The White House is going to say no (hysterical laughter optional) and the Republicans are going to back them up so they aren't completely screwed at the 2016 election.

e: Yes this is assuming that it's even feasible or vaguely a good idea.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

47 years after the end of the Civil War, we're still fighting it. But we call it 'class warfare' now.

By the way, there are petitions on there for every state in the union, all worded exactly the same way, meaning badly.

Or perhaps her knowledge of geography is lacking. The Vietnam war ended 37 years ago after all. It's easy to hit the wrong key.

Everyone knows that Texas won't leave the union, because then they wouldn't be "'mer'cans" anymore.

I'd love to see some economists crunch some numbers just so people could see how retarded all of these states would be for leaving. Not that the people signing these petitions would care, I'm sure they won't let their petition be hampered by those annoying little things called facts.

I do wonder, though, how many of these signatures are legitimate. I'm sure a great deal of them are, but I have to wonder if there are other people who sign the petition just for shits and giggles (and to see what the Obama Administration says in response).

On the other hand, I'm interested in seeing how the Obama Administration reacts to Washington and Colorado's legalization of marijuana. I don't expect to see any major headway for awhile, but this really sets the stage for a lot of future stuff.
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

If they did, they'd be kicked out of the GOP. ;)

I suspect the petitions are just a joke, and weren't even started by people in the state. The way this is being reported in the media, you'd think it was, for example, just people from Texas signing the Texas petition. It's not.

Just found these, posted after a 'discussion' someone had with an acquaintance of theirs complaining the election was based on people rather than acreage:

Something like half the states haven't even finalized their results yet. Also, I was wrong about the petitions apparently:

http://www.sunherald...ions-white.html

It's very hot on their Facebook post; lots of people saying they signed it and how they don't recognize America any more, and lots of other people saying they're being stupid and even treasonous.

I'm not an American and I don't know much about american economics, so this might sound stupid, but:
What exactly would be the upside/downside to having those states split off? I know a lot of them are the ones depending the most on the welfare system, but I don't know what positive effect they have on the economy.

For those not of this blessed union, it's illegal to secede regardless of how many signatures an online petition gets, so I hope nobody is taking this remotely seriously.

But if you're just playing hypotheticals, what would happen would be a quick slide into third world status and several localities emerging as The Hills Have Eyes territory, in a case of life meets art.

The SCOA even ruled on the legality of seceding states after the civil war in case Texas v. White. The rule set out "Chief Justice salmon p. chase, in his majority opinion, held that the Constitution "in all its provisions, looks to an indestructible Union, composed of indestructible States." Once a territory gained admission to the Union as a state, its relationship to the Union was perpetual and indissoluble unless terminated by revolution or consent of the states."

So if a state no longer wished to be part of our Union then it could either successfully revolt or get permission from every single other state to leave.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

Those of us who live in them would no longer be Americans. Of course, no one who has signed the petitions actually wants that to happen...at least, that's what they're saying on the Facebook post by my local paper. They say it's just a statement.
