It would take A LOT of cultural deprogramming to get a significant plurality of the USAians to endorse the idea of a common good.

I'm no American but too me it seems that the further left the democrats go the more they alienate the middle and the less likely they are to win the next election. It kinda seems the basic working of politics in most of the west really.

there's a growing polarization between cities that are becoming increasingly progressive, and rural/less economically developed areas, that are becoming more conservative/culturally backward, especially as the more progressive youths are moving out into said cities.

In places where electoral system is set up to favour the less populated areas, this leads to a significant rightward slide overall. The only real way to address this is to either reform the system, or pull up the backwaters.

Or a lot of abundance... and yes, persuasion.

They can be pragmatically reconciled. But yes there will probably still be megagazillionaires---politically disempowered however (adroitly manipulated if necessary).

They probably need to pull up the backwaters anything else will simply be seen as vote rigging in the other way and lead to even more hardcore alienation. We are seeing it to a lesser degree here where the rural parts which where solidly worker-left for most of time are now turning conservative or alt-right as they have been forgotten by politicans or at least feel that way.

The founders of the country, who lead to us Americans living life now, set up a Senate system that says Wyoming and North Dakota (less than 600k and less than 800k) have more and stronger representation on a federal level than the Los Angeles metro area (~18 million people). It's a very broken system that leads to much stoppage of progress and much weakening of large city power.

The middle isn't actually alienated much by overall Democratic policies and implementation - the middle is generally swayed by media companies that claim to be journalistic and mostly want the right wing folks to win elections. The coverage of the policies and candidates have slumped into "Republican said or does horrific, illegal, corrupt things, we can't do that" and "Democrat weak, yet able to propose and implement coherent policy that we don't like because it's not wealth extraction."

The faith of many older Democrats and voters in a mythical non partisan nature of major media entities is neglect in updating assumptions. The battles aren't lost and Brazil figured out how to mobilize and fight effectively with Lula's election.

Of course, our Secretary of State proudly aided and abetted Bolsonaro in fleeing Brazil illegally because we have a bunch of corruption mongers in power right now.

From the New York Times live updates:

Quote

Faces are getting longer at [Republican] Ken Paxton's watch party in Dallas. One man, upset about early votes in favor of Paxton's Democratic rival for Senate, James Talarico, walked by the press and said loudly, "This is how countries go into revolution."

[...] Trump said Tuesday night that he would accept the results of the midterm elections and was prepared to work with Democrats.

"I am absolutely willing to accept those results," he said in an interview with The New York Times.

He added: "We'll work with the Democrats, and we'll, you know, look forward to working with them. We'll probably work something out."

Mr. Trump blamed Republican losses on the fact that he was not on the ballot

They've already called South Carolina (Lindsey Graham's old seat) for the Democrat.

I'm shocked that Trump is being so gracious about this. Is it a ruse? Trying to catch his "enemies" off guard when the auto-coup occurs? Will he only postpone claims of election fraud---"oh we acted swiftly as soon as we got the evidence"?

Holy shit. This is a slaughter. House already called for Dems and sounds like a possible 55 seat senate majority too.

Anyone who has known a real narcissist would not want to be in the White House tonight.

It’s possible this is actually the best position for whatever toxic soup of personality disorders he has. He wasn’t on the ballot, but if he was it would have been different so he saves his ego. The republicans lost, people who lose are losers, fuck them, so it’s their weakness and he can blame them. Saves his ego and lets him hurt people .

It’s possible he is even delusional to think he will art of the deal the dems to still get what he wants. I suspect we will now see a lot of republicans break rank with him and it will only weaken his position further.

Let’s see where his head is at tomorrow, 1 week and 1 month from now.

Will he die, resign or get impeached first. Kalshi will start taking odds.

Big big big blue wave in almost every location in the country.

I'm so happy. But there's a ton of work to knock corruption down, deliver justice, protect health and human rights, and to get the violent thugs out of our police and border enforcement.

A lot of surprises tonight but I absolutely cannot believe what I'm seeing happening in Mississippi. I can only imagine that one's gonna end up with a recount and likely runoff. Which is absolutely mind-blowing to me. Fucking Mississippi.

I think I'm in (happy) shock after tonight.

Recount most definitely. Mississippi doesn't allow for a run off.

They also don't have recount laws, apparently.

Shame about Montana and Louisiana.

Florida was gettable, too, ugh.

No one expected the wave to be this strong, apparently, lol.

I've been bullish on 55+ seats for a while, so I hope tehy do hit 56.

What a delightful thing to wake up to!

Seems Boebert has lost, Sayed has won, Vivek has lost, Talarico has won, Collins has lost... Great stuff but now let's hope they can do something with it.
