Just finished reading this - in my opinion this book is probably only bettered by tDtCB.

Off topic, i seem to remember seeing on the Three Seas Forum YEARS ago a language geneaology. I also think I read somewhere that this was printed in some editions of tTT. If anyone could post a link, it would be appreciated.

Hi all, I apologize if this is out of place - clearly, this is my first post on the Malazan forums. While I applaud Erikson's work with the Malazan: Book of the Fallen, I thought I would let those of you who are Bakker fans that we've been building an online community again at The Second Apocalypse. I invite everyone interested to join and post. Again, I apologize I'm not here doing more the Malazan community at this time.

Cheers.

not at all, we have other authors forums for a reason, and i'm glad that the fan-base is getting more active since i've always felt a lack in that area. see you there.

The sample stuff from UC (this one and the other one) have been bananas. Just really different stuff.

So is he putting the full excerpt (the bigger one that will come pre-publication) on Pat's Fantasy Hotlist? Or a different blogger?

Edit: Yes, it will be on PFH. From his page featuring this excerpt:

Now that the third book is coming out I might start this second trilogy. I'm excited because of the amount of books due out over the next few months.

The Unholy Consult, WoT, Cold Days, Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm (something I want to read to my neice and nephew), The Alloy of Law (Mistborn!!) are the ones I'm thinking of. Now some of those include a re read of the series which means some epic reading to come!!

Cause, listen to me carefully...

The author's name is Patrick Lee. The books are, in order, THE BREACH, GHOST COUNTRY and DEEP SKY.

All are in mmpb and i'm pretty sure e-read.

Go get them. Go get them now.

I guarantee these will fill you with holyfucknuts slathered in wowsauce while you're waiting for these other books.

Bakker posted an update of a sort on Three Pound Brain on Wednesday which appears to confirmthat we will probably be waiting quite a while for The Unholy Consult:

"This is another repost, this one from 2012/07/04. I like it I think because of the way it makes the informatic stakes of the hard problem so vivid. I do have some new posts in the works, but Golgotterath has been gobbling up more and more of my creative energy of late. For those of you sending off-topic comments asking about a publication date for The Unholy Consult, all I can do is repeat what I’ve been saying for quite some time now: You’ll know when I know! The book is pretty much writing itself through me at this point, and from the standpoint of making good on the promise of this series, I think this is far and away the best way to proceed. It will be done when it tells me it’s done. I would rather frustrate you all with an extended wait than betray the series. If you want me to write faster, cut me cheques, shame illegal downloaders, or simply thump the tub as loud as you can online and in print. So long as The Second Apocalypse remains a cult enterprise, I simply have to continue working on completing my PhD."

Well, late to the party, but I finally read this.

Bakker is trenchant in his refusal to make it easy for the reader to grasp what the hell is going on. And hoo boy is he relentlessly grim. Still, I continue to find his work utterly fascinating.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

horrified fascination is the emotion i feel most strongly reading bakker's work. after kellhus says, "we shall eat sranc," i kicked myself because of course they have to. it was inevitable from the start. but still, i didn't want to admit it, and it horrified me. immediately i start thinking that sranc meat is gonna make them all go stark raving mad, because bakker would do something deranged like that to his characters.

Anyone else read Blood Meridian and notice that Kosoter and Cleric are clearly tributes to Glanton and the Judge? Not to mention that the Skin Eaters and Glanton Gang are both scalper gangs.

I love, love Blood Meridian, but I had not made that connection until you said it. Thank you, it is a great parallel and a fitting one for the subject matter.
