There a young Paran is standing above the fires and the fray with Whiskeyjack (and briefly, Fiddler.) I've read comments from SE where he says that the imagery was deliberate - something about the three of them being about to descend into the chaos, but for the moment, they're above it.

In the opening of tCG, Paran is once more standing over everything - the battlefield before him, his troops below him, the burning throne in the courtyard behind him (maybe it's more significant thematically than as a plot device - Laseen's dead, order has dissolved, etc) - and presumably about to descend into it at some point in what's to come. Only now he's alone.

s would fit well with hetan et al's comments that there is an amazing amount of foreshadowing throughout the entire series

I like the idea of it but i think Paran might be one of those character that Pat said wouldnt play a mjor part atleast in realtime. Im unsure given that we see Karsa and Paran but one of them will not have a large role. the more I think about it seems likely Karsa wont as the only place hed reaaly go is the Laeaderon plateau

Nah, I think Karsa will be the one who doesn't show up in real time. I think the character we expected to play a big role and only shows up for a few pages, will be Tayschrenn. I really think Paran will have a lot of screen time in this one.

@Tiam, I might have agreed prior to the excerpt, but what we saw of Paran there seals it for me that he'll get a lot of stage time in the final volume. Wheelin' and dealin' with Shadowthrone? Check. Having a face-off with FAs? Check. Possibly sitting right at the heart of the upcoming convergence? Check. All this - taken with the various other threads of his story that haven't been resolved yet - makes me very, very confident he's going to play a major part.

I know what you mean it seemed likely Paran was the 'big player' that wasnt going to appear until the excerpt came out. I remember thinking I hope Paran meets up with Tavore which it seems they might given ST comments.

what is odd is the nature of Karsa appearance. If thats all we get why do we even get it? Hes not gonna come from Darujhistan to Kolanse so it seems odd to include him at all. I, like a few on the board, were thinking Karsa was now ICEs project in 'Ball, Stick, Chair' or whatever that terrible title is. I hope Karsa doesnt appear as it seems he should get back to his goal of destroying civilisation with his Teblor.

It's entirely possible that Karsa could play a key role in a plotline parallel to the Kolanse one. Having him show up in chapter one doesn't make much sense if he's not going to be part of the novel, yet it would be beyond silly to have him show up on Kolanse, given that he just left that continent a couple of books ago.

So did Nimander and it looks like he is heading back now. Karsa can do that too.

I doubt Nimander will go to Kolanse. More likely that he will take his Andii home to Kharkanas to be reunited with the Shake. Maybe Silchas Ruin will go back too and have a big Andii party.
