Inverted dog years, surely.

Wait, are you calling us dogs?
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

It says ealry in HOC that karsa is entering his 18th year of life.

Does it? Because I specifically remember reading he was around 80 because that was the age that they were allowed to go out and be real warriors.

Yea its karsa basically narrating things in his head talking about it. Then later when they attack aother village he talks about the "youth" and says that he was shy of 80 years and that was the point when warriors were allowed typically to become warriors. So its weird to try and figure it out.

it says "newly arrived to my 18th year of life, a warrior in truth" Thats karsa thining to himself.

Im guessing possibly it was a typo never caught?? maybe it was supposed to be 80th instead of 18th.

Yeh he does say hes just turned 80 and also when looking at the older hunter later on that he kills he states that his face is wrinkled like that of a Teblor after centuries of life. So yeh 80 as a definite age. To throw more confusion on the matter Leoman in DG claims that Karsa is 17 for some bizarre reason.

There are other instances where kids grow up really fast, and usually its because of some kind of magical assistance (at least from the standpoint that there is no other explanation). Thats later book stuff though, so I wont go into details.

I think Leoman was just talking out of his ass.

Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.

When Leoman says Karsa's 'seen 17 summers' he might not be referring to years - maybe the weather on the Laederon Plateau is more like Westeros..

or more likely SE only came up with the idea of long-lived Toblakai after he'd written Deadhouse Gates.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Maybe Leoman gets a kick out of pretending Toblakai is just a really big human. He's making a joke that only he himself will laugh at.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Oh I know its a borderline GOTMism before he gets fleshed out later. A throwaway line but while we were on the subject of his age its the only other reference than he himself saying hes 80 which is the beginning of manhood for a Teblor or whatever.
