How in the sweet jumped up jiggety fuck does Texas freeze one winter really badly like 2 years ago...have an election since then to referendum the people who let it happen, then inexplicably re-elect the same fucking people and then freeze again this year because absolutely nothing was learned from last time or fixed since then...

Real question: How fucking stupid are Texans....????

Isn't Texas one of those ludicrously conservative areas? If so, there's your answer.

I guess? But like how do you vote against your own interests to the point of you know...possibly freezing to death, or going into major debt if you kept your power during the outage....that grid is a nightmare.

Yes, but Austin is progressive (... aside from most of the legislators, since it's also the state capitol), and '[t]he epicenter of the crisis was Austin, where the city-owned power utility said it didn't know when it would be able to restore power to just under 150,000 households and businesses, many of which have lacked electricity since Wednesday morning.

[...] scrambling to fix power lines downed by freezing rain and fallen trees.'

Austin power outages could last days after Texas ice storm | The Texas Tribune

'These outages, however, are not being caused by statewide power grid conditions [according to government officials, at least].

[...] "The power grid itself is functioning very effectively as we speak right now," [governor] Abbott [claimed ...] "And there is not anticipated to be any challenge to the power grid in the state of Texas."

You can check grid conditions online. [...]

Ice on trees and powerlines can lead to localized outages'

Texas power outages: ERCOT grid normal, local power issues exist (kxan.com)

... still a ridiculous failure to winter-proof power-lines.

But don't worry QT, President Carlson will fix it by invading Canada....

The good news is one of these motherfuckers is dead...

To be fair though, Ford won this time on 18% of the electorate on Ontario...the other 22% who bothered to vote split between the Liberals and NDP, and that split sadly handed him the win....so it was voter apathy rather than stupidity on our part. If 80% of Ontario had voted, Ford would not be premier right now. This guy skated into his second term on fumes where the NDP nearly caught his ass out with only 18% of 14.9million people voted for him....worse, he KNOWS it now, so he's setting up his cushy post-political life on some board somewhere by giving as much to developers and corporations as he can now...

Yes, but Austin is progressive

Except what's progressive in American politics would make Jacob Rees-Mogg blush, or get a raging lob on, or both.

This.

The most Left guy in your whole country at a political level is Bernie Sanders....who cannot get elected for trying....and in MOST other Western countries he would be considered Right-Center at BEST.

Just to be clear, many of Bernie Sanders ideas would be far left concepts in Denmark, not centre right. People often exaggerate just how socialist Europe is.

He wants to redistribute property and wealth, which most people would lable as extreme in Denmark. When you're middle class, socialism is nice, but skyrocketing property values and tax breaks are better.

That may be true, but many of the things seen as far left in the US (single payer healthcare for example) are common elsewhere.

And Austin has express lanes. There would be protestors chained to the excavators if you tried to build those in BC.

Hmm closest post I could find. A trillion dollars of defence can't stop some balloons.

The truly scary thing is if you knocked out the grid in this way, the replacements to get it working come from China. Yikes.

Luckily it's a bit harder than they make it out to be..but possible.

Totally a dry run. Out in the open. As a warning about Taiwan probably.

'DeSantis Responds to Trump Pervert Accusations From Between Towers of Diapers

Groomer accuser attacked by groomer accuser.

[...] created a national frenzy by repeatedly arguing that discussing LGBTQ issues with students is a way to "groom" them for sexual molestation.

Trump [...] turned the tables on the governor, circulating some extremely low-evidence accusations made by users of his Truth Social site that DeSantis engaged in the "grooming" of minors during a year that he spent teaching high school [...] (The "evidence" was a blurry photo of, allegedly, a young DeSantis at a party. [...]

"DeSantis giving this statement about grooming and smearing while swaddled by packages of diapers tells me that he's not ready for this"'

Ron DeSantis responds to Trump's groomer charge at diaper press conference

'During [the] State of the Union address, first lady Jill Biden and "second gentleman" Doug [...] appear to have shared an unexpected kiss before an audience of millions, sending the nation into an awkward fit of cringe.

