This is my badass great grand uncle Sadao returning to Japan from Machuria in the 1930's I think.

Check out the hat, and the cutlass....at least it looks like a cutlass...not sure.

Depending on when the pic was taken, it is either most likely a kyu gunto (western style forged saberlike weapon) or The New Army sword (shin gunto), used from 1935 onwards. If an officer, it was a type 94, if an NCO, type 95 (machine produced). Unless this was a souvenir, of course.

I didn't know that, I wiki'd it.
