Finally finished reading game of thrones, and I was'nt impressed. It was a good book but nothing special. Don't understand how you can think that Martin is better than Erikson Posted Image
Perhaps I change my mind when I've read the other books....but I doubt it.

What i dont like about ASOIAF is how the chapters are just called the names of the PoVs. Like "Bran" or "Eddard". Cant he think of better chapter headings, or just leave them with no chapter headings? It makes it sound really tacky...Posted Image

Thats not really what i meant. I dont mind having one all the main characters with seperate PoVs, and all in different places, but i wish that he wouldn't use their names as the chapter titles...

she's the most annoying character in the books, followed by Joeffrey... I just can't stand all that lucrative life style, like "oh, I'm going to marry the prince, oh, how great!" makes me massively pissed off... I'd chop her head off if I could...
but I liked Arya...

It's a bit of a circular problem, isn't it? The author must write books to be popular. The author must promote the books he writes. The author cannot write while promoting, and cannot promote while writing.

Of course, one could argue that if they just stopped *&?$ing about and just wrote the damn books properly, there wouldn't need to be all thistime spent promoting. But we can't blame a successful author for wanting to enjoy their success.

Striking the balance has to be tough, and the more popular the writer, the tougher the balance. Unless of course you're Goodkind, as mentioned previously. Excuse me while i bleed from my eyes now.

I gave GRRM another try recently, but again found him wanting as a fantasy when compared to Erikson, and in some respects even to Jordan. i just cannot connect on an emotional level to Martin's character- i don't care what happens to them as to me they just don't come alive.

Admittedly, technically his world and scope are great and are to be admired and i hope his future work doesn't disappoint loyal readers like Jordan did. In fact, his book about vampires in the deep South ("Fevre Dream") was brilliant and if he just wrote like that than his fantasy would rank amongst the highest to me.

We know he had to restart writing AFfC. Although I am not sure if book 5 is already written, I am pretty sure that the plotline for the book has been worked out.

So there was a setting he had to get to. That should be harder than writing any other book in the series. Posted Image

No Caldazar, it's his 'recent pace'! How dare you question GRRM! Infidel!!! May your gonads swell to the size a hardcover Storm of Swords book (both parts!!!)! Of course this phenomenon would probably happen over 4+ years, having restarted after one year for ambiguous reasons, since it was never part of your original development in the first place but needed to occur to give your development "better flow". Yes! Exactly so!

Sorry, been hanging around that board a little too much recently. It's all optimistic, and honestly it all honestly sounds like the words that were bandied around before RJJ's last two books.

Ive read the second anti-Erikson topic and I must say that it's just their fault if they don't read carefully. I'm not going to register there just to say that. But someone could quote me. Let them read ALL the books CAREFULLY.

I just read a game of thrones. I wasn't very impressed with it - no way is it better than MBotF series. The characters are all too depressing. When looking up Murphy's Law in the dictionary there will be a picture of Ned Stark next to it. I agree with Falco's comments and whoever said that the POV's change too often - there's very little flow in the writing, and it jumps everywhere. The only characters I really liked were Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister. Sure it's got a large scope, but you never get to "sock it in", and half the time you think the characters are complete morons instead of sympathising with them.

People say that it's better to have no completely evil characters, then what about the Others? Say what you will, but Eye of the World was a lot better, since it pulled you into the fantasy, and there was plenty of struggles and suspence, but there was hope, victory and laughter too. What I noticed at the end was that the only people who made jokes were the black recruits and Tyrion (the king did too, but never in actual conversation).

Although there were some good storylines, I'm in no particular hurry to reach for the next book.

I take some small comfort in the fact that as I am younger than SE, RJ and GRRM, I will either live to see their series' end, or at least outlive them!

The thing that annoys me about a lot of Martin fans (note: not all of them) is that they jumped off the Jordan bandwagon after aGoT came out and claimed how Martin was so much better because his series had direction, etc, etc. Yet they were saying all this when only the first book was released and now look at the state of the series. The first three books have been excellent but where is this sense of direction that Martin had? The series is now seven books instead of the "six books, definately no more than that" approach at the beginning, not to mention the four year delay.

Many people justify this delay by saying "take as long as you like to write a quality novel..." but if Martin doesn't deliver on this next one what will the excuses be?

Toy knights and medieval miniatures, that is. Like all red-blooded American boys, I had a Marx castle and some plastic toy knights as a kid, watched Robin Hood and Sir Lancelot on television, and went to the movies to see Ivanhoe (the MGM version with Elizabeth Taylor and George Sanders is still the best) and Prince Valiant. Eventually, sad to say, I got older, and my toy knights and Marx tin litho castle went the way of all toys... but in 1996, deep in the throes of writing my fantasy series, my old passions reawakened, and I started buying toy knights once again.

I collect the 54mm scale, the so-called "toy soldier" scale, and sometimes go up to 70mm for the exquisite Elastolin plastics. These days 25mm wargaming figures are far more common, but they're too small for my taste... and I've seldom seen any that can compare to the exquisite sculpting and fine detail of one of the better 54mm figures. "

I haven't really gotten into the series that well. It's a fairly interesting story, but I think the amount of sex in book 2 has thrown me off.

That or I'm just exhausted from reading three of erikson's before this series.

Am i the only one who was a problem with the volume of sex stuff in these books?
I don't recall reading too much in book one. Or any in fact.

Umm but Martin is still "milking" his current fans as you say RJ is as if they want to read it early they have to buy the mag. It's a double standard imo. Why would normal readers of the mag read a prologue to book four in a series? They would not understand what's happening and it would contain a spoiler unless ofcourse the prologue has no connection at all to the main story.

Feels weird that I'm here defending Martin, and I'm defending Erikson on the Asoaif board.
And people have much the same complaints about both authors on both boards.
