You all need to call your representatives...

Hakeem Jeffries CANNOT be allowed to be Speaker, and Chuck Schumer CANNOT be allowed to be the Majority leader. These two have proven they will not hold anyone accountable, they are in the pocket of Bibi, and Jeffries got caught having a meeting with Jared....my bet is that Jeffries has a slimy deal with letting Trump off. Jeffries was already out there saying "the American people don't want us to get even, they want affordability"....Bitch they want BOTH...what you all can't wLk and chew gum at the same time? The Maga clowns were sure able to take away rights and pull illegal shit at the same time...

Call your reps and tell them these two cannot be given leadership roles.

EDIT: Like my fear is that it will take another election cycle to get this to shake out now if Schumer and Jeffries are allowed to be leaders...because they will fumble the ball in holding the admin accountable and Americans will have to wait till 2028 to show them their displeasure by getting them primaried...that should not be the case. I hope the rest of the Democratic Party who votes for these two positions understands that if they bring these two centrist Pieces of shit into leadership roles after the biggest blue wave in my lifetime, the 2028 election will be a referendum on their lack of spine and the Republicans will get back in...

I don't know how much clearer I can be that I completely think this is going to get fumbled and these two will just slot right back into their Aipac-funded slots and do NOTHING of consequence to hold anyone accountable.

You are correct of course. They should be able to do both at once. They are creating a false dichotomy by saying anything to the contrary.

This is why the presidency is important: FDR dragged the Supreme Court kicking and screaming into having a social safety net (let it stand or we are going to make it so your opinions are obsolete by adding 15 new justices). LBJ dragged the Confederacy kicking and screaming into at least a semblance of equality via national guard in the 60s.

They HAVE to seize on the moment and create that momentum for real change in 2028 and beyond by showing the public that justice will be served even if your last name is Trump.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Boebert is down 2500+ votes and only 8% left to count. Hooboy, bets on what she does if she gets voted out?

Isn't "talking head" what she was doing in that movie theatre?

I'm no American but too me it seems that the further left the democrats go the more they alienate the middle and the less likely they are to win the next election. It kinda seems the basic working of politics in most of the west really.

there's a growing polarization between cities that are becoming increasingly progressive, and rural/less economically developed areas, that are becoming more conservative/culturally backward, especially as the more progressive youths are moving out into said cities.

In places where electoral system is set up to favour the less populated areas, this leads to a significant rightward slide overall. The only real way to address this is to either reform the system, or pull up the backwaters.

They probably need to pull up the backwaters anything else will simply be seen as vote rigging in the other way and lead to even more hardcore alienation. We are seeing it to a lesser degree here where the rural parts which where solidly worker-left for most of time are now turning conservative or alt-right as they have been forgotten by politicans or at least feel that way.

You might be surprised how few people actually change their vote. The vast majority of people vote the same way they did last time around.

The idea of competing for a "middle" voter is not necessarily accurate. Modern political strategy often revolves more around trying to get the people who support you to come out and vote (/that the people who support the other candidate don't bother).

You also have things like demographic shifts, first time voters, and so on, so it's not only about mobilisation.

But the idea that the left needs to "win the centre" does not ring very true. It basically assumes left-leaning voters will still come out and vote rather than staying home.

Perceived centrist candidates like Clinton and Biden-Harris haven't exactly had a strong track record electorally. The right has clearly had more recent success trying to rally up the right-wing base instead of playing for the centre a la Romney or McCain. Clearly this election has been a disaster but it also goes to show just how badly you can govern before you get repudiated, and that's always likely to have some consequence (see also Liz Truss).

If you look at this result it's majorly driven by turnout.

This is not only the US either. If you look at the UK, where there is more party diversity, what you'll find is voters are largely switching within blocs -- say Labour to Greens or Reform to Conservative -- rather than between them.

I'd argue that the West is going to stay in an anti-establishment political zeitgeist for the foreseeable future, for genuine structural reasons. The middle in most places is adrift when it comes to really motivating a base and mostly seems to win gritted teeth "us or the far right" contests.

This isn't to say abandon rural voters or anything. But you probably won't win them by chasing the middle either.

Seems like a disaster in the making. It's now the rational choice for those voters not to bother crossing the aisle, because they know they will never be represented by the other team, who have no intention of representing their interests and never did. The votes are getable, for a moderately competent politician. Short term, you can get easy votes by playing the 'US or the far right' but if that's the only card you've got, it's just a stay of execution, because it's not real support, it's just lack of other options.
