Ach! I can only play for about fifteen minutes at a time this evening before I start lagging really badly. Have no idea why though.

My flooring and walls are complete, I'm starting to make the glass now...

Building some sort of entrance and then expanding underground will come after.

Damn why is there no such thing as a small cave system in this game?

The last couple of days I've been doing nothing but exploring the cave I found under my submarine trench. It just keeps branching out and out and out.

I just dug my way up through the sea bed out of curiosity and when I surfaced I was far out to sea. Good thing I can navigate by the lava tower. I have now made the hole in the sea bed my new cave entrance (for when I eventually seal of the original entrance) and built a small work area on the surface above the hole. I've got a work bench, couple of chests and a furnace. I can do all my crafting out here without having to run/sail all the way back home for new tools and unloading.

Bucket of water. It's the Zelda pack, so it replaces everything that it can with alternatives from the Zelda games.

God, this game is ridiculously addicting even though I'm terrible at it. I really just need to start staying put during the night. That, and I should probably make a house near the spawn point or put up some signs, because I can never find my way around.

I've cocked up the plans for my roof.

my problem is that I don't start with a plan from the get go. I sort of wing it as I discover how things are. The result is mismatched towers and labyrinths of twisting tunnels.

I didn't take into account that while my central pillar is circular, my outer walls are actually an oval. That makes building a roof increadibly difficult, as you may be able to see:

Any ideas on how I can get those roof sections to meet? Be as elaborate as you like as it needs to look good too!

I have some lava on top.

I've now channelled it into 3 defensive streams covering two sides, while waterfalls cover the other two.

(yes, I have a lot of lame shit in my inventory, as I was on the way back from one of those trips where you accidentally lose all your stuff... what the hell can you do with eggs, anyway?

I've got a couple of narrow bridges for access, and use a ladder to access an internal stairway. Next plan is to build a cave with a dock, so I can go out by water - best way to hunt for reeds without getting bothered.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Nice house! I have a cave-harbour too, though it only leads to a lake...I may make a river that leads to the sea though.

Also on that note, outside my cave there are some irritating currents that make trying to get in using a boat very difficult. The water is level, so it''s not like I need to level out the water to make the currents disappear or anything. Are there any other ways of calming the water? I suppose I could try displacing it with sand and then removing it again...?

Anyway...eggs have no purpose as of yet.

I'm just messing with a moat - it seems that if you take water from a still square, it refills, and if you pour enough onto a moving one it stops moving.

Maybe!

Are you more likely to find diamond and gold if you explore pre-existing caves rather than just making your own mining tunnels? After half an hour or so I only found 4 diamond ore and 0 gold ore. Lots of redstone and coal and a little iron, but I'm not particularly interested in those.

I've found that it's much easier to find ore inside preexisting caves, and diamonds within 10-12 blocks of lava(which Apt mentioned earlier, just to give credit where it's due). Mining in your own tunnels, while fun sometimes, gives you less surface area to look at. In caves you're able to see everything in the walls. Another tip is every time you find gravel - shovel it all out because it often hides other ores in the rocks behind it. I've found numerous diamond/iron/gold deposits behind gravel stores.

I'm completely OCD by now when it comes to gravel and dirt. If I see a pocket of it I have to remove it. Doesn't matter if there's lava between it and I or if it's way up in the ceiling. And if I don't find anything special after removing all of it I have to dig a bit into the walls around it. I usually bring 10-12 shovels and use them up way too fast. And since I can't get myself to throw building material away, I always have to run back out of the cave when ever my inventory fills up with stone, dirt and gravel.

Damn my hoarding tendencies.

Yeah, always take plenty of shovels because there's a lot of gravel underground and it hides a lot. It's quicker than mining through stone too.

Has anyone managed to create a successful fireplace yet? I'm trying to get one with actual fire rather than lava, but the fire I do create using my flint and steel only lasts for a little bit.

Are you using a log/chunk of wood? Or are you using the refined stuff/planks? Because it's only the logs that burn well. But you have to make sure to only light it on top or the fire can eat through it.
