The missing context here is that BK is in the South where Democrats were the party of segregation. After the VRA and CRA, segregationist Southerners started to abandon the Democratic Party, but it has been a long process. It's not uncommon for old, racist white people in the South to still identify with the Democrats. To them, it's the party of Strom Thurmond, George Wallace and (formerly) Jesse Helms. When it became clear that the Republicans weren't going to overturn the CRA either, some never bothered to leave the party, and we still have conservative Dixiecrats holding office all across the South. There was a big purge of Dixiecrats as recently as 2010/2011, when my Dixiecrat congressman was voted out on a Fire Pelosi slogan and the Mississippi state legislature was finally taken over by the Republicans. This happened all across the South in 2010/2011. Yes, there were many old segregationists who voted for Bill Clinton, who was from Arkansas and paid lip service (at least) to segregationist Democrats. Few of those people also voted for Obama. Maybe some did so they could say they did. Maybe some said they did and didn't. I really doubt the codgers BK mentions are far from this particular mold.

I didn't know that. How times change.

It might also be helpful to point out that Obama-Biden was the first successful post-Dixiecrat Democratic ticket for Pres/VP. Before then, it was the conventional wisdom that the Democrats would never win the White House without a Southerner on the ticket to draw out those Dixiecrats who hadn't yet defected to the Republicans. That's why John Kerry picked John Edwards (from North Carolina) as his running mate. That's why Dukakis picked Lloyd Bentsen (a Texan) as his running mate. Clinton was from Arkansas, Gore was from Tennessee, Carter was from Georgia. The Democrats who ignored this conventional wisdom (McGovern and Mondale) failed so epically that no one else dared to risk it until Obama won the nomination in 2008. Since he was himself a black man, picking a Southern running mate probably seemed pointless.

Hillary picking a running mate from Virginia seems like a step backwards into that old conventional wisdom.

Which is weird because she was first lady of Arkansas so she should already have the southern creds.

It's really obvious to most people that Bill was the real southerner in that marriage. She's from the Chicago suburbs.

She is from Park Ridge. A nice suburb on the northwest side. Still she is married to Bill and he is drawing big crowds. It is more then likely that he will have more input on policy then Tom.

It's interesting, though, how her base of support in the primary shifted from 2008 to 2016. There are obvious reasons for it, but she gained black voters and lost rural whites.

It isn't that interesting. Makes total sense. Blacks were not going to vote against Obama. They are not going to vote for Trump now. While rural whites weren't going to vote for obama and they love trump. Whistling dixie mofo anyway.

I did say the reasons were obvious, didn't I? And I still find it interesting.

Where is she with urban whites though? Like the if-we-pray-hard-enough-the-factories-will-come-back bloc. Same pattern?

Urban whites aren't that bit anymore. You are thinking of rural or suburban whites. Urban whites see more benefit from social programs and the impact of domestic spending programs. As a group they tend to be higher educated and more liberal leaning. As a white urban male.

Yah I am conflating urban and suburban for sure, but I dunno about rural. If small city & town people want to consider themselves rural -- like they conflate working class and rural for whatever reason -- then they're just being wrongheaded. Then again, I know working people generally consider themselves "middle-class" regardless of whether they're actually above or below the cutoff points. It would make my head spin a little of people wrongheadedly considered themselves both middle class AND rural when they are truly neither one, but I suppose I shouldn't let it surprise me.

I love this ad. It's beautiful how simple it is and how many different buttons it pushes.

My response was going to be "wat" and then I read the comments on YouTube and my faith in humanity was restored. (Did I really just say that? Yep, I did.)

I purposefully avoided the comments section (It's the NRA fucking channel for god's sake). I saw this ad in the SAS subreddit.

Reading Charlie Daniels's blog after 9/11 was a real fun way to pass the time. That was before I found Orson Scott Card's blog and lost my innocence entirely. I just went to check on Charlie's page and LOLed because the archive has the year 2000, skips 2001-2009, and picks back up at 2010. A whole mess of his nuanced opinions zapped into the ether, I guess.

Maybe it's just because I'm from Mississippi, but I can totally hear 3 syllables in that. (Though I can see how others wouldn't.)

Uhhhhhhhhhh so Trump suggested one of those "2nd Amendment Solutions" to Hillary choosing SCOTUS justices once she's elected: https://twitter.com/...093253260390400

Now trying to walk it back as a reference to the voting bloc, but the context was clearly HRC already as president selecting justices, so that doesn't hold up. He is making a reference -- I wouldn't even call it a joke -- to assassination, plain and simple. Not just despicable, but truly dangerous.

This seems like an awesome website. What happened on july 12?

This graph really seems to me to lend credence to the idea that the media manipulated the news to make the race seem closer than it was at first to sell news

Or maybe the diabolically evil HRC manipulated the media I to portraying a close race so Trump.would be her opponent in the election and she will waltz into the Whitehouse.

I like my version
