*sighs* it seems that everything I am anticipating keeps getting delayed. Halo 2 got knocked from April to June to "autumn" not to mention Erikson, Martin and now this. Frustrating...

Thanks, Rodeo. Actually, yesterday was the first time I've stopped by in a while and I just wanted to see if there were any new and recommended books in this forum and alas I am reading a new book now. 60 pages into it so far and I am enjoying it a lot. As with most complex fantasy novels it takes a little while to get into with all the names flying at you and the history but I think Bakker is pulling it off admirably.

uhhh ... i thought SE stayed away from reading other fantasy books / authors so as to not influence writing his own ? wasn't that in the Q & A somehwere ?

First immpressions:

Excellent stuff. Challenging, though. It is written in a very dry style, almost formal, that took me a bit to get used to.

Reminescent of SE, and I mean that in a good way. The world Bakker created is absolutely huge, and he drops you in the middle of it, leaving you to fend for yourself. I think I looked at the glossary more times than I did with SE trying to place the Schools and races of men in my head.

Nice list clarke apart from the fact I don't have any interest in reading those authors.

I tried Kay and enjoyed the book I read but have not bothered to try another one and the only Moorcock books I liked were the "Corum" ones and bits of the Elric.

Judging books and authors by the publisher is just something I do. It rarely lets me down.

It just arrived at my door today, all the way from Canada. Is it supposed to look so rough cut?

I didn't have time to go back through the whole thread to look for it... I was too busy Posted Imageing in the Phoenix Inn! Posted Image Err... I mean... *cough* Posted Image
May huh? Good. That gives me time to reread MBOTF, including BH, and then read RSB series in time for the third book to come out. And by that time the next GRRM book should be nearly finished! Posted Image

Well, I picked this sucker up on the weekend. I'm about 80 pages into it. Good stuff so far. Tis a bit confusing, I'll admit. I constantly have to refer to the appendices to figure out what's going on but I think I'm starting to get a hang of all the factions and stuff. It didn't grab me the same way SE did but very few books do! Posted Image

As usual I have to import the book if I want it in a hurry otherwise I will have to patiently await its arrival in our book stores here in South Africa...oh well, patience is a virtue.

Im currently about 100 pages in and it seems to be setting itself up nicely. Will have to see how the rest pans out but if it holds up to the promise will have to get the other novels when they're out.

You should check out the msg board linked to earlier in this thread. Bakker seems to be on it every day answering questions. Pretty down to earth guy and it is interesting hearing about his experience with publishers and how his book got written, etc.
