. China Mieville's books are also rough-cut trade paperbacks. I think they use this format for books they are trying to market as more "upscale" fantasy novels.

I can't remember an exact figure, soth, but it was about £8 in British money. Still not read it, though. Saving it for my holiday.

I haven't finished the Warrior-Prophet yet but it seems clear to me that the shame of whatever happened between Moenghus and Big C is what feuls his rage and it looks to be a nasty comb of a homosexual trist and Patricide.

I am sure I am missing something but it eludes me.

Well, how did Cnaiur "betray" the Scylvendi? By being controlled by Moengus, and then by his anger (and shame) that sprang from this controlled him, and then Kellus again dominated him. And as far as he saw, (and acted towards his tribesmen) he was controlled, and submissive in some aspect (such as his wife being emotionally stronger than he, who was supposed to be superior to any woman in any way) But with Serwe, he finally found someone he (believed) could actually control both physically and emotionally, and so take his rightful place as far as his people saw it. But when he lost her, everyone was laughing at him again.

That sounded so much better before I typed it out. Ah well.

I actually tend to enjoy SE's philosophy, I wouldn't even compare the Philosophy in the two novels. Bakker does a lot of "telling" where as Erikson does mostly "showing" atleast how I saw it. Bakker at some point in tDtCB DOES drag on. Especially early on in the novel.

Yeah, SE started off like that but in his newer novels, especially in MT I felt there was a bit too much philosophizing being 'told' to us. Agree that Bakker is probably the closest thing to SE out there, just not as good imho.

I haven't read this (yet another book I haven't read...How I hate those unread books!)

But the rave reviews have certainly whetted my appetite for the UK release. As I'm incapable of keeping my opinions to myself, you'll have my view then.

SuperFly TNT!
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants.
