But it's a giant metal head.
And the astronaut lady is looking up its nose.

Nitpick - She's nowhere near his nose....she's looking up his cheek if anything. :p

I liked the extended trailer.

Made me rethink some of my predictions. I thought it was going to be more focused on the alien ship and how it comes to be on the planet they find it on in Alien, but after seeing some of the creatures, the blood spattered walls, frantic running around, screaming, etc. I think the main plot is going to be a bit less....macroscopic. It will likely have a lot more to do with combatting an alien presence among the crew than the more grandiose space opera I was envisioning before.

Has anybody else seen the supposedly leaked plot for the movie? I won't put it here just in case, but there is a complete synopsis out there that supposedly came directly from the studio. I read some of it and forced my eyes away before I got to the end just in case. What I read seemed very legit though, and also very cool. Has it been debunked or officially rebutted? If not, the plot for this movie is at least as solid as Alien, and then some. Can't wait.

I'm pretty sure that synopsis (which I saw a BIT of before also forcing myself to look away) was indeed at least VERY close to what we will get...and I thought it was super cool as well. It also jives with what Ridley has been saying about us needing to "question where the Space Jockeys and Aliens come from...who's holding all the strings since the aliens at least were an "end result of some kind"."

Alien space boogers........gross.

And RE the jockey, I hope they give it some crazy completely unforseen function. It looks like it's using some kind of control or gun system just based on appearances, but it would be neat and if the big gun-looking thing was actually meant to plug into some kind of egg-laying tube and the space jockey turns out to in fact have a mundane role as an egg nursery tender.

Or some other completely different function altogether.

Endoscope operator for giant alien colonoscopies?

Giant alien nosehair trimmer?

Nah. Thats what the enormous thing on the back of the Alien Queen's head was obviously designed for.

Yeah, I'm really glad that Ridley has the clout as a director that means the suits at Fox realized they shouldn't screw with his film and make him cut it for a lesser rating.

ALIEN was R.

PROMETHEUS is R.

That's goddamn right.

OK possible SPOILER ALERT if you are desperately waiting to see this, but I watched it last night so

I'll be honest and say that I was left slightly confused by a film that started off brilliantly and then slowed up and lost its way. Whether this was due to editing/time constraints, bad casting/ acting or what I don't know. A second watch may change my mind but anyway.

Pro's were the whole thing looked amazing and the 3D (of which I am not a fan) was done well. The sets were fantastic in scope and gave the film a unique feel whilst retaining the "Gigeriness" of the previous outings. Fassbender and Rapace were very good, I could have watched Fassbender's "David" watching old movies by himself for an hour, I am now finally convinced that Fassbender is the real deal. Rapace has a scene in this film that was just awesome, you will know it when you see it. Suffice to say it had me clenching my teeth and pushing back into the seat, whilst I listened to the sage musings of my missus who in a roundabout way could empathise with what was going on onscreen (that's all i'm gonna say). Alien SFX were great ,as was Charlize Theron's ass in a tight catsuit. Unfortunately that's where Charlize's impact ends as I have no clue what her character was doing in this film, highlighting perhaps my major gripe with the film.

Con's - Characterization was not good. Barring "David" and "Shaw" I did'nt give a crap about anybody else in the film. There are 17 crew aboard the Prometheus and they don't gel or act as a "unit" onscreen, if anything they are a bit like redtops from star trek. They are incomparable to the crew of the Nostromo or the marines on the Sulaco whose portrayals onscreen evoked feelings of camaraderie and genuine emotion. Now before anyone starts I'm not comparing movies here, just the way the characters are drawn. Imo, barring the odd chuckle from Idris Elba's "Captain" and the geologist dude whose name escapes me, the rest of the cast might as well have not been there. This bad characterization added to the sense of randomness I got half way through the film as things just got confusing. "Meeting your maker" is quite a common theme in sci fi, Star Trek and perhaps more tellingly 2001 A Space Odyssey spring to mind. Prometheus is doing the same thing only not as clearly. I understand there is the whole "Alien" mythos to respect and in that regard it sort of worked and sets up nicely for another film (the planet Prometheus takes place on is NOT LV426).

Wah I could waffle on for ages but anyway, I enjoyed it and would watch it again purely for the gorgeous effects and Fassbender ( who does'nt blink I believe).