[...] Depending on the camera angle, it either looked intentional, or like they just misread each other and wound up mouth-to-mouth in front of their respective spouses.

[...] Videos and screencaps of their "swinger" behavior circulated, and the hashtag #swingers trended on Twitter. Some of the lustier responses called the State of the Union a "swinger party," while others applauded the "wife swap" and expressed cuck-like glee at the way Jill so readily kissed another man in front of her husband. The surprise of it all seemed bipartisan, with the most common reaction being a sort of collective, slack-jawed ick.'

The Doug Emhoff–Jill Biden kiss: Do it again

#Uniter

In more substantial news, that idiot Biden is trying to cripple China's AI industry, which is a crime against the future of humanity. (He's justifying it by claiming it's to prevent military applications or human rights abuses by the government, but the restrictions won't have a huge impact on the Chinese government---while having a potentially titanic impact on private industry.) But on the bright side it might eventually end up inspiring China to be the first to develop commercial photonic computers (or even practical general purpose quantum computers), which could be a huge boon for the future, and accelerate advances in AI....

I'm genuinely curious Azath and feel free, should it merit, to take this to another thread dedicated to the subject.

In what way do you think the advance of AI will do anything positive overall for humanity. Personally I see the widening of the inequality gap and rapid increase of peoe below the poverty line as the end result, because its big corps pushing it, and they and their owners don't give a fuck about the peasants

So with MTG and now Hannity spinning the idea of a national divorce for the USA along Red/Blue State lines (also called Secession/Sedition)...do we think that BOTH of them are stupid or is Hannity just playing his role as "Fox News Riles the Unintelligent Base, while knowing they spew bullshit"?

Because MTG slowly trying to reposition her statements as it dawns on her how FUCKED they would be without the rest of the Blue States and the Feds...the thing that no one comments on that I always note when someone talks like this is that Fascism (whether they want to realize that's what they are aiming at/doing) is inherently entropic. A death cult. A spiralling miasma of propaganda and otherism until no one is left.

Like let's say (ignoring for a moment that such a thing would fail for a thousand other reasons) that MTG and the MAGA idiots got their wish and the Red States were able to secede, be their own thing and become whatever evangelical white utopias where they controlled everything...the very fact of fascist rule like that would unravel them...because once they only have THEIR people, and no one else in those red states is left to be their "other"....which as it stands seems to be POC, LGBTQ, the educated, and whatever other whipping posts they've set up as their others to fight against...let's say all those people left and they were left with their pristine white religious unintelligent population only...fascism demands an OTHER. They won't STOP that rhetoric becuase they've gotten the thing they claimed to want...they will find NEW Others amongst that supposedly "pure" population to persecute. This will roll and repeat forver until either a large enough group realizes that it's fascism and they will die from it, or the whole thing implodes until only a tiny cabal of top brass people are left who will all have knives out for each other for that top spot.

Every country that has dabbled in fascism has EVENTUALLY fallen, and if they haven't yet, they will.

What makes them think they will be different? They can't be that dumb. Or maybe they can?

They are both in fact stupid, but Hannity does not believe (nor does he feel any compulsion to believe) the things he says.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

To what end? Like how does that interfere with what I said (Assuming that the Red States COULD secede without losing their attachment to the US; which they cannot as far as I know....they would literally become little countries (with no infrastructure or real economy to speak of)...so like do you expect them to steal nukes or make their own? In which case, they would be going up against the military they helped make into the biggest one in the world...like that makes no sense.

Also, the funny thing is that both MTG and Hannity live in States that Biden/Dems won (Georgia and NY respectively)....so they'd literally fall on the Liberal side of the argument...

Like none of this makes any sense and is like when a teenager wants to live by their own rules under their parents roofs....it's childish nonsense.
