Looking for some pointers for a new 5E game we're running soon. I'm a PC in this, not DM.

So, I want to play a character whose sole goal in life is to become so strong he can punch a mountain down, and his ultimate aim is to wrestle a dragon into submission. Big, and beefy.

So I've picked that he's a Goliath and that he fights without armour or weapons. However monk seems quite lacklustre for grappler type characters.

My DM is absolutely fine with me doing something like a monk who uses STR instead of DEX for monk checks (think muscle wizard). Monk makes the most sense in terms of the unarmed and unarmoured aspects, but then fighter and barbarian both look pretty appealing for it.

Any ideas?

Look up the Pugilist homebrew class - should be exactly what you're looking for! It's like a monk that runs on STR, and has lots of bonuses to grappling and the like.

YES. Let's fucking throw some hoes.

OK, so the character is come together.

He is named Dun-Beru Bearthrower. He speaks in true, manly Soviet accent at all times. His missions in life are three: to suplex a dragon, to level a mountain with one punch, and to become the strongest in all the land.

One of our other players is running an orc bard who uses bodybuilding poses to give inspiration (yes, it's one of THOSE campaigns). So I expect to be using my reaction to counter pose at him a lot. YES MUSCLE

It’s Aliens.. well your on a ship and have to survive, well potentially.

I’m a big thematic driven player, but I usually like economic, 4x and then worker placement in that order.

Aliens ( 3 different game plays) can kill you ...
A potential traitor element.. this could extend out to Multiple characters.
The ship can blow up through malfunctions and fire
It can be redirected away from earth
You could have to survive a certain way ( secret objective)
You could have to keep everyone alive ( secret objective)
You could have to keep the ship alive... etc

It’s edges out and replaced Battlestar Galatica ever so slightly for me.

Anyone here play Munchkin? I backed a couple of Kickstarters earlier this year and accidentally doubled-up on some add-ons (4 of them). PM me if interested.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Munchkin is a great 20 minute game... Unfortunately it usually takes a lot longer!

I am so tempted to go all in on Europa Universalis on kickstarter, but I already have too many games, including two kickstarters I'm getting next year.

Laura would be very annoyed.

But it looks like so much fun!

Is that related to the apparently enormously long and complicated video game?

Yes, whcih was again based on an old and complicated board game.

I've played Civilization the video game and Civilization the board game and didn't like the board game very much. The mechanics of it were weird, things didn't tie in together very well, and it didn't really feel like the video game much either. EU is hopefully a better "port" ?

It looks really really good. Like an old school grand strategy game but with all that we've learned from the last two decades of game design. I had to back it in the end, and am waiting in excitement for next fall :D

Europa Universalis is funded and all is well. I look forwards to some grand strategy with the great powers of renaissance Europe.

Don’t know if it’s too late but the latest Unearthed Arcana has some updates on unarmed fighting.

Hello, anyone has any reccos for card/board games for a 12 year old?

Based on the reccos already listed here I'd gotten my sister Takenoko (expansion included) and Ticket to Ride (Europe) in previous years and everyone enjoys them

I've already got her Citadels this year (really curious to play this after more than 10 years since I last have) but parents want to get her something else too so asked me for recco so in turn here I am

I wanted to get Sankt Petersburg because I remember really liking it when I was a kid but I can't find it available anywhere

There's the classics like Catan and Carcassonne and whatnot but would like to hear about some less commercially successful game too

And personally would prefer games that are enjoyable enough with 2-3 players because she usually doesn't get more players than that, but I figure some of you would be asking the same question in a few years time so let's hear the reccos all

I like Smash Up a lot. Looks like it was mentioned back in this thread in 2013/2015.

Mix and match various factions (Ninjas, Zombies, Dinosaurs, Aliens, etc. and more in expansions) and fight for control of bases. Relatively simple mechanics for a Deck Building Game, plus the age range & number of players sounds right.

Imperial Settlers might work. It's for age 10+ and it contains enough strategic optimization to remain fun as she grows and plays it more often. Word of warning: the Atlantis expansion really slows the early game down (the Atlantis player plays a reversed game, essentially) and makes all players wait for 10+ minutes while the Atlantis player finishes turn 1-2.

Machi Koro is a pretty okay dice roller, but it might be boring for grown-ups.
