Ohhhhhhhh that would explain that. That actress -- Nathalie Emmanuel -- is way older than the Missandei in the books though (who is 10). Also, she is seriously beautiful.

No, she's the later handmaiden from Astapor who has brothers among the Unsullied.

In the books, Doreah (Dany's handmaiden, a slave of the Dothraki but not Dothraki herself) died in the Red Waste at the start of ACoK. In the TV series she's the one who betrayed Dany and was locked in the vault at the end of Season 2. She's also played by an ex-HOLLYOAKS actress, to create maximum confusion (Roxanne McGee).

Then there's Irri, Dany's actual Dothraki handmaiden, who in the books is still alive as of the end of ADWD but in the TV series died for no particular reason in Season 2. She was played by Amrita Amcharia (who has never been in HOLLYOAKS).

Now there's Missandei, a slave in Astapor in Slaver's Bay who translates a business deal between Dany and the slave-masters of the city.

...and was SHE ever on HOLLYOAKS?

Didn't she and Dany have a lesbian scene in ASoS? A brief one but still.

...

Just remembered Cersei had a lesbian scene in AFfC ....wonder if we get to see it (probably not). Sigh.

Spoilers for season 3 and 4!!!!!

I just watched the trailer, anyways, were those supposed to be the unsullied with dany in the desert or one of the merc company's? I thought that the unsullied had huge bronze cone helms?

And why is prince Oberyn not in this season? Iirc the dornish arrive at kl in time for the wedding, which I guess does happen after the party at the twins....... So nvm I can see how they're ginna do it.

Stoked for the Reeds and the Brienne/Jaime bonding, stoked to see arya pwn the tickler and pollivar.........wait a sec, I don't think Gregors cronies were in the show? And Tywin was at Harrenhall too wtf

Regardless, can't wait for this 8D

Minimally related to preceding posts, this quote from Benioff and Weiss pretty much sums up my feelings about deviations from the text.

Quote

We're under no contractual restrictions with regards to the storytelling. It's just that we pursued these books—and pushed for the show's green-light—for almost four years before we got to shoot the pilot. We gave up other opportunities because we love these books and want to do them justice. So for us, it's about adapting the books according to our notions of justice—which won't mesh with the fundamentalist book fans' notions. Which is fine with us because if the fundamentalists were running the show, there wouldn't be a show.

I agree for the most part. However, there is a key weakness of Benioff and Weiss not being long-term fans of the show (they were sent the books specifically to develop as an adaptation) in that they have bungled several key scenes and important thematic moments for the book readers. I think there's a difference between trying to put the books in every detail on the screen (which would indeed be fatal and impractical) and sometimes making changes for the sake of making changes. For example, losing the latter part of the Qhorin/Jon relationship and then bungling the final swordfight purely so they can have Ygritte and Jon Snow running around in circles in the snow for three episodes instead was simply a huge mistake. I can see their logic - they need to set up Ygritte better because they won't have time to in Season 3 - but it robs the story of a really powerful moment. This is even more frustrating as the guy they got to play Qhorin - Simon Armstrong - was really good and would have killed the scenes if they'd been written more similarly to the books.

OTOH, they had to change the Blackwater for money-based reasons and, though it was a shame not to have the naval battle and the chain, it was frankly worth it for some of the new stuff they did include, most notably Stannis's completely badass, leading-from-the-front naval assault on the city. Dude had some guy's skull explode in his face and shrugged it off to keep fighting. They managed to tell us a lot about Stannis and why people do fight for him despite his complete lack of charisma in those scenes, which were all new.

On a more balanced note, I think it was a shame and possibly a long-term mistake to lose the House of the Undying scenes from the books, especially the Rhaegar/Lyanna stuff (that one scene sets up plotlines that don't come to fruition until ADWD, and does so quite well). However, the new scenes we got were quite powerful, such as the shattered throne room and seeing Drogo again. It was really good stuff, it just felt a shame we had to drop other really good stuff from the books to get them.

Oh man I totally forgot about the House of the Undying.........

Remember the first time you saw The Fellowship Of the Ring, and it opened to that insanely epic flashback of the battle on Mt Doom? And you thought "holy fuck they are gonna nail these movies!",
I wish GoT had a similar flashback to the battle of the trident, theres this huge mythos surrounding Rhaegar and the Targeryans, building and building through the series, and I think its very important to the story......But for non-readers too much back-story and lore would become too confusing. I would like to see some flashbacks all the same 8D

The lore and recent history is included in the season 1 dvd extras. I do agree if they are gonna include this stuff plot-wise they need to start seeding it pretty quick.

Hmm, good question. It's definitely not up through book five (and it's not meant as spoilery stuff), but they do cover a bunch of the old Heroes of the First Men, it covers the Children of the Forest and the waves of newcomers to Westeros (including Aegon I and the dragons)...and some of the various religions...and lots of stuff concerning Robert's Rebellion. A lot of it takes the form of history lessons between Luwin and Bran, or remembrances from various other involved parties (the actors narrate animations in-character). My take on it is that they likely will not film flashbacks, but I could be wrong. We did see some simpler narrative tricks already, like Bran's visions and Sansa's dream. And did we get any wolves-eye-view scenes? I forget. I'm gonna rewatch season 2 pretty soon and if there's anything interesting in the new extra features I'll report back (unless someone else wants to).

There are definitely some wolf's-eye-view dreams in the show, though the three-eyed crow has yet to utter a word. Not as difficult a tie-in down the road, since at least the three-eyed crow shows up (unlike the Rhaegar visions etc.) Plus with the Reeds showing up that whole angle of Bran's character is almost sure to get fleshed out a bit more.

Those extras are easily my favorite thing about the DVDs so far. The girlfriend isn't a book reader but loves the show, and she was enthralled by them.

Still, extras on a DVD do not foundational plot points make, and I agree they're going to have to shed more light on what's come before in some way if the later seasons are going to make a lick of sense at all. So much of the story is all about characters dealing with the fallout of the choices and actions of the old guard (Robert, Ned, Rhaegar, Tywin, Arryn, Hoster, etc etc etc) that it's just unavoidable.

I don't think so. Part of the beauty of the show is they don't try to hit the sheer volume of history GRRM incorporates into the books.
They've done a nice job so far of not overloading the viewers with six generations of Aegons, Aegars and Aenaeonaelse without sacrificing story coherence.
