They can impeach trump, but removal would still require some R's to cross the floor to do it.
I DO, however, think that Kegseth and RFK are possible to be turfed.

Trump posted one photo of a hat that said "VETO" but then seemed to indicate that he would accept the results when asked...and then he spent the rest of the night taking pot shots at all the Republicans who lost and saying why...like calling Greg Abbott a RHINO...LOL
He's always governed by Executive order, so congress will have to really utilize as many powers as they have to reign him in still...but I expect the Tariffs will be gone in January...I also don't know how this affects the war...

A lot of surprises tonight but I absolutely cannot believe what I'm seeing happening in Mississippi. I can only imagine that one's gonna end up with a recount and likely runoff. Which is absolutely mind-blowing to me. Fucking Mississippi.
I think I'm in (happy) shock after tonight.
I think I'm in (happy) shock after tonight.
Recount most definitely. Mississippi doesn't allow for a run off.
Thanks for correcting me on that.
I think the first thing that's going to start signalling how the next few years are going to progress is who gets lifted up as party leadership. There's so much new blood and energy in the party and people have not been happy with the old guard for some time.
I'm also super excited to see Ron Wyden (Oregon) coming back to the finance committee.

If it wasn't obvious I was NOT expecting this, and I admit to not thinking you all had it in you. As Amph said, this is a start and there's more work to do, but goddamn if that wasn't an impressive rebuke to Trumpism. Finally.

there's a growing polarization between cities that are becoming increasingly progressive, and rural/less economically developed areas, that are becoming more conservative/culturally backward, especially as the more progressive youths are moving out into said cities.
In places where electoral system is set up to favour the less populated areas, this leads to a significant rightward slide overall. The only real way to address this is to either reform the system, or pull up the backwaters.
They probably need to pull up the backwaters anything else will simply be seen as vote rigging in the other way and lead to even more hardcore alienation. We are seeing it to a lesser degree here where the rural parts which where solidly worker-left for most of time are now turning conservative or alt-right as they have been forgotten by politicans or at least feel that way.
Given how obvious this is, what has prevented it over the last fifty years or so?

It hurts me how much I feel this. I've been a West Coast Dem my entire voting life. I cannot express how frustrating it is to watch the Republican ratfucks in control steal election after election. And while I live in a blue stronghold (Portland area in Oregon) the decisions that are being made directly effect my life, and more importantly those of my daughters. Between denying aid for wildfires, selling off our forests, raiding our cities with ICE...
This is the first bit of hope I've felt in years, and I'm terrified that the Dems in control are going to fumble the ball yet again.

Also correct me if I'm wrong, but does this not put the fate of the Electoral college in play?
follow me
There's a national popular vote compact that takes effect once passed by the states controlling 270 electoral votes...it currently has 222 and is 48 shy...right, but now that the Democrats have complete control of the state govt of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Arizona for the first time since that compact was created...they can pass it and end the electoral college for good?
Is that right?
The last time a Republican president won the popular vote was HW in 1988.

Given how obvious this is, what has prevented it over the last fifty years or so?
Union organization in labor exploded during the 1940s and was strongest in the 1950s to 1960s before declining in the late 60s and then falling off a cliff in the 1980s (the time of Reagan). The Civil Rights movement being successful meant that some very bigoted white people who had previously been pro union decided to start abandoning the unions and purposely undercutting labor wins in order to attack the newly improved social and economic standing of black Americans.
The deregulation environment of Reagan and the collapse of American manufacturing plus the gas crisis and bizarre education set-up for labor caused many of the unions that weren't in culinary, transportation, care giving, teaching, and police to collapse or actually start getting run by Sean O'Brien types who are actually anti labor in a meta view (supporting Trump etc while "fighting" for small wage increases).
The insistence of people who want to live very rural lives and still get all of the social systemic care that others do in densely populated areas for the same or cheaper price also breaks things in a voting sense. Farmers will often vote for a Trump type who caused tariffs that ruined their crop sales for at least two to four years. They will vote for him or others who restrict immigration that they need to run their dairy farms. They will do it because there's an awful lot of bigots still and those who love to be little feudal lords over people who are scared to go elsewhere even when they're treated poorly or abusively where they currently are.
There isn't a neat solution to "fix" this problem because many of the farmers or rural types who go under or have to sell out are minorities themselves and the wealthier yet bigoted types have enough capital and resources and bailouts to survive this slow moving cataclysm this far. There's also an ethical cost of starving rural areas of care - people, especially women and children, already do and would in greater numbers get sick, hurt, and die.
The messaging of Fox, OAN, and so on convinces these rural folks that the best way forward is through hate when that actually strips money from their pockets and destroys their way of life. There's a real death cult aspect to it, especially as many of the older ones have ruined their relationship with their younger family members who don't fit neatly into the right wing molds or want better education etc.
We also have brewing problems with religious schools in rural areas that are basically not teaching kids much of anything - not even how to read or do basic math. That creates a bunch of not-savvy people who are often reliant on public benefits to get by and it's an enormous problem in my state already.
Edit: I should add that the rural areas are not monolithical. There are still plenty of left wing people in rural areas who are getting gerrymandered, have rights taken away, and deserve dignity and respect (plus healthcare). The dynamics are that the rural areas usually tilt right wing heavy, yet there are still victories in small towns and villages for progress rather than "low taxes and beating people up".