A highly enjoyable thought provoking sci fi romp that could have been so much better.

It's 3.5 stars out of 5

(I am currently watching the original Alien on channel 4, hmmmm, I think the old adage that less is more is definitely true in this case)
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.
Just look at em' now, already pullin' the plow. So quick to take to grain, like some old mule.

I didn't like this film much. It was an okay Sci-fi horror film. Reminiscent of all the other sci-fi horror stuff that Hollywood keeps churning out. But it was not what I feel I was promised. I was expecting art here. Something intellectual. For lack of a better term, this film wasn't pretentious enough for my liking. Instead this film stuck to the typical horror formula of introducing a bunch of detached characters that get offed faster and faster as the film works towards its climax. It sacrifices depth and introspection for cheap shocks and action scenes.

Don't get me wrong the movie is okay but it is so far removed from what it could have been. Considering how good it sounded in those promo mini-movies I am surprised at how low-brow it got in the end.

It also relies on the most idiotic leaps of logic and horror cliches ever.

Spoiler

I'd give this film 3 out 5 eye worms.

I hope that Ridley Scott releases a Directors cut with 30 extra minutes that fleshes out the crew and adds proper dialogue between the scientists and the crew.

Nobody speaks with one another. There is absolutely no chain of command or over view over who is doing what. At one point Dock crew are fighting a Zombie in the hangar, doctor lady is doing invasive surgery on herself and Mr Burns is rising from his tomb. All at the same time but there is absolutely no overlap here, nobody knows what the other group is doing. Nobody is reacting properly to the death of 2 crew members and another one being missing.

Nice post Apt but this in particular. During this part of the film I did wonder WTF was going on, Dr Shaw was far too polite to David (considering what had just happened to her) and when the captain walked in and basically explained how he'd worked everything out It felt really weak.I wasn't overawed by the script either it seemed too shallow for the subject matter imo. Interestingly though considering where the giant flappy squid alien thing came from, humans have a direct genetic link with the Aliens we all know and love.

Fuck.

I am agreeing with Apt about a movie, I need to go and lie down.

The thing I would have really liked in this film would have been professional scientists acting like they are actually the best in their field.

Remember that old film Sphere from around 98 or 99? That's what I wanted. Cool, calculating analyses of the situation, the threat, the cultural and scientific implications. Not the crew of Jersey Shore in Space.

Have the scientists have discussions with the dumber ship crew over lunch in a 20 minute long scene that fills in the audience on everything the could possibly need to know by having them translate hyper clever gibberish into layman's terms. Then have an Alien eat the ship.

Considering how clever the opening scene was as an alternative creation myth (well that's what I thought it was anyway), it was a bit science- lite. I was expecting a bit of a Q and A session after the Weyland holo screen scene. All we got was a sarcastic geology punk though.

What was Charlize Theron's purpose in this film though ? Seriously, she did sweet FA and even symbolically as Weyland's daughter I was not convinced. I thought she might have been another AI to keep tabs on David, but that went out the window when she shagged the captain. Although that said she would make a good pleasure model.

Getting tickets for the weekend to see this.

It's going to be at one of those theater-restaurant type places though - not sure it's a smart idea to eat dinner during this movie  :D
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Went to see it with the lady, enjoyed it even if I was a little disappointed with parts of it.

Spoiler

It looked great and had some excellent acting, it just had some iffy plot points. The Captain's got game, though.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

The lack of diagonal running was a killer it really was. Though as others have said Charlize Theron is yummy.

Im not a massive alien fan. Ive seen all the films on a fair few occasions but there are people on here better qualified to answer these questions.

If the Space Jockey/Engineer they find in the original film is sitting on the gun chair how does that fit with him getting up and chasing Noomi Rapace and getting killed by the giant Face Hugger?

I always thought that xenomorph evolution went Queen lays eggs-face huggers lay eggs in humans/creatues- Xenomorphs yet in this one its a giant facehugger that gets an Engineer that seem to give birth to a standard Xenomorph, unless thats a queen that just wasnt shown in the original? Can the normal Xenomorphs become queens after a time?

Was the black goo stuff simply alien DNA that was going to corrupt the humans or something more?
These questions may seem odd/obvious and its been a while since ive watched the original films but I remember thinking it didnt make that much sense especially the Space Jockey from the original being seated.
