From a story writing stand point, especially when looking at what AC1 was trying to achieve, AC2 and Brotherhood were terrible games. I have a hard time believing that a team of competent story writers put that together and were satisfied with the finished product. Either the people who put the story together forgot what the story was actually supposed to be about/didn't really give a shit or somebody higher up said "No, this is too complicated for the general public, make it dumber. And throw in some escort missions, bitches love escort missions".

Maybe it is just the problem of a would be story writer seeing all the things that could have been done better. I don't know. But I do know that the people who say that AC1 was a terrible game and AC2 a great game need to be beaten with a wet trout.

I liked the AC2 storyline purely for how utterly ridiculous it was. I'm a huge Illuminatus! fan, and whether intentionally or not, the sheer silliness of the backstory/glyphs stuff ending with the solar flares of doom revelation made it surreally brilliant - and black and white as it was, I found the Ezio storyline to be a fairly competent revenge story, which I do have something of a soft spot for. AC1's was alright; frankly, I didn't find it to be well-written enough to develop what could have been good themes very well (and my overriding memory of it is of desperately trying to find a way to break free of the invisible walls while Al-Mualim droned endlessly about, like, free will n shit), with the repetitiveness of its beating you over the head matched only by the repetitiveness of the gameplay. It was harder, which is good, but I felt like I could have quit the game after the first assassination, imagining it over and over in my head with differently-coloured walls and not missed anything save the terribly dull final gauntlet.

I wouldn't call either game great by any measure, but I'd give AC2 a solid 7/10 for improving in most areas. Yet to get around to Brotherhood, but more of the same will scratch that itch long enough to tide me over to AC3. Bring back the possibility of actually dying (I played AC2 with a trainer that makes you die in two hits and only ever used a weak dagger. I died once) and have a scene where Desmond parachutes into a Bilderberg Group meeting in time to ruin their ritual and prevent them from summoning Cthulhu, and I'll be pretty content.

Yeah, I never got people who disliked the story in AC1....I loved the shit out of that game...even with the buggy game mechanics and repetitive gameplay.

I'm not far into AC2 and its the story so I can't comment yet.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about then yes, there's only three. The other assassins aren't even needed though, except to create an army of blonde female assassin ninjas.

So what do you think? Personally I was hoping for an Asian setting but we all knew the American and French Revolutions were obvious choices.

I really hope they get back to the conspiracy stories that are the games skeleton and not that stupid and shallow vengence bullshit going in between the Auditores and Borgias

The Assassin's Creed games are stupid. Don't get me wrong, I love AC2 and Brotherhood. They give you a lot to explore, look really nice, and keep you occupied with all sorts of side content. That said, they're incredibly stupid.

The sci-fi conceit that connects all the games isn't very good, and its execution is laughable. Every major figure in history possessed a magic doodad and secret societies and blah blah. Even if you go along for the ride, it's not told very well at all. A central story is teased through impressionistic glimpses and moments of seemingly important posturing, but that story is never actually told, because doing so would require some forward movement that would only pay off with excellent writing.

So we have fun running around and stabbing people in neat settings, trying not to think too hard about all the coincidences we're supposed to be amazed by and all the lazy historic landmarks that the series awkwardly gropes. We put up with all the embarrassing shallow video game character melodrama because it's outweighed by the gameplay. And, really, as long as the games are competently made (which isn't a sure thing following Revelations) that's fine.

Now we know that the inevitable Assassin's Creed III will be set in America during the Revolutionary War. I'll be there on day one with everyone else, but in the meantime how about some predictions?
  • You will calmly walk through a full scale battle, pushing soldiers from both sides out of your way as you remain undetected, magically cloaked by a small cluster of turkeys.
  • The collectibles in this game will be Ben Franklin's missing kites. You will discover them on rooftops and tree branches, held in place by tangled strings with keys dangling from the end.
  • After assassinating a corrupt American, you will tread on a Don't Tread On Me flag. Symbolism.
  • You will witness the Boston Tea Party firsthand, but will not be able to control your character. One of the event's victims will be someone you care about.
  • A cinematic fight (literally a cinematic) will leave a crack in the Liberty Bell.
  • You will scan glowy conspiracy matrix code that has been hidden on the Declaration Of Independence. Also, you might have to find pages of "the real" articles of confederation as another collectible.
  • Freemasons did everything. Also, computers and magic.
  • A drummer boy will rotate his drum, revealing the bottom to be the barrel of a small cannon. The piper next to him will adjust his instrument slightly, revealing it to be a blowdart gun.
  • You will discover that Benedict Arnold was not a traitor, but a patsy that had been turned on by the Templars.
  • After speaking with the chief of a Native American tribe, you will partake in a hallucinatory ritual that will blend the spiritual world with flashes of sci-fi computer bullshit. This will lead you to discover that the hawk noise which follows the climbing of a vantage point is actually the sound of your bloodline's spirit animal.
  • Instead of gold, you will scour the game world for hidden chests filled with freedom.
  • One mission will require you to sneak aboard a ship, using the Boston Tea Party as a distraction.

Yeah, saw this yesterday. Disappointed for two main reasons; setting (though as you say, expected) and; again, expected, but c'mon...totally should have had a female lead. *sigh*

I'm sure it will be more of the same fun Highly Visible Ninja format, but tbh I'm kinda getting burnt out on that, and I haven't even played Revelations and Brotherhood to completion. O.o

As far as I recall of the 6 statues down in Ezio's secret vault, only the Asian chick was female. So if they ever go to China, we might get a female protagonist there.

I haven't played "Revelations" yet so I don't know what they did with the over arching plot but it's my understanding that they have no problems with making 10 more Assassin's Creed games. They have the material, it's just a question whether or not they need to create another character in who's head it can take place.

Really? I always heard them talking about the trilogy as being it's own thing. I get that there will undoubtedly be more games, and more spin-off media (it's a franchise now, after all) but this is still the last in this line of games. Just a matter of time, sure, but how long? XD

I get what you're saying, and knowing Ubi I can see them milking it for all it's worth, I was just pretty sure it was meant to be 3 full games and that closes Desmond's story (which pretty much means the series as it stands)?

Yes.

I haven't played Revelations but Brotherhood is an entirely new chapter in the story. It's not a very good story, but the game world is even bigger than the second game and they improved and added a lot of content. And it progresses the Desmond storyline to the point where I am more interested in what Desmond is up to than the Ezio storyline.

Playing Brotherhood was what burned me out on the series. It was 2 again, except with more filler, even less challenge and a slightly more interesting Desmond plot. I did really like 2 and had high hopes for the series expanding on its improvements, but it seems to have worked itself into a terrible rut. The only thing that would reignite my interest at this point would have been a 3 set in Victorian London or Edinburgh. But helping the FREEDOM LOVING AMERICAN ASSASSINS battle the EVIL IMPERIALIST BRITISH TEMPLARS takes priority, I guess.

Huh. I'd kind of had enough after Brotherhood, but some kindly soul bought me Revelations for Christmas.

And, as suspected, the 1st half hour was 'cutscene, 30 seconds of walking to next plot point, cutscene, walk to next plot point by following arrows to big spot on map, cue cutscene... I played an annoying cart-chase minigame, and then I got bored and turned it off.

I want to check it out further, and actually make it into the city, but I really hate the way these games have to show every objective and guide you there with few dangers or challenges. They undoubtedly have big, beautiful environments, but it all seems strangely linear, and the only use for exploration is to open the map and pick up flags.

Does this one get any better?

After playing AC1 for one evening I decided to follow a coworker's advice and just went straight to AC2. It's fabulous.
