I've been playing Dying Light.
This game is much better than I dared hope. It's basically all the things that Dead Island failed at. The parkour is next to none I feel. The combat is still a bit too basic but you have so many other tools at your disposal. The character animation and dialogue is better, the story makes more sense, the character is pretty generic but remains sympathetic by showing him react somewhat realistically to the things he's asked to do.
I've put over 10 hours into the game yet it claims I am still only 12% into the game. Seems to be a lot of meat on these bones. I have yet to bother with night time adventuring. I am too scared of the hunting zombies. They freak me the fuck out. Maybe when I am stronger.
Wait until you go out at night for the first time (you're going to have to eventually), man, it's some scary shit. It's worth it though because your xp goes up much faster for eluding and fighting zombies (you can kill), etc.
Yep, Dying Light improves a lot of what was wrong with Dead Island. And man, the side quests are so much fun and not repetitive like Dead Island. I would even say doing the side quests are more fun and interesting then the story quests. The weapons are a lot better then in Dead Island too. You can only repair them 3 or 4 times but there's actually a good variety and the mods you get from the blueprints you find or are awarded with are awesome. There's nothing more satisfying then throwing water on a zombie and then hitting them with a weapon with a electrifying mod (dido with lighter fluid and fire mod weapon). Try to find the
Korek Machete, it is one of the best weapons in the game. Also, unlike Dead Island, the guns in Dying Light actually have some punch and do some powerful damage. I've pretty much completed all of the side quests and am working on completing the story missions.
I put another 10 hours into the game or so. I agree the side missions are great. Usually in these types of open world games, side quests are lower quality but Dying Light's side content has a lot of production value. The stories are hella dark too. Just rescued a woman who became a sex slave to get the medicine she needed to keep from turning. I keep walking into houses and seeing people who blew they brains out. Just blood splattered up walls and across floors.
I still don't go out at night but I have killed some of those night hunters. I picked up a Police Riffle and I've been standing at the edge of safe zones and blasting zombies. Great XP from that.
Now that guns have become more prevalent I've found it's completely changed the way I approach human situations. A guy with a riffle can kill me in 2 seconds from a hundred meters away. Pretty scary.
I found a blueprint for "natural medkits" yesterday which has helped a lot. Before I was scavenging for alcohol constantly, now I can use the much more prevalent herbs to make lots of medkits. Makes me a lot more daring.
