It might also be helpful to point out that Obama-Biden was the first successful post-Dixiecrat Democratic ticket for Pres/VP. Before then, it was the conventional wisdom that the Democrats would never win the White House without a Southerner on the ticket to draw out those Dixiecrats who hadn't yet defected to the Republicans. That's why John Kerry picked John Edwards (from North Carolina) as his running mate. That's why Dukakis picked Lloyd Bentsen (a Texan) as his running mate. Clinton was from Arkansas, Gore was from Tennessee, Carter was from Georgia. The Democrats who ignored this conventional wisdom (McGovern and Mondale) failed so epically that no one else dared to risk it until Obama won the nomination in 2008. Since he was himself a black man, picking a Southern running mate probably seemed pointless.

Hillary picking a running mate from Virginia seems like a step backwards into that old conventional wisdom.

Which is weird because she was first lady of Arkansas so she should already have the southern creds.

She is from Park Ridge. A nice suburb on the northwest side. Still she is married to Bill and he is drawing big crowds. It is more then likely that he will have more input on policy then Tom.

It isn't that interesting. Makes total sense. Blacks were not going to vote against Obama. They are not going to vote for Trump now. While rural whites weren't going to vote for obama and they love trump. Whistling dixie mofo anyway.

Urban whites aren't that bit anymore. You are thinking of rural or suburban whites. Urban whites see more benefit from social programs and the impact of domestic spending programs. As a group they tend to be higher educated and more liberal leaning. As a white urban male.

Yah I am conflating urban and suburban for sure, but I dunno about rural. If small city & town people want to consider themselves rural -- like they conflate working class and rural for whatever reason -- then they're just being wrongheaded. Then again, I know working people generally consider themselves "middle-class" regardless of whether they're actually above or below the cutoff points. It would make my head spin a little of people wrongheadedly considered themselves both middle class AND rural when they are truly neither one, but I suppose I shouldn't let it surprise me.
