Eventually, all your media, plus identification, financial stuff, telephone, etc. will be an iKindle-Chip/Phone thingy implanted under the skin of your hand or forehead. It will allow the machines to hunt you down more efficiently and wipe you out when they decide to take over.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I have a Kindle 3 and e-ink is the best. I doubt I'd ever do a touchscreen, backlit device for reading for the same reason CF mentioned.

That said, My girlfriends sister is getting a Kindle Fire for Christmas, and I'm curious to see how it looks.

They won't even need to hunt us down. They will wirelessly activate the Kill Switch that accidentally got designed into the chips and fry our brains!

I probably read as much off the kindle app on my phone as what I do on my kindle. E-ink and LCD both have their disadvantages, although I think e-ink comes out slightly ahead due to the fantastic battery life. If I somehow ended up with a tablet like a kindle fire or a galaxy tab I would probably read a fair amount on it, but I can't see myself buying a tablet, especially not to use primarily as an ereader.

The only problem I have with my kindle is that some of the books I download come with annoying errors in the text.

I'm reading 'Blood Oath' at the moment, and I'm really enjoying it so far, except that ev-ery few para-graphs, occ-asional words get split into two for no reason. It can get irri-tating and distracting. If it was a hard copy of a book, I would have taken it back.

My kindle version of 'The Chronicles of the Black Company' was also badly converted, with punctuation missing so sentences ran into each other. You kind of get used to it, but it should be fixed, not tolerated.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

The first of the big-market-share companies that makes a tablet with LCD on one side and E-ink on the other will make bazillions. Seriously, I would buy that shit in a heartbeat. LCD with multitouch screen for browsing, apps, movies, music and games, then flip a switch, turn it over and the LCD screen is mirrored to the E-ink for reading. Fuck. Yes. Throw in 3G, Wifi, USB port (or maybe SD card slot) and you've got yourself a real winner.

I don't feel like that product is really out of reach. My phone has all that except the e-ink right now. Most of the tablets on the market have all that except the e-ink. It isn't that much of a stretch to add the extra display and necessary digital magery to get the thing to mirror between screens.

I see this too. Massive sections of text converted to all caps and figure captions attached to incorrect figures. Stupid editing mistakes for the most part, though I haven't run into the improperly-placed hyphenation as yet.

They have a long way to go with editorial quality. I'm willing to tolerate it for awhile until the medium becomes more mainstream and publishing moves to majority e-book format. If they don't have most of these issues sorted in a few years though there will be outcry and things will be fixed. I'm pretty confident in that.

http://www.pcworld.c...id_display.html

after a quick web search I realize I'm not the only one who's thought of this.

This apple idea of the intelligent hybrid screen that switches back and forth at will is fucking cool and way better than my idea. It might even convince me to buy an apple product if they pull it off....or at the very least buy when an android version comes out.

as long as it has page turn buttons.

EDIT: The techies are waaaaaay ahead of me it seems. THIS looks sweet.

I remember there was a big fuss about that tech when it was first announced and some sort of tablet called the Adam by NotionInk or something similar which had a lot of hype but didn't make much of a splash when it eventually came out.

As much as I would love a device that can change from e-ink to LCD and back, I just don't think there is enough of a demand for such a device for it to be able to capture a profitable market share. As it is tablets have to occupy a bit of a murky position somewhere between netbooks and smartphones and it's really only Apple's massive marketing machine that managed to get them kicked off when they launched the iPad. To try and generate another niche inside that niche doesn't seem like it would work that well. The things that make tablets poor ereaders - screen glare and poor battery life - are things that you need to deal with for any use of a tablet, not just to use it as an ereader. So someone would have to invest a lot of time and money to create something that still has all the flaws of a tablet when used as a tablet, costs more than a normal tablet and is marketed at a significantly smaller segment of an already cramped market base.

That's why I said in my original post RE the dual screen that the "first of the big market share companies to come out with....."

Some company called NotionInk that nobody's heard of has no chance of getting into the market for tablets, e-readers or otherwise right now. If Apple came out with a dual-purpose screen, you can bet people would throng to it...and probably would never realize apple didn't invent it....and probably somehow claim Jobs was responsible even after he died (but that's beside the point)

Or possibly use this type of tech on the Kindle Fire 2 whenever that comes out. Something already marketed as an e-reader could benefit from having a dual screen. The idea is that when you switch to e-ink mode you immediately lose the drawbacks of the tablet, namely the poor battery life and screen glare.

I dunno...I figure it's still not far off. If Amazon or apple did it right now people would buy it. No question.

LOVE this upgrade. Does kindle allow you to skype? I've been gambling on reading/skyping in the bath for years, and I'm sure my number is about to come up.

You skype in the bath? Is this like a sexy skype thing?

For skyping in the bath Id also have to recommend waterproof phones. There are loads these days.

All skyping is sexy. Just look at the name: skype. Sexiest word in the English language.
