Lots of places. Ossof is ahead and the remaining votes to count are extremely democratic from places considered democratic strongholds.

Terez was watching this - https://results.decisiondeskhq.com/

Essentially anyone who hasn't called it already is just exploiting for clicks.

I am extremely curious about the people who voted for Perdue but not for Loeffler. What is the reasoning there?

So let me get this straight...

The Republicans lost the House, The Senate, and Presidency in four years. Trump’s legacy is hilarious.

In that case in accordance with my promise I’m laughing my ass off. No doubt trump is significantly responsible for the loss in Georgia.

@quicktidal - definitely. I wonder if republicans are cable or reexamination. That said they gained a lot of house seats, lost the senate by the thinnest margin and normally win the presidency without the popular vote and still got trump the most votes in us history behind only Biden. It’s not excactly the rebuke we would all hope for

I think they've made moderate gains in the local, city/county levels in most of the rural areas, while losing positions in the cities. I know New Hampshire had the state House and Senate flip Republican, mostly because the Democrats stopped campaigning in person while the Republicans kept going + Governor Sununu is popular enough to get some down ballot votes in a presidential election that had super high turnout.

Any chance the Dems will use this chance to push through some much needed reforms to stop republican bulkshittery?

Bulkshittery was a typo, but you know what, given the quantity of it over the years it works

I give it 50/50. I'm still in the camp that Biden and Pelosi and Schumer seem to think that they are personally friends with the GOP and they seem to think the GOP has any interest in governing for their voters.

Its weird.

Someone on Twitter said something along the lines of "I look forward to the Democrats negotiating with themselves decreasing amounts of progress as they chase the impossible dream of bipartisanship".

We've already had a "forgive 50k of student loans per person" proposal shrink down to "10k and that's a huge if". The crappy part is that Biden could actually executive order it and doesn't need to get it through Congress.

I'm keeping my actual expectations low, while pushing for better things. The Georgia senate results have me thinking that hewing closer to Bernie Sanders's actual political positions without having the "socialist" label firmly affixed to the person is a super super popular thing.

Also, fuck Larry Summers (treasury secretary under Obama) for saying 2k checks to everyone would be a bad thing. You helped the banks get out almost consequence free from the mortgage crisis and you pull this shit? Fuuuuck you.

They view themselves as personally friends with many of these GOP senators and representatives. That's the infuriating part - if they're all friends, why do the Democrat ones always get fucked when it's time to vote or write legislation? (It's because they're not actually friends...)

I think Ted Cruz and a couple of the worst GOP representatives are the only ones that don't really have people publicly saying they're friends. They're that annoying to be around.

I want the 2k covid relief checks to go through once Biden is Innagurated and I want to watch Harris cast the deciding vote in Mitch's smug fucking face. Can that happen? I don't know, I'm just dreaming of watching the Turtle lose any influence he has.

As far as I'm concerned, it should be 2k every month until the vaccine is fully rolled out and we are good to go.

It's literally the best thing for the economy and the population, but it isn't a tax giveaway to rich old people, so the GOP doesn't want it.

I agree. In Canada we were offered CERB til like September or something from March. It was $1400 a month I think? I don't know, I didn't apply as I was still working from home.

Anecdotal asides: I've had multiple people here use the phrases "we're turning socialist!" and "I dont trust the government now" to me personally. And you have no idea the patience and practice living here it has taken to not go Lewis Black.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

About the student loan forgiveness, maybe worth it’s own thread but I am curious about the ethics of it.

The common argument, and one I disagree with, is I paid my debts so why should they not have to. Is it unfair yes but it’s also in my thoughts almost like an abuse victim becoming the abuser. I was screwed so everyone should get screwed.

At some point things change and not everyone would get the benefits. I’d be happy if the government offered interest free loans or made college free going dorward. However if your giving away free scholarships it’s got to be based on merit no? I can see starting the slate clean going forward but not so sure how easy it right it is to wipe it out retroactively?

That said 50k dollars is a lot of money. It’s more than most people in America make in a year. Tax is tax. You can say your raising it from billionaires but at the need of the day money is money and the treasury is the treasury. Why give 50k dollars to people who went to college? By definition not the poorest of the poor. People who chose not to go to college because they didn’t afford it will now be giving money to people who did?

————-

2k a month for the unemployed going forward might make sense. Payroll protection plans of 2k a month per employee going fwd makes sense. America is so shit scared of socialism though that they said you can still have your job, be unaffected by the pandemic, make 75k a year and still get the stimulus check.

I mean hey, who doesn’t want 2000 dollars. I’m very happy Uncle Sam decided to send me a check for a ps5, now if only I can find one in stock somewhere. However that said I found work, I’m doing relatively okay. Meanwhile ten percent of people (not sure of the real statistic) are only currently not homeless because it’s currently illegal to evict them. They are months behind on rent.

Targeted giving seems to be the better path but it seems something beyond America’s thinking

50k is but a drip in the bucket for me. I'm completely against it if it takes away IBR plans.

Ha! Chuck Schumer is speaking and he is not hiding how pleased he is with where things currently stand. He would become the majority leader, if things hold as they are, yeah?

With the VP's deciding vote, yes, a dem would be Majority Leader. I'd assume it to be Schumer but I don't know for sure.

I'm watching Trump speaking right now. Holy fucking hell, it's incredible how I'm continuously amazed at how incoherent he is. It's not that I don't understand the words that he's saying, but everything he says is just fucking crazy.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

He is LITERALLY standing on that podium and calling his own party weak! And that he is going to call them the "weak republicans" from now on.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!
