After reading the interview with Anomander, I realized that I have many questions regarding the forum and the people in it.

I'm sure there are lots of things us newbies ought to know about, so please post your stories. I'm particularly curious about...

1) Simeon and the dead bodies?
2) Who or what is Abyss? I picture everything from a 13 year old autistic boy, housewife, or mean 60 year old man that yells at everybody to get off his lawn.
3) Why is there such a large concentration of forum folks located in the Commonwealth and a decided lack of American participants? I choose to believe this is because most of my countrymen are participating covertly as some kind of black ops unit. There could be 20 of them currently working to prevent Cy from joining chat right now...

I'm not a stickler for truth, so if you want to make up something and call it gospel I am good with it.

1. No clue how that came into existence, it was in full swing as a legend from the past when I became really active here.

2. Abyss is everyone and no-one, but mostly a Canadian who likes the limelight on the boards when wearing the kittymask and incredibly hard to get a grasp of outside of the forum. My guess is he wants to keep forum and personal life seperated, perhaps becuase he is either not what we all think he is, or he is famous. Sadly, the only Canadian celebrities are Bryan Adams and Celine Dion, and you just can't tarnish the MBotF by being them.
Or he is Donald Sutherland, in which case, the coolness of that coming out would make everything implode.

3. Mostly because MBotF was released with a delay in the States. Commonwealth and Euro people thus discovered the board before the Amerikanskis did. Though in all fairness, more and more US citizens join up.

GH will love this thread,

Abyss also controls about 45% of the accounts on this board as his puppets. He's quite the nefarious character.

There's a ton of other stuff. You should check out the jeopardy games, that's where I learned all my lore.

1) The Simeon thing came about as a gentle means of mocking his devout Christianity.

Tiste absolutely held to not having sex before marriage (which happened last year, and lead to some interesting discussions on here regarding advice and the like), and some of the other forumites started joking that dead bodies wouldn't count because they weren't living things.

like most jokes, the reason it stuck was that for a while Tiste hated it, then eventually his feelings regarding it morphed into wry, long-suffering acceptance - provided you'd been around the forum long enough to warrant a measure of familiarity with him.

3) For whatever reason, MBotF was not initially published in the states. Apparently the fantasy publishers there considered it too confusing/ambitious/whatever and so it was only available in the US via import from Canadaland or the UK. It would be extremely churlish of me to point out that this holds true to the fact that Commonwealth members are undoubtedly more intelligent, witty, sexually attractive and cleaner than our doltish Yankee cousins, so I won't mention it.

Yeah, don't ever tease Tiste about his necrophilia. He's very sensitive.

So half the "people" on this board are actually mindless automatons that belong to Abyss? Or a clone army?!

1.I don't know.
2. Some say he is a cat with human hands and that in order to keep his identity secret he uses a false name online. All we know is that he's probably Canadian.
3. America was late to party and also these books are really big and complicated. I also recall some pretty offensive cover art for the American GotM.

However did I manage? :D

I'd say: Little push from the publisher, late to the party, and GotM being a fairly radical first novel.

It's not like GotM and DG are huge books. Complicated is closer to the mark, possibly.

And the original US covers looked like "utterly generic fantasy story X" covers. Ugh. :D

I was far more turned off by the name "Whiskeyjack" than the terrible covers. Jordan's WoT immunized most of the U.S. fantasy populace against judging books by their cover.

But HD. Half of the WoT covers looked like shit.
Half the books were shit. Surely a poor series to pull the book by its cover schtick

All of the WoT covers are shit. The first 6 books certainly aren't, imo.

That said, a bad character name is far more likely to put me off than a cover. I have come to expect terrible covers.

Let me add that a bad "back-blurb" is far worse than either combined.

How about the reverse Jordan? Tchaivovskky's Shadow of the Apt covers are fantastic....
