An update from GRRM's site www.georgerrmartin.com/ :
I write this the day after the presidential election.

A FEAST FOR CROWS is still not finished. Yes, I have written some more pages since the June update. No, the book is not yet done. My August and September schedule was full of conventions, travel, and speaking appearances, which cut deeply into my writing time during those months. Yes, I could have made more progress on the book if I had stayed at home chained to the desk, but I make these commitments years in advance and I take them very seriously.

Also, some of the writing that I have done since June has actually been rewriting. My goal, as I have said repeatedly in these updates, has always been to produce a book that is a good as it can be, so when I suddenly realize that one of my story threads can be made much more powerful and dramatic with some restructuring, I restructure... even if that means going back, tearing up finished chapters, and reworking them from start to finish.

That's done, anyway. A FEAST FOR CROWS will be much better for it, and now I am back at work on new chapters once again... although not today, and maybe not tomorrow, or next week. I am pretty good with words, usually, but no words can express how miserable, angry, and depressed I am feeling this morning over the results of yesterday's election. The exit polling makes it clear: this was a victory for bigotry and fear, a mandate bought with lies. I know from past experience that it is going to take me some time to shake off this depression.

Losing myself in the world of Westeros would probably be the best medicine for what ails me just now, I know full well. There is solace in work, and books -- my own books, and those of others -- have always been a refuge for me during dark times in my life. Today, however, the {fictional} travails of my {fictional} Seven Kingdoms seem pretty unimportant compared to the very real woes that the United States is facing, a future of war and isolation abroad, and division and repression at home.

Winter is coming to Westeros, but it has already come to America.

OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

So he's discredited if he does find them believable and discredited if he doesn't?

And here is where the difference is. Erikson manages to deliver by the deadline, GRRM seems to keep finding excuses to delay. The last delay from Erikson wasnt his fault, the publishers delayed for error checking to make it the best it could be.

Maybe he's really dead and the whole thing is a massive sham in order to keep book sales high. Posted Image

It's one thing to turn in Lord of the Rings into the publisher, but when a book is serial in nature the way that ASOIAF is, no one in their right mind would write that as spec and turn it in when done. You all are comparing apples and oranges. You have to compare Martin to all the other authors who write serials, many of whom take a long ass time. Even in the best case scenarios you still would have to read a series for over a decade...deal with it, and deal with it somewhere else.

Anyway, I really like the way Martin has tried to expand the marketing on his series by allowing artists to sell commercial pictures and what not. I kind of hope Erikson will follow suit.

"Still the forum is so big it's almost getting out of hand with less than a handful of moderators and something like 3000+ members, so I've seen some uncalled for nastiness towards newbies."

@ Lyanna Stark
I've been to that forum a couple of times but I believe it's too big. There are some nice treads on that forum but most are crap or come back every two/three months in a new form. Probably because they have nothing new to talk about for about four years.... Posted Image

"FOUND SOMETHING NEW: R+J=L!!!!" Yep, read that a lot of times... Posted Image

The only theory I could think of and never read is that Jaqen H'ghar = Daario Naharis (both are I believe Faceless Men)
Proof:
His long straight hair of red and white turns to a dark cap of curls, his cheeks grow fuller, his nose hooks, a scar appears on his cheek, and a gold tooth appears in his mouth. His manner of speaking changes as well. (II: 505)

This descriptions matches the one of Daario Naharis in the beginning of ASOS part 2 "curly hair that fell to his collar." "A golden tooth gleamed in his mouth when he smiled" "there was something in his hard blue eyes and great curving nose." Somewhere I've also read that he has a scar.

Could be a funny theory: Silvio Forel = Jaqen H'ghar = Daario Naharis = ???
There is a Faceless Man in the vicinity of each queen or king. Makes the killing easier....

I have been amazed by how much people have complained about how long a Feat for Crows is taking. Martin is a master storyteller. Waiting for his books hurt, just like Eriksons. But this is a good thing. Patience is a virtue. Having everything you want and nothing to "want" may result in something less then happiness. Finally, I must note that however long we wait, there are always other great things to read.

Well, i merely said it was interesting and given that you managed to write two rather big posts to refute some of the stuff he said proves that i'd say.

As i said initially, i dont agree with much of what he says myself. But it does make one think.

Reading the various comments about Martins progress on several boards casts a rather interesting light upon the attitude of part of the reading population. That attitude is defined by one trait in particular: reading an author's books is not a privilege, no, it is a right. Therefore people seem to think an author is suddenly worthless if they have to wait longer for the next book than they wished for. Pathetic.

Is 800k for the whole series or just Storm of Swords? I wouldn't be surprised if it's the whole series because he's still obscure compared to Goodkind, Brooks, and Jordan.

As far as King goes, since 1980 he has written somewhere around 50 novels, plus hundreds of short stories and many screenplays, so that is a high production rate.

You don't have to take my word for it by I wholeheartidly believe that the most frustrated person about the delay is GRRM himself.

"Other writers have finished whole trilogies while I've been working on number four."

"Giant megaseries are harder for me. Especially the fourth volume... "

The most easy thing for him to do is to write "The End" to wherever he got and publish what he has written, after all, we lose patience with each month that passes without AFfC he loses tens of thousands of dollars.

He does not do that because he wants to give us his best. As much as I am tired of waiting, I respect him for that.

I hope it did not come out like I am a rabid fanboy defending him.

In an way, I feel sorry for Martin because he can't win now, and I reckon, like Warhammer says, he just screwed up. Perhaps we all expect him to be as organised and ridiculously long-sighted as SE (who seemed to know in DG where the story was going in book ten Posted Image) but I think ideas have caught him up (iirc, he never planned for AFfC did he?)
NOW he has the problem that everyone has waited so long that the dissappointment, even if it is the best book ever written, is almost inevitable - "We waited five years for THAT!" oh dear.
Oh well, moaning won't make him go any faster so I guess I will just wait...Rodeo! Hold off on those squirrel assassins...yeah, the sorrowful squirrels...
Victory is mine!

But then Dujek. How many books have Barbara Cartland released in 10 years? 1000?

Would you consider them worthy of purchse? Posted Image

Not that Erikson has anything in common with Cartland but I don't volume says anything about the quality of an author.

Arthur C. Clarke doesnt release that much but when he does it's quallity. Or what about Donaldson? He sure takes his time but you know it will at least be worth reading once.

By the looks of things, Martin's SHADOW TWIN (with Dozios and Abraham) might be published before Feast. At least we'll have something!

Most likely someone misinterpreted Mr. Martin's words. He takes great care to say things precisely and represent situations accurately.
