Yeah, the Vassal program seems fairly easy now that I've played around with it. The first time playing might be a little clumsy as we need to find a good rythm, but I think it could be a good game to play. I actually think that more, but quicker decisions will make it a faster game than Diplomacy.

I'm going to run it without playing, as I've not found a good way to deal with the few hidden tokens that each player holds without revealing them to myself as I mod the game. I'm sure I'll get some sort of inspiration as I get more used to the whole setting though.

Since battles happen at the the end of each of the 9 rounds I figure that research and upgrade can be done together as two actions in one.

Explore, Construction and Movement have to be kept seperate however as those actions can influence other players as they are performed.

The question, I suppose is how big a game we should allow and when we should try to run the thing.

I'll play - don't have time for mafia nowadays but should be able to manage Eclipse.

Isn't it just the reputation tiles that are hidden? We could just play with them being public.

Okay, so I've been meaning to link to this since this thread started, and I was constantly surprised that no-one beat me to the punch.

Tabletop
It's a show on Geek and Sundry, a youtube channel started and run by Felicia Day. The host of the show is Wil Wheaton, and every episode is him and three other guests playing some sort of "board game" (there are plenty without boards etc, that just gives the right idea).

They've had some amusing guests and hilarious episodes. But they've also had episodes on a fair number of the games listed in this thread.
Ticket to Ride
Settlers of Catan
Castle Panic
So on and so forth.

It's a good place to hear about games you'd never heard of (like those ones listed, which I watched just before this thread started), and to see how games you have heard of play.

I hope you enjoy :)

Yeah, I've been watching most of Tabletop as it has come out. Alas, though I enjoy the lighter kinds of boardgames, my true passion -if you can call it that- is the longer lasting ones.

So I just got to try out Clash of Cultures, a 2-4 player hours long strategy game quite reminescent of Civilization (the computer game).

It's an incredibly elegant game and loads of fun. I advice anyone who have the chance to try it out.

Been playing a lot of Ticket to Ride during the winter months as it is the gf's favorite. Nice and elegant design but ultimately a bit predictable.

And not ideal for just 2 players I would have thought?

Yes and no. Because of the double routes becoming singular, you can still create some choke points.

It is all in all less screwy, but on the plus side, the Seattle - Miami tickets (or equivalent) drawn at the game's start don't automatically become a lost game due to minus points. It is a scoring rush, where the tactical element is more about when you build for the longest route or burn through trains for finishing the game, or about getting a late game hand of extra tickets.

Wait, the long routes are automatically minus points? What sort of games are you playing? My experience is that drawing the big ones provides the best chance of victory.

If you play with 5, going from San Fran to Miami (and equivalents) is rather tough to do (ok, ok, 'automatic' is a bit of an overstatement :D, but definately very tough). We have had multiple games with friends where one of us needed a crucial 6 wagon route, which was then taken before they could build it, and where other players took 2/3/4 train-length routes that were necessary for the back-up route, leaving the unlucky player with 20 committed wagons and a route they can't complete.

And since any uncompleted ticket is a loss of the points on it, well... -20 or so is usually a big enough loss to put you in last place or so. Likewise, if your three starting tickets are all big and all in different directions and you have to keep 2, one is likely to result in a malus.

So Tapper in Europe plays the North America Ticket to Ride and I in NA play the Euro Ticket to Ride? :(

It is the gf's favorite game, so when I got it for her I had delved a tiny bit into the differences. I didn't really like the station additions to the Euro TtR as they make blockades much less effective, so I got her the NA version :(.

Sarah and I have been playing a few games of Twilight Struggle. It's an incredible game, and is definitely something one can play with the SO. Not too expensive either, and especially great for those of us who enjoy modern history.

I've actually never used the stations. My sister taught it to me and she doesn't use them, so I never do. It works fine with just ignoring them. What are the other differences? Does the NA version have tunnels or ferries? (I hate the tunnels and will almost never go for them, even though your odds of having to play extra cards is very low).

No tunnels, no ferries.
Basically, I like using all components of a game, or at the least trying them all. The designers added stations I think partly to prevend players from blockading one another. Perhaps family friendly, but not so cool for competition.

Hmm. You're missing out a bit, then :D Tunnels are great, they make it harder for someone to just grab all the really long grey connections scattered around the board and get tons of points just from long connections and a couple really short routes. It is still possible to do, but takes a little bit longer to start doing it at the start. Ferries are great for making the high-demand short grey connections a little pricier.

I'll have to try stations sometime and let you know what I think. On the one hand, it seems like the busiest connections in busy areas like france/UK/germany are all double-connections anyways, so it is hard to block them anyways and therefore stations seem pointless, but on the other hand spain and russia are maddeningly easy to seal off.

Has anyone tried any of the other ticket to ride maps, like the India one?

I've recently acquired risk legacy, which I have been very impressed by.

The game uses a variation on the normal risk rules (involving capturing HQs and other strategies to earn stars) as a result the game generally lasts around an hour, and doesn't turn into the usual risk marathons. The main drawing point of the game however is that the board, the rules and even the mechanics of the game change each time you play, with the actions you take in each game permanently affecting the next one, as you reveal new rules, name continents and found cities. The gradual reveal of new rules quite dramatically changes the game keeping it fresh and fun. Highly recommended, even if you don't like normal risk.
