I finished Shadowrun Returns a couple of weeks ago and was planning on going back to play XCOM: Enemy Within again when I saw that Xenonauts was on sale on Steam. Been meaning to get it for ages and it was impossible to pass by for £9. So I bought it, and now I'm completely addicted. Much as I loved the Firaxis Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within games, they didn't quite scratch the itch I had for the original X-COM (hyphenated!) games, i.e. UFO Enemy Unknown (as it was called in the UK) and X-COM Terror from the Deep. Xenonauts is definitely fitting the bill, though. I lost most of last weekend to it, which hasn't happened to me with a game for years.

Also picked up Wasteland 2 half price on Steam last weekend, although I won't be going anywhere near that until I've finished Xenonauts.

I really need to play Xenonauts. It's been sitting on my GOG shelf for ages.

I finished it (well, my first play-through) a couple of days ago. I thought it was great Posted Image

I was torn between starting Wasteland 2 next, or one of the Legend of Grimrock games - as I got both of those in a Steam sale last weekend - but I decided to go with Wasteland 2 as I bought it first. The party creation process gave me a headache (so many stats and skills!) but I'm enjoying the game so far.

I've been playing Dying Light.

This game is much better than I dared hope. It's basically all the things that Dead Island failed at. The parkour is next to none I feel. The combat is still a bit too basic but you have so many other tools at your disposal. The character animation and dialogue is better, the story makes more sense, the character is pretty generic but remains sympathetic by showing him react somewhat realistically to the things he's asked to do.

I've put over 10 hours into the game yet it claims I am still only 12% into the game. Seems to be a lot of meat on these bones. I have yet to bother with night time adventuring. I am too scared of the hunting zombies. They freak me the fuck out. Maybe when I am stronger.

Wait until you go out at night for the first time (you're going to have to eventually), man, it's some scary shit. It's worth it though because your xp goes up much faster for eluding and fighting zombies (you can kill), etc.

Yep, Dying Light improves a lot of what was wrong with Dead Island. And man, the side quests are so much fun and not repetitive like Dead Island. I would even say doing the side quests are more fun and interesting then the story quests. The weapons are a lot better then in Dead Island too. You can only repair them 3 or 4 times but there's actually a good variety and the mods you get from the blueprints you find or are awarded with are awesome. There's nothing more satisfying then throwing water on a zombie and then hitting them with a weapon with a electrifying mod (dido with lighter fluid and fire mod weapon). Try to find the Korek Machete, it is one of the best weapons in the game. Also, unlike Dead Island, the guns in Dying Light actually have some punch and do some powerful damage. I've pretty much completed all of the side quests and am working on completing the story missions.

I put another 10 hours into the game or so. I agree the side missions are great. Usually in these types of open world games, side quests are lower quality but Dying Light's side content has a lot of production value. The stories are hella dark too. Just rescued a woman who became a sex slave to get the medicine she needed to keep from turning. I keep walking into houses and seeing people who blew they brains out. Just blood splattered up walls and across floors.

I still don't go out at night but I have killed some of those night hunters. I picked up a Police Riffle and I've been standing at the edge of safe zones and blasting zombies. Great XP from that.

Now that guns have become more prevalent I've found it's completely changed the way I approach human situations. A guy with a riffle can kill me in 2 seconds from a hundred meters away. Pretty scary.

I found a blueprint for "natural medkits" yesterday which has helped a lot. Before I was scavenging for alcohol constantly, now I can use the much more prevalent herbs to make lots of medkits. Makes me a lot more daring.

You'll need those medkits when you have to scale the bridge at night and collect light bulbs for a side mission.Posted Image

There's also some cool easter eggs in the game. I found the loot cave that pokes fun at Destiny. And there's supposed to be an area down in the concrete tunnels that is a Super Mario Brothers easter egg.

I've just got that too - currently downloading from Steam . . . . Wasteland 2 might have to take a back seat for a while, much as I'm enjoying it!

I circumvented that problem. I climbed all the way to the top of the bridge during the day and used the sleeping bag to jump to night. It was more stressful when I had to go the quarantine camp on the outer bridge chunk, it was getting dark and I frantically trying to find a gadget. I ended up crafting a bunch of grenades and chucked them into the middle of the zombies. Pretty sweet seeing 800 point popping up a dozen times in a row, then running of the side of the bridge and swimming to safety.

I think the game could do with some water zombie variants. Just to make you feel complete paranoid at all times.

Just got to the second part of the city. Holy shit, I thought I was nearly done and then "Tadaaa! You're only half way done!". There really is a shit ton of content in this game.

I did the bridge mission at night by taking flares with me to scare away the hunters and just keeping an eye on the mini map to make sure I stayed out of their cone of site. Having the night vision potion helped immensely too because you don't have to alert them by having your flashlight on. So I make it up the bridge and open that one door only to be greeted right at the door by an exploding zombie. Back to the safe zone and starting over. Damn that pissed me off.

Yeah, there's a lot of content in the game. I think I've only done one of the challenges where you race or have to collect items to beat the clock. I have cleared out all of the sub-areas (like the market and tunnel, etc.) though. Those are pretty damn harrowing.

Is anyone else playing it in co-op? IMO the only way to play Dying Light long-term. Really adds to that survivors-working-together feeling.

I haven't played co-op yet. I want to finish the story first, then I will give it a try. What about "be the zombie" mode? Anyone try that yet? I've not tried it yet, but will once I finish the story.

I had the co-op on for a little while but it gets confusing because I don't have a mic. I am not sure if there is some filter on the push to talk but the players I invited to my game sounded like they were talking through water. One of them was singing some children's song. That was more scary then the zombies.

It was funny to see the different approaches to the combat. I try to stay low key and quickly dispatch groups of zombies. One guy I was with just opened up on a group of zombies withe automatic riffle. Which pulled in more zombies, which he then threw handgrenades at. THEN it started to get nuts. Had to get on top of a van and began chucking molotows in every direction.

Oh, I normally co-op with people I know and with comms. XD

But it's great that you can approach the game in different ways like that.

And no, I haven't tried that Be The Zombie mode either. Will report back if I give it a go this weekend.

So the XBL free games are looking pretty decent this month.

Meanwhile here's me fumbling with fighting games and trying to work out how I can actually get passably good with long combos.

It is rather lovely! I've been playing it most of the morning . . . Had to try both a Chanter and a Cipher before settling on the latter. What did you go for? :D

Rogue for now, because I was warned you can't pick one up as an NPC (clearly the BG2 "no pure thief" thing has stuck around) but I am considering starting a Chanter - how are you finding it? Posted Image

Likewise, but I might start over with a slightly more interesting playstyle.
And I have a sneaking suspicion that my graphic card is close to being fried :D

edit: not by this game, but in general.

Oh right, didn't know about the Rogue. I was pretty determined to play a class that I hadn't played before, so I went with a Cipher in the end :D He can cast some interesting spells already and he's pretty handy with a sword. Time will tell, though. I played a Chanter through the opening sequence and had her summoning skeletons, which was fun, but it took a while into each fight before she could do that. I suspect I was doing it wrong :D
