True, Origins' engine would be better.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

A friend of mine said something interesting about this today. That the engine, the coding and whatnot from Neverwinter Nights 2 were already in place, so technically it should be possible to use that for the enhanced edition of Baldurs Gate. A shame though, that it's not the same company.

Remembering the overall quality of Neverwinter Nights 2, I'm not sure I agree.

NWN2's base campaign wasn't great, but Mask of the Betrayer proves you can make an amazing game out of it.

Tangent: Hm... I didn't try that expansion because the main campaign turned me off. If it's that good, then I might go back and give it a try.

Back to the main thread: Regardless of what engine Bioware could choose to do a BG3 in, I'd just hope that they could pull it off. Bioware has my trust, but EA does not.

If BG3 happens, EA better fucking not have anything to do with it. Not if we want it to be any good.

EA has a tendency to kill any game that's not a sports game. ME 2, 3, and the Battlefield games have been surprisingly good outliers for them.

Mirror's Edge, anyone? That's a brilliant EA game to which, despite lackluster market reception, has been promised a sequel (in one form or another).

Also, if they were to use the nwn2 engine, I'd argue that the graphics had taken a nose dive compared to the original graphics.

The original BG2 graphics still hold up pretty well considering their age. But hand drawn stuff has a way of outlasting the digital.

While I was never a big Mirror's Edge fan, I will give EA props for it. But that's still just one gem of a game out of a pile of powdery rocks.

Actually yeah, I will give you that. Great game, I loved it a lot.
Though the fact that I never think of it as an EA game is probably a good example of my dislike of EA.

It's not so much to say they haven't had some good games with their logo on it, it's more that it always feels like all the good work in those games is someone else's doing, and all the bullshit, money grubbing and stupid decisions are EA's. They're like George Lucas is to Star Wars.
Actually, now that I think about it that analogy eplains why I really feel TOR could/should have been so much better, EA AND Lucas are involved in it.

EA and post millenial LucasArts do have a tendency to kill games... with KOTOR being a happy, happy exception.

I'm a terrible person for posting in a clearly dead thread, but there's a BG forum for feature requests and bugs and stuff forum.baldursgate.com

I believe you may have to wait for approval after signing up... if that's your kind of thing.

So I noticed this was out for PC now, anyone picked it up? Doesn't look to be much of an improvement on the various mods which ported BG to the BG2 engine from what I've seen, but it does seem to have made the game a bit more accessible to the modding community, so let's see what happens when the modders get to work.

Pretty good review from Gamebanshee, Eric's usually pretty fair and on-the-ball:

Sounds like... exactly what I expected. Meh.

Well, high hopes dashed again.

The part about how the graphics actually look *worse* as a result of GUI improvements like zooming??? LMFAO.

And FFS, why not push the release date back instead of releasing a buggy lump of shit software that crashes a dozen times a day. The "get it in the hands of our customers" mantra might work for debugging software utilities but it absolutely does not work for gamers.

Gamers seek immersive gameplay above all else. Bugs break immersion more than almost anything else. It's so damaging to a game when it's unplayable straight out of the box.

Glad to see somebody putting in some effort, but after reading that review I am putting all my retro-RPG-loving eggs in Project Eternity's basket.

That's unfortunate, I haven't had any crashing issues at all.

that review depresses me immensely.

If the game has as many problems as purported I dont see a BG 3 coming any time soon. Or if it does, it will look shit.

Thing is, with a new game you are free to develop the game mechanics, story, engine and interface together as a single cohesive unit rather than developing patches to improve a few features within the confines of an existing structure.

I'd think any eventual offering of BG3 would be immensely better as it would be developed on its own without devs needing to bend to the will of a 20 year old game engine. I'm not ready to give up on that yet, but as for remakes of BG1 and BG2...they aren't getting my 10 bucks.

I've given up on a new Baldurs Gate game. Hopefully Project Eternity will hopefully be somewhere close to as good as BG1 and 2.

I have really high hopes for PE, I think it will be great. It has the right people to make something extraordinary.
