Wow. Abyss, man, post a reply here so you can collect your rep. Holy crap, man.

Never mind. I hadn't seen his post yet here.

Tnx - it's amazing what a lack of sleep can trigger.
It was actually fun to write. Bast is not very developed in Rothfuss' books (deliberately, i'm certain) so making him a semi-credible opponent against Rake was challenging.

Cheers for doing that write up 'Byss. The original one was so irritating. Much as i love Rothfuss' books thus far, the power levels as so wildly askew that making the fight interesting would be difficult. And you managed to pull that off. Kudos.

And whether it is coincidental or not, the voting numbers seemed to have spiked for Rake after your posting.

I'm still so disappointed that we couldn't have had

Caine vs Rake showdown. Fancy trying that?

Shoot, I'm tempted to give that a go. Maybe this weekend...

Heh... you give me too much credit but its a kick to think i even shifted a couple of votes.

That said, Bast is having a late rally... Rake's lead cut slightly, he's ahead 55.92 to 44.08, but that's down 1% just in the last hour...
If you know any voters sitting on the fence out there, now would be the time to kick them over.

I know. that would have been awesome, especially with Stover himself possibly writing it.

Couldn't help myself.

Quote

Waving my newly-acquired Kill-O-Zap in a vaguely menacing fashion, I stalk past my three remaining "hosts" and into the cramped little room that presumably passes for a bridge in this tin can. I can hear the others whispering quietly amongst themselves, but I'm not too concerned; I'm sure they're considering rushing me, but three-on-one in this case doesn't work out in their favor. I keep the raygun or whatever it is aimed to my rear as I scan the bridge controls; if I don't particularly want to hurt these yahoos I need to keep them at bay until I can find the button that activates the main engine of this ship: the Improbability Drive.

It's only another second before I spot it. I take a step forward, and hear the muffled patter of footsteps behind me; so they've decided to risk it. Idiots. The only things keeping me from pulling the trigger right now are the chance of a blind shot blasting out a chunk of hull, plus the fact that I'm just about there, anyway. Instead, I duck and roll to my left; three forms go hurtling past, and when I straighten up again they're sprawling tangled together on the floor. I shake my head and smirk at them, then flip open the glass dome that covers the Drive ignition and punch the glowing red button underneath.

My would-be assailants have managed to untangle themselves and are now staring up at me with confusion on their three faces, their forms beginning to waver under the influence of improbability physics. The ship around me starts blurring in the same fashion, and that's when I realize that my hands, and, upon closer inspection, the rest of me, still look normal. Well, fuck.

I lunge forward to grab onto one of them (preferably the blonde) just as they and their ship wink out of existence, and suddenly I'm freefalling in hard vacuum with only the stars overhead and an adult sperm whale five klicks below my feet to keep me company. I've got a minute, maybe two, of oxygen left in my lungs, and of all the fuck-me ways I ever thought I'd die, this has gotta be at the bottom of the list--

And then the stars are gone.

No, they've just moved. They've dimmed, too, and they're twinkling which means I'm in atmosphere, and godDAMN does it feel good to take a long deep breath of crisp, clean air. Reminds me of Home, actually. I'm sprawled out on a stretch of solid rock, so I tuck my left arm in and roll up onto that side to inspect my surroundings and fuck fuck FUCK suddenly I'm freefalling again, and only reflexes honed by a decade of training keep me from taking a quick one-way trip down to the forest floor lying two klicks below my dangling boots. My adrenaline-charged muscles clamp down in a death grip on the rock ledge; out of immediate danger, I take a couple of calming breaths and assess my surroundings.

My first guess, that I'd wound up on the side of a mountain, proves incorrect; the craggy rock wall curves AWAY below the ledge, disappearing behind the horizon of its own curvature. And as I take this in I notice too that we're fucking DRIFTING; the forest below crawls back and away at a slow but still noticeable pace. Suddenly I feel I'd rather be back on top of my ledge rather than hanging from it. I pull myself up and see the mountainside rearing up over me against the moonlit night sky. A flying fucking mountain. Well, shit, that's a new one.

There's a pair of large, ornate doors about twelve feet high and intricately carved from some black species of wood set into the rock a dozen paces from my ledge, and I decide to make that my next stop. I retrieve my Kill-O-Zap from where it lies on the, well, the 'ground', and cram it into the empty holster at the small of my back; it's a tight fit, but it's secure at least. I'm halfway to my destination when the doors swing open of their own accord, coming to a stop against the stone face with a dull 'thud' and revealing nothing but a yawning maw of pitch beyond. I've got nothing with which to make a light, but maybe I can improvise with my raygun. Worst case, I can squeeze a shot off into the blackness and see what it illuminates. I fiddle with my holster for a few seconds, already regretting securing the Kill-O-Zap so tightly, but before I can work the weapon free, I hear the crunch of a footfall, and a shadow falls over me.

To be continued...

Nice touch keeping the Kill-o-zap from Stover's write-up and switching to Caine's usual 1st person narrative.
Tho' the babble fish was DAMN FUCKING funny.

Pretty sure 300,000 years ago is the early-times Wu history that we've witnessed in flashbacks; the Imass/Jaghut wars and such, or maybe the K'Chain/Tiste wars. Rake is considerably older than that.

How does the timeline work anyway? At first I thought the Imass Jaghut wars happened BEFORE the rise of humanity... But Kallor is human is he not? And it seems to insinuate that his empire was well before the rise of the Imass.

Not all Imass joined the ritual, and also the nomenclature of Imass vs T'lan vs T'lan Imass is wildly inconsistant cross the books and characters. Chalk up Kallor talking about Imass to either of those.

Also, don't believe MTS - there's no reason to believe time in a warren passes differently than anywhere else. That excuse only ever existed in the first place because people didn't understand the proper sequence of the Silanda, and now it's become some widely believed truth for no reason.