It's within the realm of possibility. I don't think we have the political will across all of these states right now to do that, yet I would be happy to be wrong.

Investigations into corruption can and will be started. These are months or years long endeavors and require cooperation with state or federal attorneys and law enforcement. The Trump administration will obstruct and delay, yet the process can't really be stopped if legislative control is kept and certain states keep going in hard.
Funding of federal agencies, healthcare, and the overall power of the purse will look very different. It may be possible to start the decade long process of rebuilding the federal government apparatuses after their maimings these past two years.
It's possible we get one new Supreme Court justice if Alito retires right now or if there's a poor health situation. Unsure of how that will play out because some of the Senators are goobers.
I think it's possible mid level appointees start getting investigated and prosecuted by states that take evidence from Congressional investigations and oversight.
I think it very likely that ICE gets its funding chopped big time.
All of this requires Democratic leadership to keep everyone on message and to work the levels of power constantly instead of inconsistently.

It is very obvious but not very easy to solve, efficiency move economic output to tiny pieces of the map the rest is basically not very economically viable.
Over here I know one region (capital) of the entire nation is actually running a surplus with two other larger cities nearly reaching a surplus with the rest of the nation basically being a drain on state resources.

Every state or country has a dynamic of the big city driving a huge portion of the state's economy. There's a balance between getting the city what it needs, providing a fair floor of care and support for all citizens, and giving people a fair amount of choice in how they live their lives.
Stopping the attacks on Iran and the insanity that is "negotiation" is hard with the general structure of Trump's executive actions (frequently illegal and dumb to boot) and the enthusiasm that the military leadership now has to go throw bombs at people. Cutting funding is a valid tactic, yet it is slow and creates a screaming group that js military aligned about how their needs aren't met. That's not an ethical problem, but it is a problem that would need vision and dedication to manage.

Is it possible to impeach him? Now that they will likely control both congress and senate?
There should be no end of potential criminal investigations to throw his way.

They can impeach him again, which only requires a simple majority in the House, but to convict and remove him they'd need 67 votes in the Senate. So if the Democrats end up with 56 seats in the Senate (and Fetterman goes along with it) then they'd need 11 Republicans.

TREMENDOUS VICTORY happening right now on Arrakis despite the LIES being spread by ATREIDES PROPAGANDISTS throughout the Imperium. We are WINNING the Battle of Arrakeen – BY A LOT!!!They say the Shield Wall has been "destroyed." WRONG! There was a small opening made in the Shield Wall. Practically nothing. Paul Atreides – "Muad’Dweeb," I call him – used ATOMICS against ROCKS because apparently he can’t win a battle without violating every Great Convention ever written. Very dishonorable! The Great Houses are looking at this very strongly. And now the Atreides propagandists are spreading WILD reports of Fremen riding SANDWORMS into Arrakeen. Sandworms! Very primitive. No vehicles, no infrastructure, nothing! And the Atreides want you to believe these people are taking over the Imperium? PLEASE!Reports that our great Sardaukar are being "annihilated" are complete ATREIDES DISINFORMATION. Think about it. These are SARDAUKAR – the finest soldiers in the Known Universe, feared on every planet, absolutely unbeatable – and we're supposed to believe they're being defeated by desert tribesmen? Doesn't make sense! I spoke to several Sardaukar commanders just moments ago. They said, "Your Majesty, we have never been more confident." GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS!And now there are ridiculous rumors that Princess Irulan is going to MARRY Paul Atreides. FAKE NEWS!!! Irulan is a beautiful Princess. Very intelligent. Tremendous writer, although sometimes she writes things I don’t particularly care for. She is NOT marrying Muad’Dweeb. And even if she did – which she WON’T – everybody knows marrying the Emperor’s daughter would actually prove that the CORRINO DYNASTY WON. Think about it! If Paul supposedly "overthrows" me and then immediately needs MY DAUGHTER, MY THRONE and MY IMPERIAL LEGITIMACY, who really won? SHADDAM WON! By a lot!The Atreides extremists can blow holes in mountains. They can ride their ridiculous worms. They can flood Arrakeen with thousands of screaming Fremen. They can threaten the spice supply and bully the Guild. But they CANNOT erase what we accomplished.EIGHTY-ONE GENERATIONS of Corrino rule! Over TEN THOUSAND YEARS! Tremendous dynasty. Maybe the greatest dynasty in human history. And now they want you to believe it all ends because some kid rides into town on a WORM??? Give me a break! The situation is completely under control. ARRAKEEN IS SECURE. SARDAUKAR ARE WINNING. THE GUILD IS WITH US. IRULAN IS NOT MARRYING HIM.LONG LIVE HOUSE CORRINO!!!

Not the least of which is that HE's turning on them....his own hand picked Rs who ran in these races and lost he's now calling them out and calling them losers and shit...like the whole thing seems to be fracturing...the Right Wing media sphere is in shambles too, Loomer crashing out about Sharia law and communism, Walsh blaming Trump and the war...like these people are turning on each other for blame.
