Could you enlighten me more on the structure on the Malazan Army. Also, what is the Malazan Empire based on? There seems quite a strong Roman influence.

hmmmm it's a strange accident with that name, sir Erikson... few more questions...
1. am I just dumb or is there a language problem or are the Jhags a mix of Jaghuts and Tartheno-Toblakai?
2. is there any diffrence between Tartheno-Toblakai and Thelomen-Toblakai?
3. How did Icarium want to free Gothos while attacking Azath on Jhag Odhan? was Gothos stationed there in that time?
4. was/is Dassem immortal in a way? he was present at the chaining... and it seems from what Hood said that he is/was a very important person...
5. is the mortal plane also a warren of sort?
6. I want to add my voice to the beg for a glossary with some artwork... could you hire a painter/drawer/whoever to draw at least the main races (humans - Daru, Dal Honease, Falari, Seven Cities inhabbitants, Seguleh, Nathii, Elin - if you could compare these humans to some Earth peoples I would be VERY greatful, Barghast, Moranth, toblakai, Jaghut, T'lan Imass, Imass, Forkrul Assail, K'chain Che'malle, K'chain Nar'rhuk, Tiste Andii, Tiste Edur, Tiste Liosan....) and maybe some demons like Aptorian, Azalan, Ken'ryllah...

Dear Mr. Erikson, you are my idol, you are my God and I only swear by you.
I would like to know: is any of your personages created based on the personality of someone you know in real life(a friend, a member in your family, etc)?
Your T'lan Imass are the most innovative and original Undead ever. How did you come up with them?
Finally, a personal question Do your wife and children love your books?

Thankyou Mr Erikson for taking some time to answer some of our questions...it's really fantastic that fans such as myself have the opportunity to hear from you personally and ask questions regarding the books of our favourite author.

Will there be a 'Deck of dragons' card-game
forthcoming?
Or some kind of PC/RPG game?
You could, f.e. make an expansion pack to 'Medieval:total war' or some other strategy/adventure game with the maps and armies from the books.
Just hoping.

Apologies for the delay in the release of Memories of Ice -- it's all my fault, alas. The ms. turned out to be the longest yet.
As much as I'd lilke to respond at length to all your questions, I can't. I'm about 150 pages in the fourth book and once I get in this zone I don't really come back out until the thing's done and dusted. Nonetheless, I'll prattle on here and now for a while and hopefully cover a few things that might be of interest.
Um, where to start. First off, regards the maps, yes, Tulips was placed on the wrong side of the continent. Somewhere between my original map and the final copy things got mixed up and, mea cupla, went unnoticed until my friendly German translator queried it. By way of correction, the map in MOI has the name removed.
Your collective speculations are terrifying. Talk about making sure I stay on my toes! There's no doubt in my mind that writers should pay attention to what his or her readers are saying, and to take note of where confusion occurs and to make adjustments as needed. Even so, your diligence is damned intimidating, and I should add, don't stop! While I can't maintain a steady, regular presence on your site, I do indeed check it out when I can, and I'll try to drop in every month or so, time permitting. One of the dangers (for me) is that I end up using this forum to explain things I should be explaining in the novels -- in writing the books I have to proceed on the assumption that the reader knows only what's in them. That way I avoid more dangerous assumptions; the risk is I might start getting lazy, or I might end up mixing things up, and I don't want to do that. So, please, don't swamp me with questions! If something's already present in the published novels, and it's been collectively missed, I may fire an arrow in its direction (I've done that only once before and will likely maintain that ROF).
One other thing -- your speculations have been terrific, since they give me an idea of what events/scenes/characters had resonance for you. At the same time, I get a sense of which themes and subplots have pushed their way to the forefront, and that's done much to keep my radar sharp. So, thanks much.
Okay, post this as a topic and I'll take on the first wave of questions and respond within the next couple days.

is it really a totally unmentioned continent, or is it one of the continents mentioned at the back of GotM, under he Malazan empire, and where they have made inroads?

@ xanrn - actually, he says that they are 30 inches long - approximately 75 centimetres (if i remember my metric conversion tables correctly)
as to Mr. E, I would like to add my voice to the others regarding a bestiary type thing. I would ask (plead?) that if such an item were done, it sticks to generics, rather than illustrating specific characters - it sometimes seems a bit of a letdown comparing pictures to what you imagine in your head.
Oh, and a question - is the chain of dogs based on Napoleon's retreat from Russia in the winter, or am I reading too much into the "book of the fallen" connection?
